What We Did Next is a new group producing great musical theatre for and by the community of Liverpool. It sprang up in the summer of 2008 from the realisation that the central Liverpool community had no focus to gather around in order to put on great musicals, whilst having a rehearsal schedule that fits around people’s busy lives and also aiming to provide a vibrant social scene.

We know that a lot of people love being connected to the stage in whatever way possible and think this love provides the perfect excuse to socialise with like minded people. With this in mind we aim to produce musicals that our members want to perform, theatre that gets people interested, involved and thinking.

Most of us have been involved in amateur theatre before and we’ve all enjoyed our many and varied experiences. But after a while everyone gets that feeling, that the time has come to take some ownership of what we exhibit on stage, make it our own, make it a success.

It’s time to take a good look back on all we’ve learnt in the past, get together with exciting new friends, and leap forward into performing spectacular shows. This is What We Did Next

RENT is a rock opera with music and lyrics by Jonathan Larson based on Giacomo Puccini’s opera, La Boheme. It follows the lives of a group of impoverished young artists and musicians struggling to survive and create in New York’s Lower East Side in the thriving days of Bohemian Alphabet City, under the shadow of AIDS. This unforgettable story of people learning to survive, falling in love, finding their voices and living for today was first seen in a sold out, limited three-week run at the New York Theatre Workshop in 1994, officially opening at the same off-Broadway theatre on January 25, 1996. Tragically, the show’s creator, Jonathan Larson died suddenly the night before the off-Broadway premiere. Moving to Broadway’s Nederlander Theatre, on April 29, 1996, the musical played its final performance there on September 7, 2008 after playing 5,124 performances and 16 previews, making RENT the seventh longest running show in Broadway history, having grossed over $280 million during its run. Over the course of its groundbreaking 12-year New York run, RENT transformed the definition of musical theatre, altering the modern generation’s perception of the stage, and changing Broadway forever.

Andy is the Treasurer for WWDN, a position he has held since the company’s founding. He helped to form the group after spending three years heavily involved with Liverpool Uni Student Theatre. Originally from Gloucester, Andy moved up to study at the University of Liverpool. Upon graduation he stayed in the city, finding work with Sony Computer Entertainment and continuing his endeavours with WWDN and LUST.

Despite appearing in musicals from an early age, RENT marks Sarah’s debut as Producer. After graduating, she hopes to pursue a career in musical theatre production: think Broadway *cue jazz hands*... Andrew (or AB as he is known to most) is currently living three lives being director, a Photographer as well as working for Liverpool University raising aspirations of primary school children. Although he has missed acting he has thoroughly enjoyed his role of directing and the creative challenge it has presented. Robert graduated from the University of Liverpool in 2006 majoring in Orchestration, Composition for Film and Performance. Upon graduating he worked as an orchestra musician aboard Celebrity and Royal Caribbean cruiselines in the Caribbean and Alaska before returning to Liverpool working freelance as an arranger, performer, composer and teacher. Robert is a founder member of What We Did Next and is extremely pleased with the current cast, encompassing the community, graduates and various Liverpool theatre schools, this is undoubtedly the most talented cast he has had the pleasure to work with.

Zoë has enjoyed the challenge of choreographing this production of ‘Rent.’ Zoë has always had a keen interest in theatre, going to her first dance lesson at the age of two. She performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre, London, twice during her teens and was part of a professional dance show in Cyprus at the age of 18. Before graduating from the University of Liverpool with an MA in 2009, Zoë was an active member of the University’s theatre society, becoming involved in a number of shows on and off stage. She was also President of the society in 2008/9.

It is always difficult to try and mould originality into a well-known show, but when you have a show with such a hard-core cult following such as Rent, it gets a lot harder. What ad-libs, so entrenched in the mind, are kept? Do we dare have the characters looking different when they are so often portrayed as close replicas to the original Broadway Cast? I have tried to keep a nice balance of new and old, familiar and challenging. I trust that any innovations that we have implemented only enhance the show.Enjoy the show.

Felix Hagan is best known for his role as the beard-wearing, posh singer from seminal musical group Rocketeer. He arrived in Liverpool three years ago with a beard on his face and a twinkle in his eye. He went on to star in everything. Well done, Felix.

Unfortunately Felix and the Beard have parted due to creative differences. While the beard has gone on to pursue its film career, Felix has remained committed to the noble cause of musical theatre. He’s a rapper too, you know. And a bloody good one.

After starting Musical Theatre classes at the late age of 11, Jason had found the passion for dance that lead to a career. Training at the CHB School of Performing Arts, Walsall, after many years of classes Jason was awarded the Title, of “All England Male Dance Champion in 2007/08”. After getting a place at LIPA Jason soon saw that there was more to the arts than Musical theatre and his love and passion for the industry grew. He has gained experience dancing with ‘House of Suarez’ at high profile events such as, Leap 2010, Brouhaha 2009.

