The Nelson-Atkins Museum ofArt
The year 2001 is an exciting time to be involved with The Nelson-Museum perhaps the most exciting since the Museum first opendoors in 1933. The first phase of the building program is well undwith an accelerating schedule of construction between now and 200both the new wing and renewed spaces in this building will be open
building program has been made possible by the highly gratifying success of the GenerationsCampaign, which has raised more than $206 million for construction and program endowmthe same time, the Museum is mounting a series of outstanding special exhibitions and pursinitiatives in education and outreach. The beginning of the 21st century has also inspired doto add significant works of art to the permanent collection, which will enable visitors to enjtreasures among familiar favorites.
None of these advances would have been possible without the Museums many friends mdonors, visitors or the leadership of the board of trustees and other volunteers. The profstaff has worked tirelessly to help design the new building and programs, and to provide a riprogram for current visitors. We are all tremendously grateful to our volunteers and staff whcommitment makes possible this great drive that will carry the Nelson-Atkins to a new levelworld of American museums.
Generations Capital Campaign
Adele Hall and Morton Sosland did a brilliant job as co-chairs of the Generations Capital CAs the talk by Morton, which is included in this report, makes clear, the Campaign set a newfor philanthropy in this community by achieving total giving in excess of $206 million. The of the trustees was exemplary and established a climate in which gifts from others also flourThese funds will be invested in the construction of the new wing, the underground garage, athe infrastructure to support these new spaces, as well as adding to the endowment that will possible new and expanded programs for our community.
I am glad to be able to report at the same time that the Museums annual operating budget enthe black, as the figures in this report show. The Museums membership income increased appr15% over the previous year. Attendance for the year 20002001 was 331,892.

Special Exhibitions and Educational Programs
Attendance is always influenced by the special exhibition program. This year Winslow Homer and theCritics: Forging a National Art in the 1870swas very popular with a broad range of visitors. The yearsother exhibitions offered a varied diet:American Photography: Recent Additions to the Hallmark PhotographicCollection; Drawing and Painting; The Architecture of Reassurance: Designing the Disney Theme Parks; Tempus Fugit:Time Flies, the award-winning millennial exhibition that was generously supported by the NationalEndowment for the Arts; and Snake Goddesses of Ancient India, an exhibition that complemented thescholarly symposium on Pre-Kushan art. Tempus Fugit: Time Flieswas one of only three exhibitions
nationwide to receive support from the joint NEA-White House initiative. Significantly, five of theseexhibitions were initiated and curated by our own curators.
Education and outreach continue to be the Museums top priorities, and expanded spaces foreducational programs are one of the key goals of the building program. It was, therefore, particularlygratifying when Ford Motor Company stepped forward this year to make a major gift to create theFord Learning Center in the much-expanded new spaces that will be created on the ground floor ofthis building. Meanwhile, the education department increased the number of popular Creative ArtsCenter workshops, family programs, and activities related to the Egyptian mummy, Tempus FugitandHomer exhibitions. Using feedback from visitors and schools, the education department also workedwith the curator of African art to reinterpret the African galleries in a format to make them moremeaningful to visitors. The program of training teen guides was expanded by 55% and now goesyear-round. A total of 59,510 visitors took an organized Museum tour during the year.
Acquisitions for the Permanent Collection
Another important benefit of the Museums new wing and renovated galleries in this building will beour ability to display more of the Museums permanent collection. Happily, the permanent collectioncontinues to grow in numbers and quality. The landmark gift last year of 83 works of modern andcontemporary sculpture, previously on long-term loan to the Museum, by the Hall Family Foundationestablished at one stroke the Museums preeminence in this field. Master works by Henry Moore,Isamu Noguchi, Constantin Brancusi, Alberto Giacometti, Magdalena Abakanowicz and many otheroutstanding 20th-century sculptors are included in this supremely generous gift. Also remarkable wasthe gift of 106 pieces of the Folgers Coffee Silver Collection from the Procter & Gamble Company, objects collected by the late Joseph S. Atha. Four American paintings from the collection of Julia andHumbert Tinsman also came to the Museum last year.
