I am happy to admit that it wassomething of a surprise whenJose Marrero had to resign asPAIMA president last year. Asvice president I always knewthat it would be for me to stepup should the need arise - but Inever expected it to be thissoon.

That said, it’s a great honor to be yourpresident and I realize that the task aheadof me is an important one. PAIMA is anexcellent organization and I pay tribute toJose and his predecessors for their hardwork and professionalism that has led usthis far. PAIMA is undoubtedly a familyand I have always been proud to be amember of it. But it seems to me that wehave some new challenges in our industry, largely relating to the speed of change intechnology and the effect that this ishaving on our day-to-day work. There isno doubt that we will need to address theobstacles and opportunities that presentthemselves and I hope to be able to playmy part in steering our family through anychoppy waters we might encounter alongthe way.

As I write I am preparing to chair my firstPAIMA Board meeting as president. Iconfess that I am a little nervous. But Iam confident in my Board and know thatwe have a strong forum in which we canall air our views about the direction ofPAIMA and act together for the benefit ofthe whole organization.

More importantly, I recognize that we havea great group of members and thatmembership is growing every year fromall over the world. It is testimony to thequality of our organization that so manyfirst-class companies are interested inbecoming part of PAIMA. We welcomethem and rejoice that their presence andexpertise makes the organization everstronger.

As we enter the high season in many partsof the world I wish you all good fortuneand look forward to when we all meetagain later in the year.

Lars LemchePAIMA President

he first issue of PAIMA Report in 2018and my sincere thanks to all those ofyou who sent in stories for

publication. It looks as if my appeal inLong Beach last year had some effect aswe have seen an unmistakable increase inthe number of contributions received.

As I said then, the more you send me, the better Ican make the magazine and the more enjoyable itwill be for everyone. That said, it’s also true thatmost PAIMA members never contribute anything toPAIMA Report which is a shame as I am sure thereare lots of great stories out there. Please remember, there’s no need to worry about perfect English, orwriting in English at all if you prefer not to. Justsend me your stories in your own language, withsome really nice photos, and I’ll do the rest.

Once again, we have some introductory storiesfrom new PAIMA members in this issue. Thereshould be more, however it seems that somecompanies are reluctant to share their informationwith the rest of the group as, despite our bestefforts, they are keeping quiet. If your company isa new member of PAIMA, but you have yet to befeatured in the magazine, please get in touch so wecan work up a story that will introduce you toeveryone else. Don’t forget, the next issue isimmediately before the annual conference so is aperfect time to say hello and make sure everyonerecognizes you in the bar in Washington DC.

My best wishes for a busy and profitable 2018season.

rucking companies in Germanyhave raised their prices bybetween 8% and 12% in 2018,

bringing to an end the fixed truckingcost that have prevailed in recentyears.

A very strong German economy has createdhuge quantities of goods which have to betransported through the country. Bad weatherduring the whole of 2017 and the start of2018 brought down power cables andcaused trees to be uprooted making many raillinks inoperable and increasing the demandfor road transport.

A severe truck driver shortage has also addedto the problem. In the past when Germany

had mandatory military service, many youngmen were able to obtain their truck driverslicense free during their time in the forces andlater made their living driving trucks in civilianlife. Those days are now gone and obtaininga truck driver‘s license is very expensive foryoung men wishing to enter the profession.

This has resulted in a major truck drivershortage for removal companies in Germany, especially in the container trucking sector.Companies often have trucks and trailers butno one to drive them and the problem is set toget worse during the next few years.

Trucking companies in Germany aresometimes booked for more than a weekahead - especially during the peak holidayseasons and even in normal times at least 3–4business days’ notice is required forshipments. This has been the case since April2017 and there is no sign of thingsimproving. Rail transport is even worse withbookings often required up to two weeks inadvance.

led by Mr Chaivudhi Punthong, themanaging director, along with 35staff, organized a corporate socialresponsibility trip to Phathum Thani,a rural area outside Bangkok. Thegroup has kicked off its 1stcorporate social responsibility eventby hosting a full lunch and donatingdry food, kitchenware, householditems, cleaning materials and clothesfor the use of the 480 women livingin the Thanyaburi Housing &Homeless Shelter.

