Reproduction
The process by which organisms produce offspring
Reproduction
The Big Question (aka GSE)
How are sexual and asexual reproduction the same and how are they different?
Types of Reproduction
Sexual: Two parents have offspring; offspring share traits from both parents.
Asexual: One parent has
offspring; offspring are genetically identical to parent.
Sexual Reproduction
Animals: Female parent produces an ovum, male parent produces a sperm. Both combine to produce an offspring, with genetic material from each parent.
Plants: Female part of the plant produces an ovum, male part of the plant produces pollen. Both combine to produce an offspring, with genetic material from each parent.
Asexual Reproduction
Binary Fission: The process by which the organism splits into two.
Most bacteria and protozoa reproduce by binary fission.
Asexual Reproduction
Budding: an offspring grows out of the body of the parent.
Hydra and sponges reproduce by budding.
Vegetative Propagation
The production of a new organism from a portion of another organism
Plants can reproduce by vegetative propagation
Regeneration
The re-growth of a lost or damaged part of an organism
Starfish can regenerate an arm Planaria can regenerate into two
organisms
Reproduction
What is it? The process by which organisms
produce offspring What was the Big Question again?
