January 2012

Happy New YearAs my hard working staff and I gear up for the 2012 session we want to hear from you! As I prepare to be your voice in the legislature, please let us know your suggestions, thoughts, and feedback from last year and moving forward into 2012. Let me know what I can do for you. Ideas for bills? Send them my way! With the 2011 session behind us and funding in place, we are able to move forward on the Niu Valley boulder removal, Aina Haina rock fall mitigation, repaving of Kalanianaole Highway, and greatly needed improvements to our public schools. Thank you for allowing me to serve you and it is truly an honor to represent you at the Legislature. I humbly ask for your continued support and assistance as we work together to make our community a better place to live.

Aina Haina Elementary Gets Needed UpgradesFunds for Aina Haina Elementary School construction projects are scheduled to be released in mid-February. 2012 plans call for:1. Construction of a new fence behind the school. 2. Paving of the gravel parking area at the entrance to the school. 3. Installation of a school wide wireless system.

Niu Valley BoulderIt was a year long effort, but we finally got the Niu Valley boulder removed! It all started whenresidents brought it to my attention over a year ago. The boulder has plagued 28 area residents since 2008. The removal was a joint effort involving the Attorney General, Civil Defense, Department of Land and Natural Resources, Governor Abercrombie, and the Legislature. Last but not least, credit must go to the residents of Haleola Street for bringing this issue to my attention and for evacuating their homes on very short notice. Mahalo!!

Mahalo,

Aina Haina Rock Fall Mitigation to Start[Continued from page 1]

Aina Haina rock fall mitigation is scheduled to start in early 2012 on Ahuwale Place. Residents may experience helicopter and construction noise. The contract period is 210 days but actual work should take approximately 23 months. The contractor plans to have their crew park off site and car-pool in. On average there may be few construction vehicles parked at the site.

Streamlining ProcessesJust saying NO to taxes does not solve the States underlying budgetary problems. In my effort to figure out ways to protect Hawaii families from new taxes, I will be introducing bills that will streamline processes and will save local businesses and the state money.

Centralizing CollectionsI have learned that nobody truly knows how much is money is owed to the State of Hawaii. Presently it is up to each individual department to collect their unpaid debts or judgments. Some unpaid debts are in the millions of dollars, while others have been on the books for over 20 years. I will introduce a bill to require all state departments to refer all unpaid claims over 90 days to the Civil Recoveries Department of the Attorney General.

Continued Education for VeterinariansHawaii is one of the few states that does not require continuing education for veterinarians. I have been working with Dr. Eric Ako, the Executive V.P. of Hawaii Veterinary Medical Association and many others to establish new license renewal requirements.

We want to hear from YouThese are just a few of the bills we will be introducing next session. If you have an issue that needs to be addressed please contact our office.

APEC Opens New DoorsDuring the 2011 Legislative session, I introduced a resolution to establish a sister-state relationship with Lima, Peru. My intention was to expose Hawaii businesses to the growing opportunity in South America. Tourism is the most rapidly growing industry in Peru, growing annually at a rate of 25% over the past five years. While here for APEC, I assisted Jose Luis Silva Martinot (left), the Minister of Foreign Trade and Tourism for Peru with meetings with Hawaii experts to discuss ways to manage Perus phenomenal growth.