The Thanyaburi Housing & Homeless Shelterwas started by the Thanyaburi Office ofSocial Welfare Services Ministry of SocialDevelopment under the Beggars Control Actof 1941, which had both male and femalerecipients. Because of the increased number

"Our management has highlighted the needfor our group of companies to focus oncreating meaningful long-term impacts forcorporate social purpose,” said Tiddy STeerawit, Executive Director. “Themanagement always encourages our staff tounderstand the links between businessoperations and society, and the key role theyshould play in creating a world that is livableand sustainable for future generations.”

arl Hartmann had its bi-annual party in Februarywith around 100 guests joining members of stafffor Kohltour, a traditional winter event in and

around the Bremen area.

Kohltour is an outdoor experience involving a 2-3-hour walk in thecountryside around Bremen in the bracing chill of winter, fortifiedby sufficient alcohol – beer and liquor – to keep the spirits high.Carl Hartmann made sure the supplies were unlikely to run dry bydragging the liquid sustenance with them in a green cart (seepictures).

The exercise was concluded with a traditional dinner includinggreen cabbage, potatoes and a range of meats followed by aband and disco to allow their dancing feet to get into full swing.Eyewitness reports say that many of the revelers were ‘ready forbed’ having started their liquid refreshments around noon (purelyto aid digestion of course) and not finally quenching their thirstsuntil ... late.

he PAIMA Board met at thehead office in Miami. Aswell as brushing up their

golf, the Board had a veryproductive meeting putting thefinal touches to the program forthe conference in WashingtonDC in October.

One highlight of the conference willundoubtedly be the PAIMANetworking/Karaoke/Sightseeing touron the Potomac river aboard the luxuryyacht National Elite. You’ll need allyour faculties in order for theafternoon: networking brain, businesscard quick draw technique, sea legsand vocal chords tuned to perfection. For the PAIMA people, that’s just anaverage day at the office. It’s going tobe great fun.

The Board also finalized the plans forthe PAIMA 5th Annual Golf Tournamentwhich will be celebrated at the LaurelHill Golf Club in Lorton, Virginia. Thecourse was designed by Bill Love andis both visually stunning and technicallychallenging. Antonio Tremols, PAIMAExecutive Director commented: “We

were impressed with the golf club’slong-time history and involvement withenvironmental issues.”

The 2018 PAIMA conference will beheld at the Gaylord National Resort &Convention Center from 2-4 October.Make sure you save the date.

New Time Slotsystem makesPort of Hamburgeven lessattractive toshippers

he Port of Hamburg has always been morecomplicated and time consuming for importclearances of personal effects and cars than

Germany’s other major port, Bremerhaven, which PAIMA has for many yearsrecommended to its members.

Now Hamburg has made using the port even lessattractive by introducing a so called Time Slot procedurefor trucks using the port.

In practice, this means that all trucking companies nowhave to book a fixed time (within 1 hour) when their truckwill arrive at the Hamburg terminal to drop off or to pickup a container.

With heavy traffic and delays on German roads, thisnarrow time slot is often unavoidably missed resulting inthe drivers having to wait for many hours to drop off orpick up their shipments.

In addition, Hamburg customs officers sometimes decideat the last minute that an X-ray is needed for a selectedimport container, meaning the driver has to wait until thechecks can be carried out before leaving the port.

As a result, truck drivers and port agents can no longerguarantee an accurate time of delivery for goods passingthrough the Port of Hamburg. These are early days for thenew time slot system and things may well improve in thefuture. However, for the time being at least PAIMA willcontinue to recommend Bremerhaven for shipments to andfrom Germany.

ashington DC, as all Americanschool children will know, wasnamed after the country’s first

president George Washington andfounded in 1790, one year after hiselection. George selected the site forthe Presidential Mansion. Sadly, henever got to live in the mansion, thathonor fell to his successor JohnAdams in 1800, the year afterGeorge’s death.

In August 1814 the mansion was badlydamaged by the British in what came to beknown as The Burning of Washington whenmuch of the city was destroyed by fire. Asudden and ferocious storm - probably ahurricane – quickly put out the flames alsokilling many of the invading British troops, aswell as a number of American citizens. TheBritish occupation was short lived, lasting littlemore than 24 hours, and the people ofWashington were able to return and beginrebuilding their city including theirpresidential palace, which they painted whiteto cover the scorch marks made by the fire:it’s been known as The White House eversince.

he world’s firstautonomous electriccontainer ship, Yara

Birkeland, is due to beginoperating in the latter halfof 2018 according to itsNorwegian buildersKongsberg.

