The Leaders’ Circle giving society recognizes the commitment and contributions of donors who support Vermont Law School at a leadership level, year after year. To become a Leaders’ Circle member, donors make a five-year forward pledge of $1,000, $2,500, or $5,000 per year, and/or have demonstrated a five-year, consistent giving history at that level.

The President’s Society honors Vermont Law School’s most generous supporters, those distinguished alumni and friends whose lifetime contributions have reached $25,000 or more.

Vermont Law School welcomed the following donors to the Douglas Meredith Legacy Society for including VLS in their estate plan through a will or living trust, creating a charitable remainder trust (naming VLS as the remainder beneficiary), entering into a charitable gift annuity agreement with VLS or naming VLS as the beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan.

THE CHRISTOPHER BRAXTON WREN ENDOWED

SCHOLARSHIP FUND WAS ESTABLISHED BY CHRIS’S

FRIENDS AND FAMILY IN FEBRUARY, 2015, following

his untimely death from a fatal brain aneurysm at the

age of forty-four.

As a child, Chris traveled the world with his father,

a New York Times foreign correspondent. He joined the

Student Conservation Association as a teenager, fos-

tering his dedication to environmental preservation.

After graduating from high school in Illinois, he worked

for the National Park Service in a number of roles: law

enforcement ranger, emergency medical technician, and

firefighter in Washington state and California.

During a break from his college studies, he lived in

Johannesburg, accompanying his father into political

hotspots in South Africa, Namibia, and Angola; some of

his news photos appeared in The New York Times.

Attracted by its reputation as the nation’s top

environmental law school, Chris enrolled at Vermont

Law School in 1996. He was the president of the Trial

Advocacy Moot Court Board and captain of the school’s

National Trial Competition team. The Organization

for Security and Cooperation in Europe selected him

to monitor elections in Bosnia where he uncovered a

pattern of fraudulent voting.

The Christopher Braxton Wren Endowed Scholarship

will be directed to students who demonstrate an interest

and passion for international law with a focus on the

protection and enforcement of human rights. Priority

will be given to a student who is (or will be) engaged

in a full-time externship, preferably in a foreign coun-

try, where their work focuses on the protection and/or

enforcement of human rights.

FORMER VERMONT LAW SCHOOL DEAN JEFF SHIELDS

AND WIFE GENIE SHIELDS DONATED THEIR TUN-

BRIDGE HOME TO VERMONT LAW SCHOOL IN 2014.

The funds from any future sale of the 3,400-square-foot

historic home (built in 1810) will be considered an unre-

stricted gift to VLS.

Dean Shields passed away peacefully on August 2,

2014.

Consummate hosts, Jeff and Genie used their

Tunbridge home to nurture the VLS community. VLS

Deputy Vice Dean Mark Latham, also a former colleague

of Jeff’s from Chicago, estimates that the number of

gatherings at the Shields’ home exceeded several hun-

dred, ranging from breakfast, lunch outside on the stone

patio or tree-shaded lawn, and dinner beneath a candle-

light chandelier. The Shields hosted Zydeco Mardis Gras

parties and contra dances in their barn, celebrating the

spirit of Vermont Law School.

In announcing the Shields gift to the Vermont Law

School community, President Dean Marc Mihaly noted,

“Jeff and Genie have given to this school in so many re-

markable ways over the years, particularly through their

extraordinary and dedicated service to students, facul-

ty, staff, and alumni during Jeff’s tenure as president

and dean. They have always led by example. This most

generous gift is a clear manifestation of their philan-

thropic spirit.”

Asked why she and Jeff made the decision to donate

their home to Vermont Law School, Genie said, “Jeff felt

deeply that the dean should be available to students,

faculty, and staff as well as the larger community and

we used our home to make that possible. We both loved

sharing it with the VLS family. I cherish my memories of

our lives in our cozy home just past the covered bridge,

with its chickens, cats, rabbits, rescue donkey, and Ice-

landic horse and the nonstop flow of guests.”

JOURNEY TOWARDS COMMENCEMENT WITH

A SPECIAL TRIBUTE TO PROFESSOR HANNA.

To honor and memorialize the legacy of their

beloved professor who passed away unexpect-

edly in July 2014, the class raised $21,979 to-

wards the naming of 007 Classroom after Pro-

fessor Hanna. VLS will install the plaque on the

classroom wall by the end of the year.

As described by many in and beyond the Ver-

mont Law School community, Professor Hanna

was a true teacher and role model—especial-

ly to Vermont Law School students. She was

a caring friend, thoughtful adviser, and warm

listener. An expert on constitutional law, the

U.S. Supreme Court, and women and the law,

Professor Hanna’s scholarship has been pub-

lished by the nation’s leading law journals, and

cited by the U.S. Supreme Court and numerous

national news publications. For generations of

law students to come, the Cheryl Hanna Class-

room will pay tribute to her memory, and be a

reminder of the best qualities of a VLS profes-

sor. As one member of the Class of 2015 notes,

“From her, I learned that from now on, my life

has an impact beyond what I do in my office.

My career has the ability to influence others all

over the state, both within the legal profession

and outside of it as well.”
