Vishnu Vardhana Rao, Member, Board of Management, TANUVAS participated in the celebrations. Dr. T.J. Harikrishnan, Registrar i/c, TANUVAS delivered the Republic Day speech. Best worker awards were presented to the Group C&D employees of the university in recognition of their performance during the occasion. The staff and students attended the celebrations in large number. The Republic Day was also celebrated in all the constituent colleges of the University. RECOGNITION OF SALEM BLACK GOAT BREED The ‘Salem Black’ goat breed of Tamil Nadu has been approved as a breed by Breed Registration Committee of ICAR and Breed Registration Certificate was issued with accession number “India_Goat_1800_Salem Black_06027” for the purpose of identification, phenotypic and genotypic evaluation, registration of the Salem Black goat breed in the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, Haryana. Hon’ble Union Minister of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Thiru. Radha Mohan Singh distributed the certificate in the ‘Breed Registration Certificate Distribution Ceremony’ held on 10.01.2018 at Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi and the same was received by Dr. N. REPUBLIC DAY CELEBRATIONS–2018

The sixty ninth Republic Day was celebrated at the TANUVAS Headquarters on 26.01.2018. Dr. N. Vishnu Vardhana Rao, Member, Board of Management, TANUVAS participated in the celebrations. Dr. T.J. Harikrishnan, Registrar i/c, TANUVAS delivered the Republic Day speech. Best worker awards were presented to the Group C&D employees of the university in recognition of their performance during the occasion. The staff and students attended the celebrations in large number. The Republic Day was also celebrated in all the constituent colleges of the University.

RECOGNITION OF SALEM BLACK GOAT BREED

The ‘Salem Black’ goat breed of Tamil Nadu has been approved as a breed by Breed Registration Committee of ICAR and Breed Registration Certificate was issued with accession number “India_Goat_1800_Salem Black_06027” for the purpose of identification, phenotypic and genotypic evaluation, registration of the Salem Black goat breed in the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources, Karnal, Haryana. Hon’ble Union Minister

of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare Thiru. Radha Mohan Singh distributed the certificate in the ‘Breed Registration Certificate Distribution Ceremony’ held on 10.01.2018 at Krishi Bhavan, New Delhi and the

same was received by Dr. N. Murali, Professor and Head, Department of Animal Genetics and breeding, VC&RI, Namakkal.

COLLEGE DAY, HOSTEL DAY, MUTHAMIZH VIZHA AND ANNUAL SPORTS DAY CELEBRATIONS

Madras Veterinary College: The College Day and Annual Sports Day of MVC were celebrated on 30.01.2018. Dr. B. Senthil Kumar, I.R.S., Principal Commissioner of Income Tax, Chennai participated as the Chief Guest, distributed the prizes for the winners of the sports and inter–class cultural competitions and delivered the special address. Dr.T.J. Harikrishnan, Director of Research, TANUVAS felicitated the gathering. Dr.K.Kumanan, Dean i/c, presented a report on the college activities. Dr.S. Selvan K. Santhakumar, final B.V.Sc & A.H. student proposed the vote of thanks. The Annual Sports Day was started with a march past by the students. Thiru. Rajagopalan Venkatesh, Coach, National Cricket Academy participated as the Chief Guest and distributed prizes to the winners of the individual events. Selvan Suresh of final year B.V.Sc.& A.H won Dr. I.D. Mantramurthi Rolling trophy for the individual men athletic championship and Selvan Praveen Kumar of final year was declared as the Sportsman of the year. In the women category, Selvi M. Pavithra of Final year won the rolling trophy for individual women athletic championship and Dr. C. Balachandran Rolling shield for Sportswoman of the year 2017.

The MVC Hostel Day and Muthamizh Vizha “Naavalam-17” was celebrated on 27.01.2018 at the Hostel premises. Dr. P. Saminathan, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Chennai South, the Chief Guest of the occasion released

“Andhimazhai 2017”, the magazine of Kalaimagal Kazhagam, distributed prizes and delivered the chief guest address. Dr. T.A. Kannan, Warden, MVC Hostel presented the Hostel Day Annual Report, 2017. Dr. K. Kumanan, Dean i/c, presided over the function and delivered the presidential address. Dr. S. Balasubramanian, Controller of Examinations

felicitated. Selvan R. Kavin, Kalaimagal Kazhagam Secretary briefed about the activities of Kalaimagal Kazhagam. Selvan D. Logeshkumar, final year student hostel representative, welcomed the gathering and Selvi. L. Mahalakshmi, final year student proposed the vote of thanks.

Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli: The College Day and Hostel Day of VC&RI, Tirunelveli were celebrated on 24.01.2018. Prof. Dr. K. Baskar, Vice–Chancellor, Manonmaniam

Sundaranar University, Tirunelveli participated, delivered the college day address and distributed prizes to the students who scored high academic proficiency and winners of the Tamil Mandram competitions. Dr. M. Thirunavukkarasu, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli presided over the function and delivered presidential address. Dr. M. Chellapandian, Vice-President, Students Association and Dr. S. Paramasivan, Warden presented the annual reports of the college and hostel, respectively. Selvan J. Maria Anto Dani Nishanth was awarded with Dr. V. Gnanaprakasam former Vice-Chancellor, TANUVAS award for the best outgoing student of 2012-13 batch for scoring highest OGPA and Selvi M. Lavanya of 2012-13 batch was presented with Bow and Bann Technology Solutions Pvt. Ltd. award for scoring highest OGPA in the disciplines of Veterinary Anatomy, Veterinary Physiology and Veterinary Bio-chemistry. Selvi R. Sugappriya, final year representative, welcomed the gathering and Selvan K.S. Sargunan, final year representative proposed the vote of thanks. The students performed various cultural events. All the faculty, staff and the students participated.

The Annual Sports Day was held on 23.01.2018. Dr. M. Thirunavukkarasu, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli, presided and inaugurated the programme. Dr. G. Sakthinathan, Dean, Anna University Regional

Balachandran, Dean (Rtd.), MVC, Chennai individual championship award for women. Dr. P. Ganeshkumar, Assistant Director of Physical Education and Dr. R. Selvam, Sports Secretary organized the events and function.

College of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduvalli: The College Day, Sports Day and Hostel Day of CFDT, Koduvalli was celebrated on 27.01.2018.

Dr. P. Venugopal, Hon’ble Member of Parliament, Thiruvallur constituency and Chairman, Standing Committee (Rural Development), New Delhi delivered the presidential address and distributed prizes to the winners of cultural programmes and sports events. Dr. D. Baskaran, Dean, CFDT, Koduvalli highlighted the achievements in teaching, research and extension and presented the College Annual Report. The staff and the students participated.

Anand, I.A.A.S., Principal Director of Audit, Southern Railways, Chennai participated as chief guest, delivered the College Day address and distributed prizes to the rank holders, best performing NSS & NCC volunteers and best room maintenance award. Dr. A.S. Rajendiran, Planning Board Member, TANUVAS felicitated. Dr. G.A. Balasubramaniam, Dean i/c, VC&RI, Namakkal presented the college annual report. Dr. G. Baskar, Head Coach, Indian Senior Men Basketball Team Sports Authority of India, Salem participated as chief guest, delivered the special address, inaugurated the sports meet and distributed prices to the winners of various sports events. Mr. N. Jayaprakash of second year and Selvi. M. Priya of fourth year received the overall championship in men and women track events respectively. Dr. P. Vasan, Sports Secretary welcomed the gathering and Dr. P. Mekala, Joint Sports Secretary presented

The Muthamil Vizha was celebrated on 01.02.2018. Dr. G.A. Balasubramaniam, Dean i/c, VC&RI, Namakkal, presided over the function. Thiru. P. Manikandan, Vijay TV celebrity, participated as special guest released the students’ magazine “Ilanthendral”, distributed prizes to the winners of various events and delivered felicitation address. Selvan P. Balaji and Selvi M. Kavitha won the Bharathidasan award and Avvaiyar award in the literary events respectively. Selvan S.Agathiyan, III year, Student Editor delivered the introductory speech about IIanthendral magazine. As part of the celebration, a Patti mandram was conducted. Dr. M. Selvaraju, Organiser, Tamil Mandram presented the Tamil mandram report. Selvan C.Mahesh Kumar, Student Secretary, Tamil Mandram welcomed the gathering and finally Selvi T.M. Kanimozhi, Student Secretary of Tamil Mandram proposed the vote of thanks.

