Spring 2017
Dear Fellows & Members,
It is indeed a great honour to be elected as President of the College for the next
12 months. I must thank my predecessor, Dr S K Chan, who had led the
College in an exemplary fashion for the last 2 years and has passed onto me
an institution in such rude health.
In December last year, the College Council welcomed Dr Raymond Y L Mak,
joining the Council as a new member and the returning Council Members - Dr
Rony S Y Cho, Dr Daniel T S Fang, Dr Katherine C M Leung, Dr Edmond H
N Pow and Dr Ricky W K Wong. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dr Stanley M L Lai,
who did not stand for re-election last November, for his sterling work as the Chairman of the Scientific
Meetings Committee from 2015-17.
At the College Conferment Ceremony held on 06 November 2016, Honorary Fellowship of our College
was bestowed upon Professor Esmonde F Corbet for his dedication and many contributions to
undergraduate and postgraduate dental educations and specialist training in Hong Kong since 1980.
At the same ceremony, 17 fellows from 7 specialties and 22 members were admitted.
January this year marked the beginning of a new 3-year cycle of the HKAM CME/CPD Programme for
our fellows and MGD members. In response to the HKAM's desire to see all fellows obtaining less
passive CME/CPD points, the maximum number of recognized passive CME/CPD points for our
College fellows is 70 points and for our MGD members, 47 points in this current cycle.

Internationally, we are fully engaged with our sister colleges. Our College and the Royal College of
Surgeons of Edinburgh have organised conjoint Membership/Intermediate examinations for 20 years
for our trainees from 6 specialties. In the Specialty of Community Dentistry, 2 diets of the
MRACDS(DPH)/Intermediate examination with the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons
(RACDS) had already taken place. Our relationship with RACDS also involves training and
examination of general dental practitioners via our Membership in General Dentistry programme, which
has been conjoined with the MRACDS (GDP) examination since the 2012-14 diet.
The prime function of the College is the training of dental specialists to cater for the dental needs of the
Hong Kong public. To do so, 8 specialist training pathways have been established since the inception
of the College. We are tasked with the organization and smooth running of these pathways through
the Education and Examination Committee and the respective Specialty Boards. As echoed by my
predecessor, Dr S K Chan, the College also has to maintain the standards of the training programmes.
This is of paramount importance and the College has the prerogative to voice out our concerns, if for
whatever reasons, the standards are likely to be compromised.

Joint Scientific Meeting, 20-21 November 2016
Last year, our College joint hands with the Faculty of Dentistry of the University of Hong Kong and the
Hong Kong Dental Association in the organization of the 2016 Hong Kong International Symposium
in Peri-implantitis held from 20 to 21 November 2016 at the Prince Philip Dental Hospital.
Three prominent scholars and experts in periodontology and implant dentistry were invited: Professor
Joerg Meyle from Germany, Professor Stefan Renvert from Sweden and Dr Jean-Louis Giovannoli from
France. The one-day symposium on the first day addressed the increasingly challenging issue of peri-
implantitis. Topics included:-
Epidemiology and pathogenesis of peri-implantitis
Can we prevent peri-implantitis? Patient-related factors
What types of patients are more likely to develop peri-implantitis diseases? Patient and site related
risk indicators
Diagnosis & treatment strategy (including early infections, retrograde peri-implantitis)
Initial treatment planning: To keep or remove the implant. Is non-surgical treatment useful?
Implant therapy in periodontitis patients
Soft tissue management around implants
Surgical Therapies I & II: Regenerative approach
Surgical Therapy III: Resective approach
Maintenance, biofilm management and long-term results of peri-implant treatment
Though it was a long day, the symposium was enthusiastically attended by 128 participants.
The half-day hands-on masterclass course in the next morning attracted 41 participants who had also
attended the one-day symposium to acquaint with firsthand experience of implant placement and crater
preparation, surface decontamination and surgical management. It was indeed an exceptional
opportunity for participants to learn and gain valuable knowledge and know-hows from the three
masters in periodontology and implant dentistry.

Spring Scientific Meeting, 21 May 2017
What is one thing in Dentistry that everyone would have experienced, wish someone else who would
have instead, and no one wants to talk about willingly?
Challenges.
Stay tune for the upcoming CDSHK Spring Scientific Meeting. The theme is "Challenges in Dentistry
---- How would we best manage them?"
The presentation will be structured in a way that would appeal to dentists who are not necessarily
specialists in that particular field, with practical tips and hints in handling such cases in the dental office.
The topics range from dealing with Endodontic failure, Periodontal complications, difficulties in Oral
Surgical procedures, to managing the "difficult" patient.
Treating complications is challenging enough. It is equally important to avoid such occurrences with
appropriate assessment and correct diagnosis. The dilemma in dental age assessment in Paedodontics
and "hidden dangers" in Orthodontics will be presented.
So mark your diary on 21st May. More details will follow. As this Spring Scientific Meeting will be
held at Lecture Theatre I, Prince Philip Dental Hospital, there is limited seating. Kindly send in the
form early to avoid disappointment.