This stream of additions to the permanent collection included the purchase of the first threecontemporary works from the funds made available by the William T. Kemper Foundation, CommerceBank, Trustee. The works acquired are two paintings by Elizabeth Murray, Art Part; and Bridget Riley,
Arrest 2; along with a sculpture by Anish Kapoor, Six Secret Places. The Kemper Foundation, withmagnanimous generosity, has committed $10 million over ten years to acquire contemporary paintings.Another significant acquisition was the purchase of an exceptional piece of 16th-century Africansculpture from the Mali culture, Horse and Rider, with funds generously provided by Shirley and BarnettHelzberg and the George H. and Elizabeth O. Davis Fund. A great boon to the Native-Americandepartment was the bequest by Donald D. Jones of 178 pieces from his collection of Indian basketry, arms and armor, ceramics, and ceremonial objects. A distinguished American portrait, Katherine Sehon,by John Sloan, was presented to the Museum in memory of Carol Levin by members of her family.
Richard Stern gave the Museum two highly desirable works, an album of paintings by the eighteenthcentury master Zhang Ruoai and an elegantly carved Japanese lacquered wood sculpture of theBuddha. Mrs. Richard R. Nelson presented a superb pair of English silver candelabra by Paul Storr.Other generous donations of art during the year came from the estate of Menefee D. Blackwell, theHonorable and Mrs. Thomas F. Eagleton, Leonard and Louise Riggio, Fifi White, and the estate ofIlse Bing Wolf, among others.
Construction of the New Building
Uniting all these activities is the vision of the new Nelson-Atkins Museum in the year 2006, whenthe exhibition of our collections will be greatly expanded and visitors will be able to enjoy the newgalleries, classrooms, and all of the other amenities of the new spaces. The addition of approximately150,000 square feet will increase the present space of 232,000 square feet by 64%. We are nowin Phase I of the construction program. Phase I includes the new building, the renovation of theeducation space on the ground floor of this building, the connection of the old and new spaces, the renovation of the central plant, and the new underground parking garage. The schedule callsfor the garage to be completed in the summer of 2002, when work on the new building itself willcommence. Its construction will require two and a half years, with completion scheduled in December2004. Thereafter, readying the new spaces for visitors and installation of art will require more thana year. The opening of the expanded Museum is expected to be in the spring of 2006.
Planning by the Museums trustees and staff, starting in 1993, laid the g roundwork for the construc-tion program. To accomplish Phase I, the Museum has assembled an outstanding team, led by StevenHoll Architects, New York. Other team members include BNIM as associate architect; J. E. Dunn
Construction Company; and Lacy & Company as program manager and owners representative. These four firms work with the Museums trustee committees, Museum staff, and with outsidespecialists and consultants. As I write this letter in July 2001, the excavation of the parking garageis nearly complete, and visitors to the site behold a vast hole from which many tons of earth andlimestone have been removed. Concrete work will follow, and before too long we will all be able toenjoy the amenities of the new parking garage.
Meanwhile, please come to the Museum as often as you can. The exhibition schedule for the comingyear includes two outstanding offerings,Eternal Egypt: Masterworks of Ancient Art from The British MuseumandArt of the Lega: Meaning and Metaphor in Central Africa. There will also be a rich array of lectures, films, and educational programs throughout the year.
Finally, I want to acknowledge now and always the loyal support of all our members, who havesustained our efforts to strengthen the Museums programs, and to thank also the hundreds ofvolunteers who contribute their skills and time to extend the reach of our efforts. The membersand volunteers are our faithful and much appreciated friends.
Thank you again for your unparalleled support of the Museum. We are indeed grateful for yourtrust and confidence.

As someone who has done more than his share of fund-
raising in this community and across the nation, I donthesitate to say that the Generations Campaign belongs inthe record books.
Locally, the campaign far exceeded, by a factor of more thanthree, anything else anyone had ever raised. Producing morethan $200 million of private funding from this community, and thats where almost all of the money was raised, is somethingthat no one had even dreamed of.
This is an effort the community rallied to in ways that also are unique. Nothing says this more powerfullythan the fact that we raised considerably more than half of the total before we even had the concept of whatthe expansion would look like. From the formal launch in March 1997 through the end of 1998, we hadpledges totaling $135 million from people, foundations, and companies who were willing to accept on faiththat the Museum and its trustees knew what they were trying to do.
