I can’t tell you how pleased we are that you have this document in your hands.

Catholic Partnership Schools’ first community report reflects the value and

impact of your investment in the lives of our children and I believe, reflects the

effectiveness of our stewardship – two critical elements in the relationship

we’ve established with you. We hope you’ll enjoy reading it.

From day one, the strength and breadth of this partnership with our

benefactors has been the cornerstone of our progress and is the foundation

upon which we are building a future full of promise for the

more than 1,000 boys and girls we educate.

While you provide the resources to help strengthen and sustain us,

the educational and operational team the Board of Directors and I have put in

place is creating the structural framework for meaningful and lasting change

and scalable innovation. We are at a critical juncture in the evolution of

Catholic urban education and I know in my heart that all of us are prepared

to do whatever it takes to provide the children of Camden with the education −

and therefore, the future – they deserve.

visionOUR VISION:

Camden, New Jersey is a city of children. More than 40% of its population is under 18 and these children live in one of the most dangerous environments in the country. But it wasn’t always the case. While the factories, strong commerce, and thriving shipyard of a once vibrant city are now gone, nearly 80,000 people continue to call Camden home even as they face the harsh economic and social realities of life today. The one constant that remains, however, is that even as they struggle to overcome difficult odds, families in Camden still want the best for their children. They know that reversing the cycle of poverty and violence depends on reaching their children now with an education that builds a strong foundation for the future. And we continue to be here for them.

Catholic Partnership Schools became fully operational in the summer of 2010. This ambitious initiative – prompted by the imminent threat of additional school closures in a city that could ill afford them – is designed to retain Catholic education’s cultural and academic strengths and best practices.

How Does the Partnership Work?Five once-separate and parish-based elementary schools are now administered by a single non-profit entity that centralizes financial, academic, and operational management and oversight. Each of the schools – Holy Name, Sacred Heart, St. Anthony of Padua, St. Cecilia, and St. Joseph Pro-Cathedral – is a haven for their students where the emphasis is on strong academics and a safe learning environment. While the operational model is new, our schools are continuing the long tradition of preparing generations of Camden youth to more fully participate in the economic and civic life of the region and the nation.

Our mission is to continue to cultivate schools that not only provide a safe and nurturing environment within the means of all families, but also have the financial stability, outstanding educational resources, and strong business model that will sustain them for decades.

BECOME PART OF OUR STORY... Children deserve to learn in safe schools where the emphasis is on excellence and enrichment. They deserve to choose a Catholic Partnership School.

It costs the Partnership $6,500 per year to educate one child. The fee that families are asked to contribute is $1,800. But for more than 90% of our parents, a third or less is all they can pay. We make up the difference through a Diocesan subsidy, matching grants from the New York-based Children’s Scholarship Fund, and other generous donors. But it only covers a fraction of our real costs.

accomplishmentsWith new funding and the Partnership model’s ability to implement enhanced programming across the five schools, the academic and enrichment opportunities for our students have grown exponentially.

Academics• Introduced Children’s Literacy Initiative model classrooms and professional

development for teachers, in five schools for grades K-3.• In 2011, 30 students received $500,000 in scholarships over four years to attend

college-prep high schools in New Jersey and Philadelphia.

Evaluation/Measurement• Added on-line technologies and coaching to differentiate instruction and

enhance individualized attention and learning plans for every student. • Hired an instructional coach to work one-on-one with teachers in each of the

five schools.

Technology• The Partnership has a 3-year technology plan approved for e-Rate funding that

includes hardware acquisition and professional development for instructors on effective instruction integration. In addition, at each school, we now have:

• SmartBoards in every classroom• Up-to-date computer labs in every school with 7 workstations in every classroom

Family Engagement/Student Support• Hired a bi-lingual family support coordinator (grades K-5) to partner with

principals and teachers to help families better oversee and encourage their children’s success in school.

• Hired a bi-lingual family/graduate support coordinator to work with 6th to 8th grade students in learning life and study skills and navigating the critical middle grades transition and admission process for high school.

• Created a formal program for tutors and mentors for individual and small group student support.

Enrichment • Created a highly-regarded academically aligned afterschool program,

appropriately named SOAR, for students in grades 5-8. Invited to participate in a national pilot underwritten by C.S. Mott Foundation to study how high quality afterschool programs can better integrate with schools.

• Established an academically aligned summer enrichment program for students in grades 5-8. STEM education and civic engagement are the focus.

• Purchased a used school bus and van to transport students to special events and music and sport practices and activities.

• Consolidated individual school choirs and formed the Partnership Choir with community performances throughout the year.

• Established a Partnership-wide Instrumental Program bringing the opportunity to play an instrument to dozens of students for the first time.

Special Events• Hosted the first annual signature recognition event showcasing our children’s

art and performance, academic achievement and scholarship awards, and honoring our community partners. To date, The Dreams of Our Children events have been standing room only at Rutgers’ Gordon Theater.

• Campbell Soup Company hosted our first annual business breakfast to introduce the Partnership to the wider corporate community.

Facilities• Conducted a thorough facilities assessment of each school and created a

working plan for immediate and long-range needs. Began fundraising for capital improvements.

• Hired a mechanical technician to address specialized needs (electrical, plumbing, mechanical) for the Partnership schools.