CME/CPD Award and Administration
The following changes are applicable to the 2017-2019 cycle which is effective from 1 January 2017.
Self-arranged Study Group
Self-arranged study group in the form of experience sharing for clinical dental cases is accepted as a
form of CME/CPD activity. The size of the group should be kept between 4 and 8 participants. Only
CDSHK Fellow Specialists / MGD Holders / Higher Trainees can gain CME/CPD credits under this
category of activity. Participants must include at least 1 Fellow and at least 3 other participants who
should be the members of the College (i.e. Fellows / MGD Holders / Higher Trainees). Non pre‐
approved organization should seek prior approval from the College. During the conduction of the
activity, rules governing the confidentiality of patient information must be observed.
Submissions of case summaries together with the attendance form are mandatory for consideration of
CME/CPD credits. A maximum of 1 point may be awarded for each activity and study group activities
may be awarded a maximum of 5 points per 3-year cycle for each applicant.
Administration for CDSHK Higher Trainees
Upon recommendation of the Education & Examination Committee, the College Council has resolved
that it is mandatory for Higher Trainees of ALL specialties to obtain a minimum of 30 CME/CPD points
per year so as to fulfil CDSHK Membership requirement and satisfactory annual trainee assessment.
In general, CME/CPD requirement before the exit examination of that year will be counted on a pro-
rata basis up to the end of the month before the final date of application for the exit
examination. However, it will also be subject to the actual requirement of each Specialty.
Every Trainee should keep a record of his/her own CME/CPD activities and should provide evidence
of such activities in order to facilitate the College Secretariat to issue an annual report as part of his/her
Higher Training annual assessment. A standardized table in Excel format will be sent to every trainee
via email for record of such activities. Annual subscription for CDSHK CME/CPD administration
will be waived.

HKAM Council Dinner with Distinguished Young Fellows
Since 2013, the Academy Council has initiated a dinner gathering with distinguished young fellows
from constituent Colleges so to recognize their achievements and give an opportunity for them to meet
and share their experiences with HKAM’s Council Members and distinguished young fellows of sister
Colleges.
Each College is invited to nominate 1 or 2 distinguished individuals who are (according to priority):
1. Young Fellows (who have obtained their fellowship within 5 years); or
2. Potential Fellows who are still trainees at the moment.
Each year, the College Council invites every specialty board to make one nomination, if any. The major
selection criteria are based on the nominee’s achievements and contributions to his/her respective
specialty. Among all the nominees, the College Council selects one or two Fellows/Trainees to attend
the dinner.

Specialty Education and Training Development Fund (SETDF)
The aim of the Specialty Education and Training Development Fund (SETDF) is to encourage Specialty
Boards and the Committee in General Dentistry (CGD) to organize or conduct education and training
activities for trainees, fellows, members, and/or trainers.
The second 2-year cycle of application for the SETDF had started in April 2016, and a maximum
accumulative amount of HKD30,000 will be allocated to each specialty/CGD. So far, the Specialty
Boards in Community Dentistry, Endodontics, Periodontology and Prosthodontics had organized their
first functions under this fund on 26 April 2016, 14 July 2016, 10 October 2014 and 3 July 2015
respectively.
The specialty boards give positive feedback and view that the fund provides an opportunity to nurture
trainer-trainee relationship which is essential for building a stronger team of trainers as well as
encouraging trainees along the road to becoming a specialist.
Towards the close of the funding application, the College Council will look into the possibility of
extending the period of provision for the SETDF and will keep the Specialty Board/CGD Chairmen
updated.
CDSHK Scholarship
The College of Dental Surgeons of Hong Kong Scholarship (“Scholarship”) has been set up to support
Fellows admitted in or after the year 2012 and higher trainees in our specialist training pathways to
participate in overseas training. Preference will be given to young Fellows, i.e. those who are admitted
within the previous 5 years.
The maximum amount of the Scholarship will be HK$50,000 for the year 2017. The training
programme will be self-arranged for duration of not more than 8 weeks and needs prior approval by the
College Council. The Scholarship cannot be held in conjunction with any other award, grant or
sponsorship that will give financial support for the same training.
Successful applicants will be required to write reflections about their training which will be published
in the College Publication and they may be required to participate in some College activities in the
subsequent year, for example, representing the College in some promotion functions, etc.

Deadline for application is 31 July 2017.