The ship was commissioned byfertilizer manufacture Yara andwas named after the company’sfounder, the famous scientist andinnovator Kristian Birkeland. Thenew vessel will reduce NOx andCO2 emissions and improve road

safety by removing up to 40,000truck journeys in populated urbanareas when it begins shippingproducts from Yara's productionplant in Porsgrunn, to Brevik andLarvik in Norway. The YaraBirkeland will be a 120TEU,open-top container ship, batterypowered and prepared forautonomous and unmannedoperation.Yara Birkeland will initiallyoperate as a manned vessel, moving to remote operation in2019. It is expected to be

capable of performing fullyautonomous operations from2020. The new zero-emissionvessel will be a game-changer forglobal maritime transport.Kongsberg was responsible fordevelopment and delivery of allkey enabling technologies onYara Birkeland including thesensors and integration requiredfor remote and autonomousoperations, in addition to theelectric drive, battery andpropulsion control systems.Geir Håøy, President and CEO of

Shipping industryvulnerable tocyberattacks

yber criminals can attackanywhere – including at sea. Theshipping industry is not immune

to cyberattacks. In fact, it may beespecially vulnerable, and newtechnological advances could makethe situation worse. Ken Munro, ofcyber security expert Pen TestPartners, has outlined some of thesecurity risks plaguing ships. Kensaid a major issue lies in maritimesatellite communications, whichsometimes supply an abundance ofinformation that could be used inphishing scams. Weak passwordsexacerbate the problem. Manyorganizations use systems that weredeveloped before cybersecurity wasa top concern.

High-tech ships could be vulnerable tohacking. The Yara Birkeland is anautonomous container ship developed byNorwegian company Yara International; theship is expected to launch in 2018 (see page17). Meanwhile, in an 88-page white paper,

Rolls-Royce makes the case that autonomousships should be the future of the shippingindustry and have the potential to reduceoperating costs.

While this is exciting for the shipping industry, some may see reason for caution regardingincreases in automation.

We’ve already seen that modern, highlyconnected cars are vulnerable to hackers. In2015, an article inWired Magazine detailedhow it was possible to control a Jeepremotely, going so far as to cut thetransmission. As cars become controlled moreby computers, and less by humans, the fear isthat the risk of hacking will only grow.

It seems reasonable to apply some of thesame worries to ships. In fact, researchers atthe University of Texas in Austin proved thatan $80 million yacht could be driven off itscourse by manipulating its GPS system.

Piracy could go high-techAlthough it’s nothing like what you see in themovies, modern piracy definitely exists – as

the International Maritime Bureau's (IMB)Piracy Report Map, which shows the locationof all reported pirate attacks for the year, makes clear. The map includes incidentswhere ships were boarded, fired upon orhijacked.

In a future filled with autonomous ships, it’seasy to imagine pirates taking advantage ofunmanned vessels and taking whatever bootythey want. It’s also conceivable that high-techpirates could hack autonomous ships forvarious criminal purposes.

On the bright side, unmanned autonomousships would decrease the risk of one piratethreat: ransom. These days, many pirates takecrew members hostage to demand ransom, but if there’s no crew, there will be no one onboard to take hostage!

igh Relo in Korea hasprovided a specialist ‘whitegloves’ service for the

Italian Olympic Committee formoving goods to Pyeongchangfor this year’s winter Olympics. The company stepped in withvery little time to spare asdeadlines came close and thechosen contractor was unable toprovide the service required.

At the Rio Olympic Games the ItalianOlympic Committee used DHL for itslogistic needs, however, this had onlybeen a door-to-(outside) door servicewith the Olympic committee doing theunpacking themselves. They had greatdifficulty reassembling the furniturewhich caused chaos at the time.

For the Winter Olympics they plannedto use Hanjin Transportation as theirofficial freight forwarder in Korea.Unfortunately, their booked carrierHapag Lloyd’s vessel skipped a sailingand its arrival at Busan port was notexpected until 5 February. Consideringthe clearance process and the inlandhaulage, it was unlikely that the goodswould arrive by the opening ceremonyon 9 February. So, they contactedBright Yoon at High Relo for a solution.“I suggested they convert all surfaceshipments, 3 x 40’ HC containers, intoair shipments when the vessel arrived inSingapore,” said Bright.

