IV. Overview of Programmes Conducted by the IMH (January to June 2015)

Public Education

(1) Stress Management Workshop

The Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) invited the PES to organise a

two-hour training workshop for their newly recruited/promoted Commission Against

Corruption Officers on 13 March 2015, with the aim of enhancing participants’ awareness

and understanding of factors affecting personal wellness and work performance as well as

providing techniques in managing one’s own stress.

(2) Management of Workplace Violence (MoV) Seminar cum Workshops

In response to the invitations from the TWGHs Tsui Tsin Tong School (Boarding Section)

(the School) and the Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK), two seminars and four

workshops on MoV were conducted in January and March 2015 for social workers and

nurses of the School (30 January) and nursing students of the OUHK (13 and 20 March)

respectively. It aimed at enhancing participants’ knowledge on MoV, allowing participants to

learn and practise breakaway techniques and enabling nursing students to familiarise with

the guidelines and principles of MoV in the clinical setting of psychiatric hospital. About

120 participants attended the captioned seminars and workshops.

(3) Educational talks

In response to the invitations from the Immigration Wellness Service Centre and The Boys’

and Girls’ Club Association of Hong Kong, two educational talks were held on

understanding severe mental disorders for staff of the Immigration Department and the

public on 29 April 2015 and 11 June 2015 respectively.

(4) Educational Materials

The publications of the IMH provide a good source of information on mental illnesses and

self-help guide to the general public. The information is handy and easily accessible at the

service units of CPH and online at the IMH website. To ensure the information is accurate

and up-to-date, the PES has continuously been reviewing all educational materials and

reprint those pamphlets with high demand. The materials updated from January to June 2015

were listed as follows:

The above materials are available for free distribution in different service units and

accessible on the IMH website.

(5) Health Column on Sing Tao Daily

The PES continues to collaborate with Sing Tao Daily in publishing articles written by CPH

colleagues as an effective medium to disseminate mental health knowledge to the public.

The articles are published under the health column “保健至專” inside the feature page of the

newspaper.

CPH colleagues have contributed to this project by actively submitting their articles.

Published articles are shared with all CPH staff via email. The collection of articles has also

been uploaded to the IMH website for public access.

Professional Training

(1) Nourishing Ourselves with Mindfulness One-Day Workshop

A one-day experiential workshop on “Nourishing Ourselves with Mindfulness” by Dr. Helen

MA was successfully held on 6 March 2015. A total of 106 health care professionals including

doctors, nurses, clinical psychologists, occupational therapists and social workers attended the

training.

Psychiatric Nursing Education

(1) Graduation Ceremony of Enrolled Nurses

The Graduation Ceremony for Class 11 of the Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training

Programme for the Hospital Authority was held on 3 February 2015. A total of 29 pupil

nurses graduated.

 

 

(2) Two-year Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training Programme

Under the two-year Enrolled Nurse (Psychiatric) Training Programme, there were two classes

(Classes 12 to 13), with a total of 58 trainees, undergoing training in CPH during the

reporting period.

Research

(1) Research Skills Training Workshop

The Research Subcommittee has been organising Research Skills Training Workshops which

comprise a series of interactive small-group workshops conducted by experienced researchers.

The series of workshops repeats once every year, and is open to all CPH staff. We also invited

Family Medicine trainees of Tuen Mun Hospital (TMH) to attend. The workshops aim at

promoting a culture of research and enhancing research skills among our staff. The first two

workshops of the series were held in May 2015. A total of 10 CPH and TMH staff participated

in these workshops.

(i) Critical Appraisal of Research Papers (13 May 2015)

This workshop was conducted by Dr. William CHUI which was about critical appraisal of

research papers.

(ii) Defining Research Questions and Preparing Research Protocols (20 May 2015)

Conducted by Dr. Simon LUI, this workshop was on research methodology and the concept

of research paradigm and common pitfalls in research design.

(2) Research Seminar

Research Seminars are part of the regular in-house training programme for medical staff. A

total of five candidates, who were taking the FHKCPsych Part III Fellowship Examination,

presented two research seminars on 25 February and 25 March 2015 respectively. A total of

78 medical staff attended.

(3) Research Studies

As of June 2015, CPH has more than 30 on-going research projects. IMH is actively involved

in the following research projects:

“A four-year prospective family study in patients suffering from first episode

psychosis: A quest for intermediate phenotypes and aetiology of psychosis” – Data

collection stage. As of June 2015, a total of 206 patients with first-episode psychosis and

99 healthy controls have been phenotyped and endophenotyped and 337 patients have

been recruited for genotyping. An article entitled “The nature of anhedonia and avolition

in patients with first-episode schizophrenia” has been submitted to Psychological

Medicine and is under review. Another two articles entitled “Affective experience and

motivated behaviour in schizophrenia spectrum disorder: Evidence from clinical and

non-clinical samples” and “Time-based but not event-based prospective memory remains

impaired one year after the onset of schizophrenia: A prospective study” are under review

by Schizophrenia Research.

“Neurological soft signs in chronic patients with psychosis and its susceptibility

genes: An extended study” – Completed. Two articles have recently been published in

Scientific Reports.

“Theory of mind performance in patient with first-episode schizophrenia and

first-degree relatives: A cross-sectional case control study” – An article was published

in Schizophrenia Research.

