FDP 2018 IED JEC-MCE 1 REPORT ON ONE WEEK FACULTY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM ON RECENT ADVANCES IN PHOTONICS Under TEQIP, Phase III at Department of Instrumentation, Jorhat Engineering College A one week Faculty Development Program (FDP) on RECENT ADVANCES IN PHOTONICS was organized at the Department of Instrumentation Engineering , Jorhat Engineering College, Jorhat under the Twinning Program Initiative of Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan and Jorhat Engineering College under TEQIP, Phase III from December-03, 2018 to December - 08, 2018 with IEEE Photonics Society, India Chapter as the academic partner. The two participating Departments were the Department of Instrumentation, Jorhat Engineering College and Department of Electronics and Instrumentation, Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan.The main objective of this program is to make the participants aware of the recent developments in photonics and nanotechnology so that they can update their knowledge in this area and explore for further research. It was also expected that as the participants are all faculties of different educational institutions, the knowledge gained will be shared and further passed on to the students. The FDP was attended by 54 participants from faculty members of ECE, EE,ME,IE, Physics, Mathematics, Zoology, Chemistry department of different colleges. REGISTRATION & INAUGURATION SESSION: The registration started at 9.00 am and the participants were provided with the FDP kit. Ms. Nabasmita Phukan, on behalf of the Co-ordinators of the event hosted the inauguration programme starting off with a brief introduction of the programme and highlighting TEQIP for sponsoring such type of programme. Prof. (Dr.) Neelanjana Baruah, HOD of IED welcomed all the respected dignitaries and participants and explained the importance of photonics in engineering and basic sciences. Dr. Reeta Sarmah, Principal of JEC appreciated the program organized by IE dept in her speech. Prof H. S. Mohana, Professor, E&IE dept, MCE emphasized the benefits of such kind of resourceful activity and also encouraged this kind of twinning activity. TECHNICAL SESSION: DAY 01: December-03,2018: Session I The keynote address was delivered by Dr. T. Srinivas, Associate Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, IISC, Bangalore. In his talk he spoke on the Optical Integrated Circuits and the participants learnt about the working and use of these optical circuits. He also dealt on the concept of MOEMs ( Micro- opto Electro Mechanical Systems) in his talk.

DAY 01: December-03,2018: Session II The next technical session was also conducted by Dr. T. Srinivas. In this session he went into the depth of the concepts and explained Optical Integrated Circuits. DAY 01: December-03,2018: Session III Dr. Dibakar Roy Chowdhury, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, Mahindra Ecole Centrale, Hyderabad conducted an interactive session in which he delivered a talk on Tetrahertz Metamaterial. In this session, the participants learnt about different Terahetz metamaterials and and its applications.

DAY 02: December-04,2018: Session I Dr. Dibakar Roy Chowdhury also conducted the first session of the second day. In this session he went into the details of the applications Terahertz metamaterial. The participants interacted with him and they were enthusiastic about the knowledge they had received. DAY 02: December-04,2018: Session II Dr. T. Srinivas continued for the 2nd day with his last session where he went into the finer details of the subject which ended with mathematical derivation. The participants learnt about electromagnetic field theory and IO waveguide in this session.

DAY 02: December-04,2018: Session III Dr. Gagan Kumar, Associate Professor, Dept of Physics, IITG conducted the next session of the day. He delivered his lecture on Tera hertz plasmonics over two sessions. In this session he went from the basics of terahertz plasmonics. The participants learnt what is terahetz plasmonics and its various application in this session DAY 02: December-04,2018: Session IV Dr. D.N. Nagalaxmi delivered her second session on the fourth day on Nanomedicine: nano technology in medicine. The participants understood the concept of application of nanotechnology in healthcare sector through her talk.

DAY 03: December-05,2018: Session I Dr. P.C. Srikanth, Secretary IEEE Photonics Society, India Chapter and also Professor, Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering, Malnad College of Engineering, Hassan started his first session with Survivability issues in optical Networks. The participants learnt how to make an optical network reliable in this session.

