A snake is a reptile with a long body and no legs. Snakes have dry scales that help them move. Snakes have a mouth that can open very wide.

A snake can see things that are close. Some snakes can see well at night. Snakes have no eyelids so they cannot close their eyes or blink.

Snakes do not have ears to help them hear. A snake can feel something moving with its body. A snake can smell with its tongue.

Most snakes will not hurt you. Snakes can be helpful by eating rats and insects around your house. Snakes also eat worms, frogs, mice, rabbits, fish, and eggs. Some snakes eat other snakes.

Sometimes a snake can hurt you. Some snakes have large hollow teeth called fangs. Poison that goes into the fangs will hurt you if you get a snake bite.

Some snakes lay eggs. Other snakes have their young born alive. Some snakes have only a few babies. Other snakes can haveup to 100 babies at

one time.

When a snake grows, its skin becomes too small. The snake skin splits and the snake will shed the old skin. New skin is under the old split skin.

Snakes can be many sizes. The smallest thread snakes are only a few inches long. The longest python and anaconda snakes can be 30 feet long.

eyelids – skin that can cover the eyes and protect them fang- hollow teeth that can hold poison harm – injury or damage or hurt poison – something that can hurt or even kill you reptile – a cold blooded animal with a backbone and usually scales or a hard cover scales – dry, thin flakes or coverings on the skin of some animals shed – to take off or remove split – break or burst or rip into pieces