“Schizotypy traits or features in nonpsychotic first-degree relatives of patients with

schizophrenia: Cluster analysis using the Chapman Psychosis Proneness Scales” –

Write up stage.

“Searching for intermediate phenotypes for psychosis: a functional MRI study on

neuroanatomical markers for psychosis and gene-brain mapping” – Donation fund

and approval from the Institutional Review Board has been obtained. This study is at the

data collection stage. As of June 2015, a total of 50 patients with first-episode psychosis,

12 first-degree relatives and 45 healthy controls have been recruited for neurological tests.

MRI brain scans had been conducted for 62 of them.

Patient and Carer Resource

(1) Mini-art Gallery

The artwork framing group “ 書 畫 樂 聚 之 裱 畫 小 組 ” continued to organise patient

empowerment activities. Two gatherings were conducted on 2 January and 29 April 2015,

with six and nine participants respectively, preparing for the exhibits of the Mini-art Gallery

at the Tuen Mun Mental Health Centre.

(2) Community Partnership and Teen’s Life Coach Events

A community partnership and teens life coach programme was jointly organised with the

Jardine Matheson Group (Jardine). The programme included the following activities during

the reporting period:

“City Orienteering (城市追踪)”was conducted on 24 January 2015, with 19 patients

participating. The activity aimed at providing an environment for participants to practise

skills in planning, time management, budgeting and decision making, which offered an

opportunity for patients to interact with secondary school students. Patients, students and

Jardine Ambassadors worked together to achieve assigned tasks in Sha Tin, Tai Po,

Fanling and Sheung Shui.

A Chinese couplet writing and barbecue “Teen 使 行 動 之 揮 春 製 作 及 燒 烤 ”

co-orgainsed with the San Wui Commercial Society Secondary School was conducted on

7 February 2015, with 14 patients and student volunteers participating. It provided a

platform for secondary school students to interact with psychiatric patients and to

establish a positive attitude towards mental illness.

A singing contest and barbecue was conducted on 21 March 2015, with 14 patients

participating.

(3) Two educational talks entitled “肯定自我如何說不” and “如何處理憤怒” were held for

members of the Happy Sharing Group (樂協社) on 20 January and 24 February 2015

respectively. A total of 89 patients attended.

Hospital Archives & Gallery Exhibition

(1) Photo-stories of CPH 青山相一賞

The HAGES has organised an exhibition outside the CPH staff canteen entitled “青山相一賞”

with images depicting historical moments with a brief introduction every three months.

“Comparison of old and new padded room” and “Old pink mortuary” were featured in the

episodes of February and May 2015 respectively.

(2) Seminar and Workshop on Introduction to Music Therapy and Mental

Health: Use of Music in Local Clinical Practice

The seminar and workshop on “Introduction to Music Therapy and Mental Health: Use of

Music in Local Clinical Practice” was successfully held on 25 March 2015. The guest speaker,

Mr. Edmund MA, gave a brief introduction of music therapy and its development in mental

health services in Hong Kong in the seminar; while in the workshop, demonstration and

experience of the unique features of music as a therapeutic tool was arranged. A total of 70

and 26 staff of the NTWC attended the seminar and the workshop respectively. Participants

found the seminar and the workshop very interactive and enjoyable.

(3) “Happy@CityU” Art Exhibition

The “Happy@CityU” exhibition was held from 9 to 14 February 2015 at The City University

of Hong Kong (CityU). The theme was to promote positive attitude in the campus. Ten photos

and three posters from the previous “Art-in-CPH Salon Photograph Exhibition” and five

patients’ artworks were displayed at the exhibition.

(4) Art Exhibition at HA Convention

Nine artworks of patients were displayed in the HA Convention 2015 on 18 and 19 May.

(5) MTR Community Art Galleries Exhibition

An exhibition of patients’ artworks was held at the concourse of Tuen Mun Station of the

West Rail Line in June 2015. This project aimed at reducing stigma towards mental illness by

illustrating the artistic talents of psychiatric patients to the public and thus, to enhance public

awareness, concern and support for people with mental illness.

V. Statistics of Educational Activities (Organised by the IMH and Invitations

Received)

The summary of all educational activities conducted by the IMH from January to June 2015 is

presented in Appendix I. The activities were categorised into two types. The first type refers to

activities that were initiated and organised by the IMH and the other includes invitations from

other organisations for conducting talks or training courses.

A total of 32 activities were conducted, among which 21 were organised by the IMH. A

total projected net income of $176,735 was earned from the activities with 998 overall

attendances. The breakdown of the activities by topics, target groups and geographical

locations of the participants can be found in Appendix I.

Activities Organised by the IMH

A substantial proportion of the activities organised by the IMH during the reporting period

focused on topics related to general adult psychiatry, which accounted for 76% of the

activities held. The activities organised by the IMH mainly targeted at professional carers and

patients. A projected net income of $121,976 was generated from the activities.

Invitations from Other Organisations Among the 11 invitations that were received from external organisations, including

government departments, non-government organisations (NGO) and educational institutions,

most requested for delivering training courses targeted at professional carers and the public.

The projected net income was $54,759.

Loan Record of Mental Health Educational Products One application from NGO / educational institution for borrowing our educational exhibition

boards / obtaining pamphlets or quoting / copying our publications, and linking up the IMH

website was received and approved.