PONGAL VIZHA

Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, Madhavaram: ILFC, Madhavaram celebrated Pongal Vizha on 18.01.2018. Dr. T.J. Harikrishnan, Registrar i/c, TANUVAS inaugurated the programme. Dr. V. Ramesh Saravana Kumar, Director, Centre for Animal Production Studies and Thiru. Shanmuga sundaram, Sub-Inspector, M2 Police Station, Madhavaram Milk Colony participated and distributed prizes to the winners of the various competitions held as a part of the celebration. A Veterinary Health Camp was conducted at Settimedu village of Thiruvalur district. Tmt. M. Kavitha Narayanan, Ex-councillor, Puzhal union, distributed prizes to the owners having best heifer calves, desi chicken and buffalo heifer calves. Dr. V. Ramesh Saravana Kumar, Director, CAPS and Dr. P. Tensingh Gnanaraj, Professor and Head, ILFC distributed green fodder, cattle mineral mixture, salt lick to the farmers. More than 250 animals and 100 desi birds were treated benefitting 70 farmers.

College of Food and Dairy Technology, Koduvalli: Pongal vizha was celebrated at CFDT, Koduvalli on 25.01.2018. Dr. D. Baskaran, Dean, CFDT, Koduvalli inaugurated the Mass Contact Programme in which a total of 528 animals were treated. Kolam and ethnic food preparation competitions for SHG members, uriyadi, a traditional sport for the staff and a debate on “Golden period of food – Whether ancient or recent?” for college students. An exclusive folk song, folk dance and villupattu competitions were conducted for the students located in Alamathi, Edapalayam and Bammathukulam villages. In the valedictory, Dr. K.P. Anand, I.A.A.S., Principal Director of Audit, Southern Railways, Chennai and Thiru. Gurumurthy, General Manager, Scientific Food Testing Laboratory, Aachi Masala Pvt. Ltd., Chennai participated and distributed prizes to the winners of the competitions.

Veterinary College and Research Institute, Tirunelveli: Pongal Festival was celebrated at the hostel premises on 11.01.2018 and at the farm premises of ILFC on 12.01.2018. Dr. M. Thirunavukkarasu, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli presided over the function. The staff and students participated in the celebration.

Farmers Training Centre, Kancheepuram: FTC, Kancheepuram along with Doordarshan Kendra, Chennai celebrated Pongal festival at Vishar, an adopted village of FTC on 06.01.2018. The farmers prepared pongal and participated in the various traditional events viz., kummi pattu,

uri adi, nattupura pattu, karakattam, oyilattam, kai silambattam, kavadi etc.

Veterinary University Training and Research Centre, Melmaruvathur: VUTRC, Melmaruvathur celebrated pongal vizha at Government High School, Thimmapuram by conducting various competitions on 23.01.2018. A total of 110 students participated in the event.

TRAINING ON ETHNO VETERINARY PRACTICES

A training programme on “Propagation of traditional herbal knowledge in veterinary practices” was conducted under State Innovation Fund (SIF) at VUTRC, Cuddalore on 10.01.2018. Dr. N.K. Sudeep Kumar, Director of Extension Education, TANUVAS inaugurated the programme. Dr. K.N. Selvakumar, Dean, VC&RI, Orathanadu released the training manual and felicitated. A total of 25 field veterinarians participated.

TRAINING FOR EXTENSION FUNCTIONARIES

VUTRC, Dindigul, in co-ordination with KVK, Gandhigram conducted, “Training for Extension Functionaries” to the Veterinary Assistant Surgeons of Dindigul district on 29.01.2018. Regional Joint Director along with Assistant Directors, Department of Animal Husbandry, Dindigul district graced the function in which Dr. R. Ezakial Napolean, Professor and Head, Department of Clinics, VC&RI, Namakkal delivered a guest lecture on “Clinical Approaches to treat obstetrics and gynaecological cases” in the training session. A total of 55 VASs from all over the district participated in the programme.

