INTRODUCTIONA Content Management System (CMS) is defined as a software application used to create and control digital content. Nowadays, you can choose between a wide range of different CMS, selecting the one that best meets your criteria. WordPress and Joomla are two examples of Content Management System, characterized by various features. The capabilities, the price and the support differ from software to software.

The aim of this report is to compare two CMS, WordPress and Joomla, by analyzing their functionality, performance and their availability.

For each of the two software I discussed: Its functionality and stability Its performance Its support Its multicultural capabilities Its security

METHODOLOGYInformation for this study was collected by different articles found on the Internet, reading various comments from the users of both software, and by interviewing multiple people about WordPress and Joomla.

Users were asked the following questions: Have you ever used one or both Joomla and WordPress? How would you describe with one word the experience? Would you use it again? Why? How was its functionality? Were you satisfied with the outcome (performance)? If you have used both of them, which one would you prefer to use again?

FINDINGSHere below are the answers of the different users that I interviewed for this assignment.

USER 1

“Have you ever used one or both Joomla and WordPress?”U: “I have only used WordPress.”“How would you describe with one word the experience?”U: “User-friendly.”“Would you use it again?”U: “Yes indeed, as it is easy to use and everything is well explained. I didn’t encounter any problems when using it.”“How was its functionality?”U: “Simple, easy, with a tone of extensibility.”“Were you satisfied with the outcome?”U: “Yes! This is why if I need to create another website, I would use WordPress.”

USER 2

“Have you ever used one or both Joomla and WordPress?”U: “I have never heard of Joomla, but I am currently using WordPress to build my website.”“How would you describe with one word the experience so far?”U: “I would say professional. I wouldn’t say easy, since it took me a while to understand the software, but once I got to know it, working on it became simpler.” “Would you use it again?”U: “Let’s see how it will end, but for now I guess yes. Also because now I know how to use it, so next time it will be even more easy for me.”“How do you find its functionality?”U: “I find it limitless. You can do whatever you want, choosing the best option that suits your needs and wants.”“Are you satisfied with the outcome so far?”U: “Definitely yes! I am happy that I chose WordPress. Even though I had some issues at the beginning, they were worth it!”

USER 3

“Have you ever used one or both Joomla and WordPress?”U: “I only use WordPress if I need to build a website. I don’t really know Joomla.”“How would you describe with one word the experience?”U: “Flexible. They provide many options from where you can choose the one that you prefer. And also full of publishing tools that you can use to create your ideal website.”“Would you use it again?”U: “Yes of course! It is the only software that I use. It suits all my needs and I wouldn’t use another one.”

DISCUSSIONFrom the interviews and from the research activity that I have done on the Internet, I realized that Joomla is not as popular as WordPress. The usage of Joomla has decreased over the past years as it is shown in Figure 1, while WordPress became the leader of the market (Figure 2).

FUNCTIONALITY AND STABILITY

Functionality and stability are important factors of comparison between two CMS. Ease of use is considered one of the strengths of WordPress. It is called “the 5-minute install”, since the setup is quick and easy to install. Flexibility is another characteristic. You can create any type of website, from a blog to a business site. There is a wide range of content creation tools, to best satisfy the different users’ needs and wants. The process of creating new posts, pages and adding any type of media, can be defined as intuitive. For more complex layouts, this CMS provides page builders to enable beginners to build and modify the design of a page. Joomla works almost in the same way. However, compared to WordPress it is slightly more complicated, since it is more of an involved process that requires more time and effort. For what concerns the functionality, with both Joomla and WordPress you can extend your website by using plugins (for WordPress) or extensions (for Joomla), and themes (for WordPress) or templates (for Joomla) for the aesthetic of the site.As follows, I listed the major advantages of both software.

WORDPRESS JOOMLAEase of use More advanced user managementBetter suited for blogging More flexible for different content typeExtensibility Multilingual support (has a multilingual

support built in while WordPress needs to use a plugin)

Lower development costs Multiple templates

PERFORMANCE

Performance is also crucial for a comparison between two CMS. Page loading time is essential for visitors. You can have the most valuable content and the best design in your website but if it doesn’t load within a couple of seconds, some people will leave the page immediately and choose other sites. This happens especially when a visitor is using a mobile device, which has overtaken computers in usage (see figure 4). Performance is considered one of the weak spots of WordPress, one of the reasons is its popularity. On the other hand, Joomla has a good reputation concerning performance, due of a performance-boosting functionality built in it.

SUPPORT

One big advantage that a WordPress user has over a Joomla one, is that he/she becomes part of one of the largest online communities. This means that he/she will always receive support when needed. However, both of the software have a good support system, where the user can immediately receive technical help on any kind of problem.

MULTICULTURAL CAPABILITIES

Nowadays, there are companies which are slowly entering the international market. For this reason, these types of software need to be able to localize and translate the content of the website, depending on the country and language spoken. WordPress has improved this aspect by introducing a dozen of new languages. Localization and translation can be considered two of the different strengths of Joomla software. It has translation packs available for any type of language.

SECURITY

Owning a website can create many risks. This is why safety plays an important role in choosing the right CMS. In the past, WordPress had negative comments on its safety. Nevertheless, it has improved this factor and it is currently applying maintenance and security updates automatically. Doing so, the level of safety boosted up. Same happened to Joomla, which had to face several negative feedbacks. However, they changed the software by including different extensions and a security checklist to increase a website’s security.

After analyzing different information from the Internet and after hearing other people’s opinions, I can conclude that WordPress is the most used CMS. It is described as easy, user-friendly and flexible, which can be utilized for any type of website. Thanks to the word of mouth everyone has at least heard about it, and this is one of the reasons why it is nowadays the leader in the CMS market. On the other hand, Joomla is considered to be slightly more complicated than WordPress. It has different themes and extensions, which make the software work with a different process. A more elaborated one, that requires more time and effort. In conclusion, those two CMS are perfect for different types of content creation. Both of them provide a wide range of options and tools. Whether WordPress is better than Joomla, or the other way around, it depends on the user’s needs, wants and capabilities.