Bright appointed The Family Movers inSingapore to handle the job: JenneFung and one other member of staffworked all weekend to supervise thetransfer of the shipment. The completeconsignment arrived in Korea on 31January with delivery to Pyeongchangby 6 February.

“During the delivery our crews had towork in -17°C but it felt even colderbecause of the wind chill,” said Bright.“They were really struggling, eventhough they were wearing uniforms andear muffs.”

The furniture included unique works ofgreat artistic value. All the items wereof different shapes and sizes, includingan octopus-shaped sofa and a clothespeg-shaped bench. “Even the designerof the furniture had a hard time readingthe assembly drawing,” said Bright.

With hard work and a large element ofskill, however, the chaps from High Relogot the job done in time for the openingnight. “Though this project required usto work long days, it was veryrewarding.”

The futureof removals

n the last 20 years the Internet hastransformed everything, soimagine transporting televisions,

computers and other electronicdevices 20 years from now; it’sreasonable to assume that everythingrelated to transporting heavy itemswill be outdated by then. In 2040, itis possible that trucks will have givenway to drones; the walls, foundationsand bricks of our houses would haveintegrated electronic microchipsmaking any surface an improvisedtelevision or computer; when weenter a room a succession of imageswill be activated to choose the onethat we like the most by vocalcommand, like the famous scene ofBack to the Future II.

Grupo Amygo recently celebrated its 20thanniversary. Here we interview JesúsRodríguez, Commercial Director of GrupoAmygo, to see what the next 20 years mighthave in store.

How was the process ofadapting such a traditionaltrade to new technology? Our management, the services we provideand the needs of our customers have all beenevolving at the same time that technology hasbeen changing. For example, 20 years agoin Spain there was not so much demand forinternational removals and yet this demandtoday is growing day by day as thepopulation movements increase. The world ismore global, Spaniards have lost the fear ofchanging where they live and our companiesare successfully expanding the world lookingfor new business opportunities.

The habits of clients have changed a lot too, with the Internet allowing clients to researchand compare in ways that were neverpossible before. There is a huge world ofdigital information available to clients so wemust be attentive to their new needs as theyarise. Technically, communications with e-mailand file transfers have been streamlined, especially for international transactions. Before everything was done by telex, by faxand through couriers. The process is nowfaster and more secure.

Do you still get enquiries byphone? Most requests for services reach us via theInternet, e-mail or WhatsApp. Only specificcases come to us via telephone. By electronicmeans it is safer, it is written and it is mucheasier and faster to manage. Although thereis still a small, more traditional group ofpeople that like to use the phone.

In Spain, is there a particulartype of client? What is yourexperience? There are different types of clients withdifferent needs. A young couple or a singleperson that changes residence does not needthe same thing as a family with three or fourchildren. Likewise, the needs of a youngperson who moves to another city for theirfirst job are different from those of a couplewho retire to their beach house to enjoy theirwell-earned free time. The services they needand the budget they have to spend arecompletely different. At Grupo Amygo wepersonalize the service according to thedemand and we give a number of options forall budgets, always with total transparency. No hidden expenses.

I

Are moves from throughout your regionmore or less the same or do they havespecific characteristics? In general, they are very similar, except for the Islands thatneed more reinforced packaging as there is maritime trafficand there are geographical areas that occasionally ask forhourly budgets (as in Catalonia), but we strongly discouragethis as it is impossible to guarantee a fixed cost and there aresurprises in the bill.

How dependent are international andnational moves on the Internet? Could youmanage without it?Today a move cannot be done without using the Internet in theprocess (request and sending of budget, exchange ofdocumentation and transport management). The Internet is ourmain tool.

20 years ago we did not imagine that we could, for example, reserve a room or book a rental house over the Internet, suchas with Airbnb.

Do you think a change of this kind couldaffect the moving industry? How do yousee the future in another 20 years?I would like to have a crystal ball so I can anticipate whatclients would need in the future. In general terms, I think weare going to meet a very demanding customer, who will giveus very little notice, who wants to pay as little as possible, andwho will have a lot of information about removal companiesthat will share their information through social networks. But Istill believe they will look for solid companies that offerguaranteed and proven security; and that quality seals, such asISO 9000 and ISO 14000, are going to be more valued.

In terms of logistics, we will work more with national andinternational transport suppliers to speed up delivery times andlower costs. There will be more mobility but with smallervolumes. Obviously, the technology is going to change themanagement of the process a lot. The move towards virtualvisits on a mobile or tablet will continue. It saves time, theclient’s privacy is maintained, it is much more agile and thecosts are lower.

