CircuitCity's approximately 600 US locales are primarily superstores (known for their broad selections and competitive pricing)that sell audio and video equipment, as well as PCs. The company is revamping itssuperstores and is no longer selling appliances, favoring more profitable items such as home office products.

Most Circuit City superstores range from 9,500 to 43,000 sq. ft. In order to make up for the shrinking profit levels amongPC sales, the company has turned to hot−ticket items such as satellite television systems and cellular phones.

In 2003 Circuit City began cutting jobs with the goal of reducing the number of salespeople by about 2,000. The companyalso began a large−scale store revitalization initiative; by September more than 200 stores had been relocated, remodeled,or refixtured. Its growth plans call for about 65 superstore openings during 2004; more than half will be relocations. Thecompany is also expanding through planned acquisitions of InterTAN (Canadian electronics retailer) and MusicNow(digital music platform).

Continuing its renewed focus on its retail operations, Circuit City is selling its private−label credit card operations (CircuitCity card, Circuit City Plus Visa card) to Bank One.

History

While on vacation in Richmond, Virginia, in 1949, Samuel Wurtzel learned from a local barber that the first TV station inthe South was about to go on the air. Wurtzel decided to launch a southern TV retailing operation and founded WardsCompany (an acronym for family names Wurtzel, Alan, Ruth, David, and Samuel) in Richmond that year, graduallydiversifying into small appliances. Wards went public in 1961. Throughout the 1960s and early 1970s, Wards expandedby acquiring several appliance retailers. Samuel's son Alan joined the business in 1966, when the company was focusedon selling stereos. Predicting the end of the stereo boom, Alan converted the stores into full−line electronics specialtyretailers.

Wards took a bold step in 1975, when it spent half of its net worth to open an electronics superstore in Richmond. It wasan immediate success, and in 1981 it branched into the New York City market with the purchase of Lafayette RadioElectronics. The company found itself unable to compete with exuberant competitors in New York, such as Crazy Eddie(which went out of business), and abandoned the market. From its New York experience, Wards developed a strategy ofblitzing single markets in the South and the West with a high number of stores. In 1984 the company changed its name toCircuit City Stores.

Two years later Alan stepped down as CEO, and company leadership passed to Richard Sharp, a former computerconsultant who had designed Circuit City's computerized sales system. Sharp made it a priority to maintain an efficientdistribution and records system. Earnings slipped in 1990 as consumer spending dropped and the industry was slow tointroduce new products. During this time, Circuit City started opening mall stores named Impulse and introduced theCircuit City credit card.

Circuit City began selling recorded music in its superstores in 1992. The next year it entered Chicago with 18 stores andrenamed its Impulse stores Circuit City Express. Also in 1993 Circuit City opened its first used−car−retailing venture, aCarMax dealership in Richmond. (The company offered a CarMax tracking stock in 1997.)

Rival Best Buy surpassed Circuit City's sales in fiscal year 1996, partly due to Best Buy's aggressive expansion. That yearCircuit City and Mexico City−based electronics retailer Grupo Elektra launched a service whereby products bought atCircuit City stores in the US could be picked up at Elektra stores in Mexico. The next year the firm opened superstores inthe New York City metropolitan area, part of its ongoing expansion.

The company formed joint venture Digital Video Express (Divx) in 1998, offering DVD players and movies onlimited−use, disposable discs available in Circuit City outlets and other stores. Lack of support from movie studios andother retailers forced an end to Divx in 1999, incurring about a $375 million loss.

In an effort to compete with online computer retailers, in 1999 the company began offering $400 rebates to customerswho signed up with Internet service provider CompuServe. In June 2000 president and COO Alan McCollough replacedSharp as CEO, who remains chairman. The following month Circuit City began a $1 billion remodeling plan for itssuperstores that would phase out major appliances in favor of high−profit consumer electronics and home office products.

Chairman Richard Sharp stepped down in June 2002; president and CEO McCollough took on his responsibilities aschairman of the board. In October 2002 Circuit City Stores spun off its CarMax unit as an independent entity. In late 2003the company sold its credit card operations to FleetBoston Financial, a move intended to allow the retailer to focus on itsstore improvement plans.