Our message in raising this money was primarily one centered on the trustees efforts to determine what thecommunity in total wanted of this place, what they thought it should be. Out of that came the twin goals ofa building expansion that would allow the display of the large parts of the collection that couldnt be shownin the present building, as well as endowing programs centered on extending the reach of this museum in thebroadest way possible to the total community.
An unusual part of our message had to do with what we called our Midwest ethicabout spending money. This meant that the Museums board of trustees had decided that the money should be raised before planswere completed and construction started. What we were going to build and endow would depend on howmuch money we raised not the other way around. I probably dont need to tell you how very different thisis from most other campaigns. To underscore this point, we didnt even have a model of what the expandedbuilding would look like until the effort had just about been completed.
With this relatively simple but convincing message and some pretty good talking skills on the part of mypartner, Adele Hall, and me, we went calling. And we did this without a full-color brochure, bringing with us
only a few pages of text meant mainly to prevent our overstepping. I dont know exactly how many calls wemade. But I do know that in a very busy couple of years, concentrated in the spring and autumn months, onlytwo prospects refused to see me to hear the story, and only one, after seeing me, did not make a gift. Ofcourse, we had some disappointments in gift size, but overall, the support overwhelmed us even as we as kedfor extraordinary, unprecedented sums.
Following the accepted fund-raising rote, we focused initially on the board oftrustees. But even here, with this group of special people who we were confidentwould do what was required, we got surprises on the high side, and ha rdly a singledisappointment the other way. Every member of the board, present and past, hasparticipated. We had $80 million of commitments from the board, past and present, toward an initial goal of $125 million when we first publicly announced thecampaign on March 11, 1997. Not so incidentally, that $80 million already was
more than any other institution had ever raised in our community. We also were ableto say in 1997 that we were embarking on a fund-raising effort equaled by only oneother museum, The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
Even before we were confident of reaching the initial $125 million goal, the staffand the board began to rethink what they were setting out to accomplish. Measuringwhat we hoped for against estimated costs, they asked in the fall of 1998 about thepossibility of raising the goal, from $125 million to $175 million. We scratched ourheads, examined the list of unmade calls, and said with a full measure of bravado,Yes, we can do that.
Armed then with a list of items that had increased the cost, we plowed ahead. Again, I need not tell you thatcalls after the initial rush typically get harder and harder. Ours certainly were not easier. But, once more, peopleresponded in extraordinary fashion, and by April 2000, we had signed pledges for $166 million and saw, inblissful happiness, that the $175 million goal was in sight.
Alas, though, another thunderbolt of reality hit my friends, the trustees, especially as the architect selectionprocess was by then under way. Serious discussions ensued, and the campaign accepted the conclusion that$175 million was not going to be enough. We decided against announcing a second increase, instead af firmingsotto voceto the powers-that-be that we hoped, even thought, we could get to $200 million.
Achieving that amazing figure totally depended on ourability to go back to the people who had been the mostgenerous the first time around and persuading them tostep up one more time. Adele and I did all of thesecalls together, and I can honestly say that Ive never had amore rewarding experience. Again, with but a single excep-tion, each person, company, or foundation we asked forincreased amounts came forward. In several cases, beforewe could even name a figure, we were told ofdecisions to increase gifts, in some instances exceeding
our expectations. It was an overwhelming and thrillingexperience, as we obtained $17 million of gifts withinthe span of a single month. All, I must emphasize, camefrom people who ha d given previously.

As is true of all such campaigns, the bulk has come from a relatively small number of givers from 47 giftsof $1 million and more. But weve not stopped, wanting to be sure everyone caring about the Museum has achance to join in. To date, we have more than 4,000 gifts. Gifts are still coming in, and I would expect thatflow to continue right until the day the new building opens.
I spoke of records at the start of these remarks. There is one that Im absolutely certain of. It is a fact thatseems to me speaks to the wonders of this exercise as much as does the unprecedented amount raised. The totalcost of raising that $200 million-plus is just $1.85 million, a figure that includes the cost of the dedicatedstaff, the printed materials, and a few events. Need I note that the cost is less than one per cent of the amountraised? This fact symbolizes better than almost anything else the commitment of this community to makingthis Museum an ever more wonderful place.