To what do you attribute the success ofGrupo Amygo? There is no secret. We just maintain a high quality of work, are honest, provide sincere advice and do what we say.We never promise what we cannot do. We work hard, withperseverance and empathy and, if a problem arises, we finda quick solution for the customer.

Why choose Grupo Amygo?Well precisely because of what I just said: honesty andtransparency, for the quality of the service, for the good price, for the effectiveness and professionalism of all the team, andbecause our clients end up being more than customers: theyend up being Amygos.

rupo Amygo and itsfriends have celebratedthe company’s 20th

anniversary during aweekend full of meetings andactivities in January.

It was in 1998 that the six foundingmembers of Group Amygo met todiscuss experiences and to plan forthe future with shared objectives anddetermination. Soon a further sevencompanies joined and the 13 friendssigned a pact committing to work tothe same code of honor andperformance and to work with eachother for their mutual benefit. This ‘Allfor one and one for all’ approachsoon achieved success by land, seaand air in five continents.

Over the last 20 years the Group hasevolved to become a major player inthe local, national and internationalsectors. One key milestone was whenthe French Demeco Group joined in2012. Virginie Brunel, GeneralDirector of Demeco Group andStéphane Sardet, CommercialDirector of Demeco Group praisedthe direction chosen by the founders, mentioning specifically JesúsRodriguez and Eugenio de la Iglesia. They said that the organization hadshown perseverance, know-how,understanding and adaptability tokeep the company growing, even intimes of crisis.

The years have seen much change. In the last 20 years the Internet hasbeen born and the digital revolutionhas changed everything with mobiledevices, and many technologicaladvances that the moving industryembraced. Gone were the YellowPages advertisements and businesscards; now everything is doneonline. In this way, the anniversaryfor Grupo Amygo marks the beforeand after for the removals industry.

Grupo Amygo now employs 250people, has 115 specializedvehicles, has 20 members and workswith an extensive network of partnersworldwide. When a neworganization starts little is certain, however, the synergies that theGroup Amygo has enjoyed over thelast 20 years have created its successand will continue to do so into thefuture.

s of the fourth quarter of last year, Twitteraveraged around 330 million monthly usersworldwide. In the UK alone, more than 17 million

active users have been forecast for this year. That’s 17million people logging into their accounts on at leastone occasion per month, and 17 million potentialcustomers. So, no matter how small your business is,this micro-blogging site isn’t something that should beignored.

But understanding how Twitter works is a whole different ball gamewhen compared with Facebook. The use of Twitter as a platform isnot the same for a start: Twitter can be used as a news site, a placeto post/read opinions, somewhere to share content, or a form ofcommunication with brands (complaints or otherwise). It doesn’thave the personal elements and the same level of family/friendconnections as Facebook.

For the moving industry in particular, this can be a good thing. In away, Twitter is strictly business and strictly content sharing (as wellas politics, of course). But getting it wrong can be harmful to yourbrand. So how can you ensure maximum engagement withpotential customers? Here are five tips for Twitter marketingbeginners in the moving industry.

1. Manage your expectationsAccording to Digitaltrends.com, some of the most engaging topicson Twitter of 2017 were the Super Bowl, Trump’s inauguration andTV shows like Game of Thrones or Stranger Things. Politics, celebsand culture rule the Twittersphere, so moving companies aren’texactly going to be Twitter stars. But that doesn’t mean you can’t besuccessful within your niche. It’s important to manage expectationsfrom the start and understand that Twitter, like other social media, isa long-term branding project. Lead generation can be achievedwith momentum, but the main focus should be building your brand.

2. Have a strategy to get followersGetting followers isn’t going to be easy when you start an accountfor the first time. Don’t expect to see the followers rolling in withouta fair bit of hard work. The first thing you will need to do ispersonalize your page. Default avatars and banner images suggestinactivity, so brand your profile well and make your page lookappealing. Then you will need to follow relevant people withinyour industry and try and connect with local businesses in yourarea. Networking is something that other businesses areinterested in too and they are likely to follow you back. For B2C targeting, incentives can work very well.

