REPORT ON SOIL INVESTIGATION
OF TRAINING AND CONSTRUCTION OF WALBHAT RIVER FROM W.E.
HIGHWAY TO RAILWAY BRIDGE NO. 46, GOREGAON
(EAST),BRIMSROW PROJECT ( WS 43 )
FOR M/S. SKYWAY INFRA-PROJECT PRIME (J. V.)
INTRODUCTION:-
M/s. Skyway Infraproject Prime (J.V.) are proposing a
retaining wall for training of Walbhat river project at W-S 43, Training and
Consortium, Opp. Walpart River, from W. E. Highway to Railway Bridge No.
46, Goregaon (East), Mumbai. M/s. Structarch are the structural consultants_
The work of soil investigation work comprising of two trial boreholes
was awarded to M/s. Stefon Constructions. The data provided by these
boreholes is used to describe the subsoil condition prevailing down below.
The subsoil description is followed by discussion on foundation aspects and
recommendation
It may please be noted that the detailed structural design of foundation
is not contemplated in the report. The report is aimed at providing general
information regarding the Geotechnical aspects of subsoil formations from
safe bearing capacity and settlement point of view.

The top soil is consisting of filled up layer of 4.5 meter thickness.
SUB-SOIL PROFILE:-
Area Covered by borehole BH-1
Layer I (Start at 0.0 m end at 4.5 m depth)
The top soil is consisting of filled up layer of 4.5 meter thickness.
The filled up layer has got well compacted on which truck movement in fair
season is possible. In rainy season it may cause problem at few location due
to variation in density and moisture content.
Layer 11 (Start at 4.5 end at 5.5 m depth)
It is observed that there is layer of greyish rock fragments of 1.0 meter
thickness.
Layer III (Start at 7.5 m borehole end at 10.0 m depth)
The basaltic layer is observed from a depth of 5.5 meter meters depth
with 26 % to 84% recovery and 28% to 84% ROD value. The rocky layer is
noted up to a drilled depth.
Area Covered by borehole BH-2
Layer I (Start at 0.0 m end at 1.2 m depth)
The filled up layer has got well compacted on which truck movement in fair
It is observed that there is layer of greyish rock fragments of 3.8 meter
season is possible. In rainy season it may cause problem at few location due
to variation in density and moisture content.
Layer 11 (Start at 1.2 m end at 5.0 m depth)
thickness.
V. T. GANPULE & ASSOCIATES Continuation Shell 0.•..•........•.
Layer III (Start at 5.0 m end at 10.0 m depth)
The basaltic layer is observed from a depth of 5.0 meter meters depth
with 33 % to 75% recovery and 11% to 58% ROD value. The rocky layer is
noted up to a drilled depth.
LABORATORY TESTING:
Rock Core Test Results:
The crushing strength values show vide variation in unconfined
compression strength ranging between 154 kg/cm2 to 801 kg/cm2. The dry
density is in between 2.6 kg/cm2 to 2.9 kg/cm2. The water absorption and
porosity are also limited to the tune of 0.13 % to 0.79 % and 0.40 % to 2.08%
respectively.
Ground water test results:
The ground water is observed at a depth of 4.0 meters below ground
level. The pH (7.54) value indicates the water is slightly alkaline in nature. The
water contains 60 ppm of chloride as CI-. 24 ppm as sulphate as S03-
indicating that water is non aggressive in nature.
FOUNDATION ASPECT:
The proposed structure is a retaining wall of 6 meter retention height.
The expected loading intensity at base of retaining wall may be of medium
heavy range. To negotiate such loading intensity the greyish basaltic
formation is available from 6 meters depth below present ground level.
The foundation resting on greyish basaltic formation can be designed
with SBC of 80 T/m2 with a seat of' 60 cm into the weathered rock. The
expected settlement under loading intensity of 80 T/m2 will be in the range of

around 5 mm which are with in permissible limits.
5 mm which is well within the tolerance of the structure from serviceability
point of view.
The properties of retained earth is depends on quality of backfilled
material.
RECOMMENDATIONS:
1) The foundation resting on grayish basaltic formation may be
designed with SBC of 80 T/m2 at a depth of 6 meter below ground
level with seat of 60 cms.
2) The expected settlement under loading intensity of 80 T1m2 will be
The enclosed bore logs and laboratory test results complete the report.