After directing Company last year Jamie is very pleased to be performing once more. He is immensely proud of how far What We Did Next has come since its first sparks of life over a good few beers in the summer of 2008. Producing high quality shows with a talented cast and crew of friends is an enjoyable distraction from working as a doctor at the Royal Liverpool University Hospital and he hopes the distractions continue in the future. After moving half way across the world, Dani is a first year Song Diploma student at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts. Dani grew up in Singapore and attended the United World College of South East Asia, which explains her strange accent! As a musician, she has always loved the theatre and being part of shows, like RENT, where she has the chance to work with an amazing cast and finally play her dream role of Mimi!

Laura-Jean (L-J) is a third year zoology student at the University of Liverpool, and has absolutely loved playing Joanne and releasing her inner lesbian lawyer, although it has been odd for her to flirt with someone shorter than her! She has spent much of the rehearsal period being the abused by the rest of the cast, particularly a certain Mr Jason Guest (aka. Angel). Despite this L-J has loved every second of this show, and has no idea what she is going to do when it’s all over. Cry probably.

Gabrielle is currently training at The Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts. She has appeared as Lavonne and Winnie for three runs in the West End production, Whistle Down The Wind at Aldwych theatre. As part of the Really Useful Theatre Company she has appeared in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang at The London Palladium and also appeared as part of the cast in a performance at CBBC Proms in the Park. She also performed at Her Majesty’s Theatre in a major role in Star Efx and at Sadlers Wells in London as Dorothy in their own production of Wizard Of Oz. Gabrielle has performed several times for BBC’s Children in Need touring across the UK also more recently in Wembley in their ‘Make A Space’ campaign.

Television credits include an appearance on Fox Kids, the only role in Nickelodeon’s Get Up and Shake advert and between 2001 and 2002 she appeared several times as a regular on Grange Hill. Choir member in the film Notes On a Scandal and in the BBC movie Coming Down the Mountain.

Since moving to Liverpool in 1999 Shaun has performed in numerous productions as part of the University of Liverpool Student Theatre in both supporting and lead roles. Shaun has also been involvedin producing promotional material and marketing for numerous shows including this one.

Rent opens on Christmas Eve at Mark and Roger’s freezing apartment. Mark is filming a documentary, and Roger’s dream is to write one great song. Collins rings the doorbell, but before he is let in, two thugs mug him. Benny, their landlord, calls, asking when they will be paying him rent and threatening he will evict them.

Angel appears on the street and offers to help Collins. When the two discover that they both have AIDS, they decide to go together to a support group meeting. Upstairs, Roger declares that he has wasted opportunities in the past and is determined to write one good song. Mimi enters, shivering, with a candle. There is mutual attraction, but Roger is hesitant to flirt.

Collins introduces Angel to Mark and Roger. Angel is dressed up in Santa drag and clutching twenty-dollar bills in each hand. Benny arrives and tries to bribe Roger and Mark, insisting that he will help their careers if they can get Maureen to stop her planned protest. Later, Mark and Joanne sympathize with each other for loving someone who is too egocentric to return their affections. When Mimi returns to Roger’s apartment, he tells her that if she’s looking for romance, she should come back another day. Angel and Collins pledge their love for each other. Maureen enacts a protest performance, criticizing Benny, who, she claims, has abandoned his principles.

In a restaurant after the protest, Benny insists that the bohemian lifestyle that they have all been living is dead. The company sings “La Vie Bohème,” an anthem to that lifestyle. Roger has been ignoring Mimi all night. When Mimi asks whether she has done something wrong, Roger apologizes, explaining that he has baggage. Maureen’s performance triggers a riot, which Mark captures on film as Mimi and Roger embrace.

Act 1

Act 2On New Year’s Eve, Mimi announces that she is going to get off drugs and go back to school. Later that night, Maureen tries to persuade Joanne, who has broken off their relationship, to come back. That same night, after seeing some of the footage of the riot, a representative from a television newsmagazine leaves a message on Mark’s answering machine, offering him a job. He says that the show is “so sleazy” but considers the offer anyway.

Benny apologises for locking them out of the building. The main characters conclude that friendship depends on love and trust and on “not denying emotion,” and Mimi and Roger embrace. When Roger goes back into his apartment, Mimi’s dealer appears on the street and hands her a bag of heroin.

By Valentine’s Day, Roger and Mimi have been living together for two months, and Maureen and Joanne are back together. When Joanne accuses Maureen of flirting with another woman, Maureen insists that Joanne take her as she is. The two argue and decide they will split up once again. That spring, Roger determines to break off his relationship with Mimi and go to Santa Fe to write his one great song before he dies of AIDS. In the fall, Angel dies, and the cast mourns his death.

On Halloween, Mark meets the producer for the TV newsmagazine, after he has signed a contract to work for them. He is conflicted about his new job, admitting that he has sold out to corporate America. After Angel’s memorial service that day, Roger tells Mimi that he is leaving for Santa Fe. Later, Mimi and Joanne discuss their troubled relationships, and each wishes that she had someone who would truly love her for who she is. In the next scene Mark quits his job and plans to finish his film.