3. Share relevant contentThe most successful strategy for gaining followers is to do itorganically. To do this, you need to make your tweets relevant,

interesting and useful. Some of thetop moving industry Twitter accountsare known for tweeting ‘how to’guides to engage their audience. Ifyou have a company blog, Twitterwill work as the perfect platform forposting links. And if you don’t havea blog, you can share articles fromother reputable sources. There areno rules about what content you canpost (as long as it’s not offensive ordetrimental to your own business).

4. Understand the hashtagHashtags aren’t just for kids; they’re used by very seriousprofessionals and respected influencers. And by jumping on theright hashtag, you could widen your outreach every time you tweet. But using them badly can lead to a bit of a social nosedive. Localhashtags are the best way of easing yourself into the world ofhashtagging and could help to make meaningful connections withcustomers who require your service. Trending hashtag topics (suchas TV programs, political elections and celeb news) are unlikely tobe relevant to a moving company, but seasonal hashtags can be agreat way of sharing any promotions you have.

5. Respond to customersOne of the biggest mistakes that small companies make whenstarting up a Twitter account is being inactive. Social media users, particularly millennials, expect instant gratification online. So, forTwitter-based customer service queries, people usually want a fastresponse. Social media platforms open a whole new channel forcustomer relationship management, so having someone checkingdaily is important. Always respond to customers and always resolvecomplaints/issues without delay. Being seen to turn around aproblem successfully and honorably is great for your brand and willhelp you stand out as a trusted moving company over competitors.

Encouraging customers to follow you on Twitter or share pictures oftheir move for a special discount code can be a great way ofboosting positive interaction too. This is a great way of getting newfollowers and expanding your reach.

nline freight forwarder iContainers says that theongoing truck driver shortage problem plaguing theUS at the moment is still to intensify. The problem,

worsened by an overactive hurricane season which affectedtrucking in the Gulf region and high demand from thefestive season, has caused rates for hiring long-distancetrucks to soar. An unexpected rough winter for the country’ssouth further compounded the problem and to makematters worse, capacity shrank even further when theElectronic Logging Devices (ELD) mandate kicked in inDecember 2017.

The ELD mandate in particular has had hard-hitting effects on all playersacross the massive logistics industry. Trying to secure a container for anFCL load within a two-week window has proved cumbersome. Manyshippers currently find themselves faced with either shipping only thenecessary or paying exorbitant prices to load. According to Miami-basediContainers, it has faced as many as up to three truck cancellations aweek amid all this turmoil.

“For us, the main issue has been the additional workload that goes intofinding coverage for all our truck movements. Just this year alone, wehave had several cases where truckers confirmed that a load was goodto go in the morning only for them to cancel a few hours later. In some ofthese cases, it is entirely possible that the drivers simply decided to takeon another load that’s more profitable,” said Klaus Lysdal, Vice Presidentof Sales and Operations at iContainers.

The shortage means that as a natural market tendency, truck drivers’ payis expected to rise. “So far, rate increases have not been all thatsignificant and probably still quite far from what they can be with theway things are looking at the moment,” said Klaus. “The current situationis still going to last a while. It will basically get worse before it starts to

improve. The pressure on the market right now will probably have toexist for a while to facilitate an industry-wide rate increase.”

Truck driver shortage in itself isn’t a recent problem in the US. Over thepast decade or so, the trucking industry has struggled to fill enoughpositions to meet demand. According to Klaus it all boils down tofinancial factors, with the ELD mandate further exacerbating the problem.

“Congestion and wait times were already proving to be big enoughproblems at most major ports and rail yards,” he said. “Now, with theELD, it’s hitting drivers even harder. It’s a major factor as it restrictsdrivers’ ability to make money. Wait times at the port are another majorfactor. Drivers want to be on the road, driving and making money on themileage they cover. Sitting in line at the port does not pay the bills andwith the ELD regulations, it now means that time spent waiting in line eatsaway at their driving time.”

The US Midwest has been particularly badly affected by the shortage. But the problem appears to be worsening all along the East Coast. Downsouth, Texas and Louisiana are also facing issues. iContainers saysexporters and importers should plan for more cushion time whenmanaging their cargo and face the possibility of paying more to secure adriver. It’s also advising shippers to consider rerouting their cargo tocertain ports with a better gating setup.

“It may be more reliable to route your cargo via a port where the gatingprocess works smoother,” said Klaus. “That way, it’s open to receivetruckers even at night instead of within a compact eight-hour window. This may mean a higher cost to truck the container to a further destinationbut, given the current circumstances, you may end up winning in the longrun.”
