representation of age and gender in my magazine

RepresentationGender & Age
By Chelsea Miller
Gender My magazine generally portrayed images of females. The images I used
represented the females as quite seductive, fashionable, confident and
strong which draw the target audience in. Adding to this, the models
used in the images portray a friendly and informal format to the
magazine. The cover artist is represented as quite seductive through the ‘sexy’ facial expressions which are shown; for example: through sucking a lollipop this could be an very flirtatious innuendo which presents sex appeal. This specifically draws the male audience in!
Women are
represented as
fashionable and
sexy in my
magazine. This is
because models
wear up-to-date
clothes which are
currently on-
trend. However,
through wearing
these clothes the
artists are
represented as
sexy due to the
lack of clothing
which is worn
which portrays sex
appeal.
Females in RnB magazines are stereotypically
presented as strong and confident. So the model
in my magazine are presented in a stance which
makes them see strong. Along with this, the facial
expressions which are shown also add to the
confidence.
On my double page spread my
article was about to rappers
having a battle. So I decided to
use an image to show this. This
violence is conventional to the
RnB/Hip-Hop genre and
represents females as quite
strong and independent.
Age
The cover artists in my magazine are represented as ‘teenagers’ through the use
of clothing/image and language.
The cover artists’ age is represented
through the clothing/costume in
which they wear. This is through
presenting the models as fashionable
due to them wearing on-trend
clothes which relates to them being
aged around 16-20.
In the double page spread, age
is identified through the use of
language. Stereotypically,
teenagers tend to use ‘slang’
and profanity types of
language. So, using phrases
such as ‘best bud’ and ‘love me
or hate me’ represents the
teenage age of the cover artists
which relate to the target
audience.
Also, on the front cover words such
as ‘gangster’ are used in the
coverlines. These types of words are
slang and therefore conventional to
the genre and target audience.
They also stereotypically represent
the age of 16-10 year olds who
frequently use this jargon.