TRAINING FOR TRANSGENDERS

Swasti Health Catalyst, a non-profit society and Social Welfare Department, Government of Tamil Nadu jointly organized a training programme on “Goat production and management” from 18.01.2018 to 22.01.2018 for the benefit of 30 transgender farmers of Namakkal district. The faculties of Department of Livestock Production Management and Instructional Livestock Farm Complex, VC&RI, Namakkal delivered lectures

about production, reproduction, housing and health management of goats. The participants also visited the Instructional Livestock Farm Complex of this institution on 22.01.2018 to get hands on training.

FARM RADIO SCHOOL ON NATIVE CHICKEN FARMING

VUTRC, Karur conducted a Farm Radio School programme on ‘Native Chicken Farming’ in collaboration with All India Radio, Tiruchirappalli from 05.10.2017 to 28.12.2017 for 13 weeks. On conclusion, a one-day workshop cum contact class was conducted on 09.01.2018. Dr. N.K. Sudeep Kumar, Director of Extension Education, TANUVAS presided over the function and distributed certificates to the participants. Thiru K. Natarajan, Station Director and Thiru P. Chinnasamy, Programme Executive (Farm and Home), All India Radio, Tiruchirappalli participated and spoke. In addition to guest lectures, demonstrations, hands-on training were arranged. Farmers’ queries and doubts were addressed. A total of 33 farmers out of 60 registered farmers participated.

FARMERS SCIENTISTS INTERACTION MEET

FTC, Enathur, Kancheepuram in association with ATMA organized Farmers–Scientists-Interaction Meet at FTC campus on 23.01.2018 and 24.01.2018. The constraints faced by the farmers on agriculture and animal husbandry farming activities were extensively discussed and the experts offered practical solutions. Scientists from Animal Husbandry, Agriculture, Horticulture and Agricultural Marketing besides 27 farmers, participated.

PHARMACEUTICAL MEET

A Pharmaceutical Meet was organized at VC&RI, Namakkal on 05.01.2018. Dr. G.A. Balasubramaniam, Dean i/c, VC&RI, Namakkal inaugurated the programme and distributed the prizes to the students who have won the highest OGPA in the subject of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology and winners of PHARMA QUIZ competition-2017. Dr. P. Thejomoorthy, Professor (Rtd.), Department of Veterinary Pharmacology and Toxicology, MVC participated and felicitated. Executives from 12 pharmaceutical firms participated, displayed and explained about their products. The fourth and final year students visited the stalls, collected information and interacted with pharmaceutical representatives.

ANIMAL HEALTH CAMP

� FTC, Kancheepuram, Reliance Foundation and Department of Animal Husbandry, Thiruvallur district jointly organised Animal health camp and demonstration of treatment aspects for livestock diseases on 04.01.2018 and 05.01.2018 at Thiruper, Mettupalayam, Ramathandalam and Beemanthoppu villages of Thiruvallur District. Dr. Kanniappan, RJD(AH), Thiruvallur participated in the camp. A total of 1710 animals and 155 livestock owners were benefitted.

� VC&RI, Tirunelveli organized a “Livestock Health Camp” in collaboration with Seenivasan Services

Trust (TVS) group of companies on 30.01.2018 at Ambalam village, Nanguneri block of Tirunelveli district. Dr. M. Thirunavukkarasu, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli inaugurated the programme and delivered presidential address. More than 1200 sheep were vaccinated against Bluetongue disease in the camp. Infertility treatment, artificial insemination and deworming were done for more than 850 cows and buffaloes. Thiru.

E.Murugan, Field Director of Seenivasan Services Trust, Thirukurungudi and Industrialist Thiru. Raghunathan of Madurai made the arrangements for the livestock health camp.

AWARENESS CREATION CUM VACCINATION CAMPAIGN

� VUTRC, Karur organized an awareness creation cum vaccination campaign on Bluetongue and PPR

diseases in small ruminants at Elavanur village of Karur District on 09.01.2018 in collaboration with DCAHS, TANUVAS. Dr. K. Kumanan, Director, CAHS, TANUVAS inaugurated the vaccination camp and presided over the function. Dr. N.K. Sudeep Kumar, Director of Extension Education, TANUVAS delivered special address. Dr.S. Kathirvel, RJD(AH), Karur felicitated. Dr. Y. Krishnamohan Reddy, Principal Investigator, ICAR funded All India Network programme on Bluetongue & Professor and Head, Vaccine Research Centre - Viral Vaccines (VRCVV), DCAHS, TANUVAS provided technical support. Earlier, Dr. P. Vasanthakumar, Professor and Head, VUTRC, Karur welcomed the gathering. Dr. S. Duraisamy, AD, Karur proposed the vote of thanks. A total of 310 sheep and goats were vaccinated.