On Christmas Eve, Roger returns, declaring that he has written his song at last. Maureen and Joanne appear in the apartment, carrying Mimi, who is dying of AIDS. As Roger begins to play his song, “Your Eyes,” which Mimi inspired, her fever breaks, and the two declare their love for each other.

Way back in 2002 leaving high school, John’s yearbook entry quoted the following Rent lyric, “There’s only us, there’s only this. Forget regret, or life is yours to miss. No other road, no other way. No day but today.” and now John is so honoured to be part of this spectacular production of that very show. This show marks the end of eight years of musical theatre in Liverpool (with a brief stint in Oxford), as John leaves for new horizons in London. Above all else, the greatest reward of these years has been making such fantastic friends through musical theatre, and John thanks God for getting him involved with performing in the first place. Liz is making her début appearance for WWDN, and indeed her first appearance in a musical.

Hailing from Southport, Liz is a veteran of Liverpool University Drama Society, directing the greatly successful WIT andappearing in a great number of other productions, including Under Milk Wood, Measure for Measure and FESTEN [the celebration].

Having completed her degree in Medicine at Liverpool University in 2009, Liz is now managing to fit What We Did Next into her busy schedule as a Doctor at Southport and Ormksirk hospital.

Very big musical geek, with RENT being the first musical that got him interested in musical theatre. Mark is thrilled to be involved in this production. Back home Mark was a member of the local theatre group, appearing in shows such as; Tommy – the musical, Wizard of Oz, West Side Story and A Chorus Line. Since being at university studying Mathematics, Mark has done two shows with the LUST (Liverpool University Student Theatre), The Wedding Singer and Grease.

Natalie has always loved musical theatre, and jumped at the opportunity to perform; aged three she sneaked away from her mum in a shopping centre and performed “Perfect Nanny” from Mary Poppins. Since then she has taken part in school musicals and amateur shows. This year she moved to Liverpool to study at Liverpool Theatre School, and wanting to continue shows alongside training, Rent was too good an opportunity to miss. It’s been a fantastic experience and rehearsals have become a highlight of her week, she’s had so much fun, befriended some amazing people and looks forward to a WWDN future!

Born into the Key Family there was very little chance I would not love Musical Theatre; one of my earliest memories was a starring role as Gretl Von Trapp on a kitchen table in France. Throughout school and later University I have thoroughly enjoyed every moment on the stage, with many thanks to Mrs Hackney who put me up there in the first place. LUST and What We Did Next have been a dream come true for a professional amateur like me, I have loved every second, so thank you AB, God, Sarah, Rob and Zoë for letting me take part; you have made this year one I will never forget.

Northern Irish lass Sarah is currently reading History at the University of Liverpool. She is making her début appearance for What We Did Next, having previously enjoyed performing in Liverpool University Student Theatre’s production of Jekyll and Hyde.

Sarah is lucky to have made it back in time for the show due to recent volcanic activity, and is now looking to put on an explosive performance on the stage!

Callum is currently on a 1 year Performing Arts course at the Liverpool Institute for Performing arts and hopefully will be moving on to study a musical theatre BA in London next year. This will mark Callum’s first appearance for WWDN and he has enjoyed every minute of it.

Steph began performing with Thornbury Musical Theatre Group at the age of five. With this society she has performed in numerous pantomimes, musicals and variety shows. At the age of eleven she joined the Northavon Youth Theatre Company, with whom she acted in chorus roles in several musicals. Until the age of 16 when she took the role of Darcy in the company’s rosebowl winning production of “The Boyfriend”. The following year, Steph performed the role of adult Cosette in “Les Miserables” with the same company. Since leaving Bristol to undertake her nursing degree at Liverpool University, Steph has performed with LUST in several productions including Cinderella, Beauty and the Beast and i love you, you’re perfect, now change. Steph is also a founding member of WWDN, performing as Kathy in last years production of Stephen Sondheim’s company.

Kate grew up on musicals and enjoyed getting involved in high school drama before joining Newcastle University’s Gilbert and Sullivan Society. She then moved to Liverpool in 2004 to study medicine and became a part of Artefacts, performing in the annual “medics’ play”. Kate was quite distressed at the idea of the end of university life being the end of her dramatic outlet and was therefore delighted to be an inaugural member of What We Did Next. She is currently working as a doctor in Arrowe Park Hospital and, although planning to work abroad for a year, looking forward to rejoining WWDN on her return.

Father to be Matt is back and this time it’s not personal in the slightest. Since announcing his move to Burnley Matt has had to endure the trials and tribulations of a commuting thesp. Life in theatre has been wonderful for Matt and he thanks and loves all he has met and the people close to him have been both a comfort and an inspiration. With this in mind he would like to announce his retirement from the stage at least until the bump can toddle. Thanks again and break a leg everyone.

Andy is a science teacher who hails from Birkenhead (pronounced “Birkhhen-ed”). He has been involved in musical theatre since the age of 8 and is very proud to make his WWDN debut in Rent. He has been in far far too many musicals to count....ok it wasn’t that hard it’s 27 but that’s still quite a lot!