DAY 03: December-05,2018: Session II Dr. Gagan Kumar, in this session explained the research works carried out in the field of Terahertz plasmonics. The participants learnt about the different research work carried out in this field and the different areas yet to be explored in their domain using this technology.

DAY 03: December-05,2018: Session III Dr. A. Majumdar, retired Professor, University of Colarado, USA conducted the next session where he delivered his talk on Free Space Optical Communication. This talk provided a food for thought on the application of LIFI and its advantages and limitations for the participants.

DAY 03: December-05,2018: Session IV Dr. Vipul Rastogi, Associate Professor, Department of Physics, IITR delivered an interactive lecture session on Optical Fibre. The participants learnt in detail what Optical fibre really is.

DAY 04: December-06,2018: Session I The day started with Dr. Vipul Rastogi’s sequel to his first session the previous day where he talked on Optical Fibre based components and devices. In this session the participants learnt the application of optical fibre in different devices and also the components needed in such cases DAY 04: December-06,2018: Session II Dr. D.N. Nagalaxmi, HoD , Blood Bank, Hassan Institute of Medical Science delivered an interactive session on Nano biosensors. The participants learnt the application of nano biosensor in medical field in this session.

DAY 04: December-06,2018: Session III Dr. Dinesh Kumar V, Associate Professor & HOD, IIITDM, Jabalpur delivered his talk on Hybrid Plasmonic Based Components for Optical Communication. The participants got an insight on the state of research going on in this field.

DAY 04: December-06,2018: Session IV Dr. Gopal Hedge, Professor, Dept of Nanotechnology, IISC , Bangalore delivered his first lecture on Optical MEMs. The participants learnt about MOEMs in this session.

DAY 05: December-07,2018: Session I Dr. Dinesh Kumar V conducted his second session in the morning of the fifth day. He continued his lecture on Hybrid Plasmonic Based Components for Optical Communication. He went into finer details on the concepts used by his research group in this session. The participants learnt how to use the concepts of photonics in research. DAY 05: December-07,2018: Session II The second session was conducted by Dr. Gopal Hedge. He delivered an interactive lecture on nanophotonics. The participants learnt about the applications of photonics in nanoscale , about sensors and its fabrication in his talk.

DAY 05: December-07,2018: Session III Dr. P.C. Srikanth, delivered his talk on Quantum Cellular Automata, Medical application of LASERS and PABG. The participants learnt about the applications of photonics by this talk.

DAY 05: December-07,2018: Session IV Dr. Bosonta R Baruah, Professor, Department of Physics, IITG delivered an interactive lecture on vortex beam. The participants learnt about the generation of vortex team.

DAY 06: December-08,2018: Session I The first session of the last day started with Dr. Bosonta R Baruah’s interesting talk on Optical Tweezer. The participants learnt about optical trapping. Moreover, they were motivated by the fact that such experiments on novel wining concepts are carried out in IITG.

DAY 06: December-08,2018: Session II Dr. P.P. Sahu, Professor & HOD, ended the technical session of the FDP with his lecture on Optoelectronics and Optical Network. The participants learnt about optical network and also how entire mainland India can be connected using optical network.

VALEDICTORY SESSION: The valedictory session started after lunch. The honourary personalities present Prof. Gopal Hedge, IISC Bangalore, Prof P.P. Sahu, Tezpur University and Prof. P.C. Srikanth, Secretary IEEE, Photonics Society. All the members of the organizing team were also present at the event. It started with brief summing up of the entire event by Ms. Nabasmita Phukan. The HoD of the Department of Instrumentation Engg, Prof. Neelanjana Baruah, and Prof P.C. Srikanth

appreciated the effort of the organizing team in managing the FDP so well. The participants also appreciated the topics and speakers of the program.The vote of thanks was given by Mrs. Monisha Pathak. The session ended with the distribution of participation certificate and high tea.