� VUTRC, Erode also organized a similar programme at A.Pudupalayam and Chennimalai, Erode district on 02.02.2018 in which a total

of 1500 and 1000 number of sheep were vaccinated against bluetongue and sheep pox, respectively. Besides these, 200 goats

were also vaccinated with PPR vaccine. Dr. K. Kumanan, Director, CAHS, TANUVAS, Dr. Y. Krishnamohan Reddy, Professor and Head, VRCVV, Dr. R. Selvaraj, Professor and Head, VUTRC, Erode, Dr. A. Maheswaran, RJD (AH), Erode, Dr. S. Gopala Samy, Assistant Director, ADIU, Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Assistant Director and Dr. S. Vijayakumar, VAS also participated. A total of 62 farmers participated.

AWARENESS PROGRAMME

An Awareness Programme on “Popularization of Target Selective Anthelmintic Technique among the Sheep Farmers in Tirunelveli District” was conducted at VC&RI, Tirunelveli on 10.01.2018 as a part of the NABARD funded project. Dr. M. Thirunavukkarasu, Dean, VC&RI, Tirunelveli presided over the function and distributed inputs to the beneficiaries of the scheme. Dr. M. Raman, Programme Head (Vaccines), TRPVB, TANUVAS handled the technical session. Tmt. F. Salima, District Development Manager, NABARD, Tirunelveli felicitated. Dr. A. Serma Saravana Pandian, Principal Investigator of the Project and Assistant Professor, Department of Animal Husbandry Economics, MVC presented the details of the project. A total of 40 sheep farmers belonging to Ambasamuthram division of Tirunelveli District participated in the awareness programme.

WORKSHOP ON WIKIPEDIA FOR ORNITHOLOGISTS

A workshop on 'Wikipedia for Ornithologists', organized by Madras Naturalists' Society was conducted at PGRIAS, Kattupakkam on 27.01.2018 and 28.01.2018. Dr. C. Sreekumar, Professor and Dr. R. Venkataramanan, Assistant Professor, PGRIAS co-ordinated the conduct of the programme. Dr. H. Gopi, Professor and Head, PGRIAS welcomed the gathering and introduced the activities of PGRIAS. A total of 15 participants comprised of students of engineering, library science, IT and management professionals underwent the programme.

PARTICIPATION IN INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE

CPPM, Koduvalli participated in the International Conference on “Food Processing and Agribusiness-Emerging Trends” organized by the Indian Institute of Plantation Management, Bengaluru in collaboration with University of Wisconsin, Madison, USA on 18.01.2018 and 19.01.2018. Under the iSTED platform- DST project of this college, “Fortification of chocolate with omega 3 fatty acid derived from plant source” has received the overall best poster presentation displayed by Er. S. Poorni, Field Officer of the iSTED funded project to the tune of Rs. 275.60 lakhs.

NSS ACTIVITIES

NATIONAL YOUTH DAY CELEBRATIONS

� VC&RI, Namakkal has organized National Youth Day celebration to mark the occasion of birth of Swami Vivekananda on 19.01.2018. Dr. G.A. Balasubramaniam, Dean i/c, VC&RI, Namakkal presided over the function and delivered the special address. About 200 students participated in various competitions like oration, essay writing and drawing organized during the occasion and the winners were distributed prizes. The NSS unit of the college made arrangements for the programme.

� National Youth day was also celebrated by the NSS unit of MVC through an exposure visit to Vivekanandar Illam, Chennai on 11.01.2018. A total of 38 NSS Volunteers participated in the programme.

� The NSS unit of VC&RI, Orathanadu organized an awareness function on Tobacco control programme under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act 2003 on 26.01.2018 in which a total of 56 students participated.

BLOOD DONATION CAMP

CPPM, Hosur organized a blood donation camp in collaboration with Government Hospital, Hosur on 10-01-2018. A total of 57 units of blood were donated by the NSS volunteers, students and faculties.
