As a world class venue for the performing arts, the Shubert Theatre will be the center of a thriving regional cultural scene. Through its community outreach and collaborations, the Shubert will be a leader in making New Haven a national model for the importance of the arts in communities.

For more than 100 years, the Shubert Theatre has been the location for our community to come together and share the joy of the performing arts. We thank you for the support you have shown the Shubert over the years and especially during these extraordinary times. Your patronage and generosity have created a solid foundation for us to build upon as we plan for the future.

Although our season came to an abrupt and unexpected end as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, we continued to attract new audiences to New Haven and provided a positive economic impact to the City and the Greater New Haven region. We also continued our reputation as a preeminent house for touring Broadway productions by debuting new national tours for Jersey Boys and Dreamgirls. For both shows, the theatre was utilized to “tech” the show and rehearse the cast prior to the public performances. The magic of the Broadway season continued with audience favorite RENT, an all-new holiday presentation by The Illusionists and the memorable musical CATS, our last performance of the season.

We were delighted to add variety to our offerings with performances by acclaimed artists like Mandy Patinkin, The Four Italian Tenors and David Sedaris; a new live stage version of the popular Mystery Science Theater 3000; and shows to entertain our youngest audience members including The Very Hungry Caterpillar Show, and a musical version of the popular Pinkalicious book series.

As they say in the theater, the show must go on and in our case that meant ONLINE! We quickly pivoted from live and on-stage shows, to virtual performances for audiences to experience at home. Our signature fundraising event, Next Stop: New Haven led the way with our first-ever virtual fundraiser that quickly sold out. Our education department produced several online activities, story-times and tours for families to enjoy together.

Although our “intermission” is much longer than we anticipated, we will continue to offer virtual content to enjoy from home until it is safe for us to welcome you back to the Shubert. Be sure to check our website at shubert.com, look for announcements in our emails, and follow us on our social platforms for the latest updates.

On behalf of our board, staff and volunteers, we thank you for your continued confidence and support. We look forward to being together at the theatre when the curtain rises again on our legendary stage. Until then, please stay safe and healthy.

The Shubert continued to inspire creativity in young people during the 8th year of its Summer Theater & Arts Camp. The debut of the Shubert Sophomore program, funded by the DeLuca Foundation, made it possible to offer students $10 tickets to Broadway shows. At Co-Op High School, the Shubert trains students as Technical Theater and Teaching Assistants. CAPA Community Connections provides free tickets to New Haven-based family organizations. We also offer pre-show activities at the theatre, our popular Free Family Fun Day, workshops in schools, book readings at New Haven’s Stetson Library and participate at a variety of outreach events.

financialhighlights

CAPA’s operating revenues decreased 23% in Fiscal 2020 due to the COVID-19 mandated closures of all venues on March 13, 2020. Ticket sales were down 39% because of canceled and postponed events, including the hit Broadway musical Waitress.

Payroll & Related Expense and Artistic Programming comprise nearly 70% of operating expenditures for Fiscal 2020. In addition to the theatre’s administrative staff, the Shubert’s programming creates employment for a large number of local union stage workers, box office staff, ushers and other event-related part-time positions.

The revenue ratio was 84% earned and 16% contributed operating revenue in Fiscal 2020. Historically, CAPA has been the exception to the rule, operating on 80–90% earned revenue when the national average for non-profit arts organizations hovers at 60%. However, the shutdown has put an abrupt halt to CAPA’s earned revenue streams, making contributed income more critical than ever before. CAPA is fighting hard to survive these unprecedented times and donor support is more important now than ever.

the great give 2020During a 36-hour period in May, 2020, the following individuals donated specifically to the Shubert Theatre, one of 398 local nonprofits that benefited from this important annual day of giving. Even during the pandemic, we came together for a common good even while we’re apart—thank you.

In Memory of Cheever TylerMany of us will remember Cheever Tyler for the towering figure he was—not only in physical height, but in his unwavering dedication to the Shubert Theatre where he served as Chairman of the Board. He was well known for his exuberant personality, wide smile, recognizable laugh and contagious enthusiasm for, and support of, the arts. Shubert audiences could always count on him to be the first on his feet, applauding the cast with shouts of “Bravo!,” “Brava!” and for the really exceptional shows, “Terrific!” We thank the following individuals for their contribution in memory of Cheever.
