Pohl Positioni am extremely happy to say that 2011 was Komptech usa’s best year in its five year history. We doubled our revenues over 2010 and had a great start going into 2012.
The goal for 2012 - apart from continuing growth - is to add more resources to our service and parts team. after all, the more machines we sell and the more users we have, the more support we need to provide.
We’ve noticed that customers have been a lot more confident since the second quarter of 2011, and the numbers for the us economy back it up. customers are once again investing in growing their businesses. actually, many of them were ready to invest before now, but banks were reluctant to lend money. Financing has become more available in the last six to nine months. Banks have changed their approach and are now actively looking for customers with sound financials.
a rising tide lifts all boats. clearly the industry as a whole is doing better than in the years before, but Komptech usa has also made great progress above and beyond that, and is gaining more market share. Our investments of the last few years are paying off.
I want to thank everybody, especially our dealers, who helped us to be so successful. We are looking forward to the future!

The beginning of 2011 saw the introduction of the cribus series trommel screens to the Komptech product line in the us. To mark the occasion, we launched our biggest promotion to date. Komptech, a company that is all about green, was going to give customers something orange – any customer who purchased a cribus trommel before July 1, 2011 would receive a KTm 250 motorcycle.

machine when they learned about the new cribus 3800. The advantages of its larger screening area, hybrid dual power, lower fuel consumption, as well as the new “Wheel Grip” system that eliminates drive chains, prompted chris carey to take a closer look. after seeing the 3800 perform, the decision was an easy one.
it was only after chris purchased the trommel that he learned he would also be getting a new KTm motorcycle. chris races road bikes, but not dirt bikes, so decided to give the bike to his Operations manager Drew meylan. Drew has raced and ridden dirt bikes for years, and his son

After many major hurricanes, millions of tons of woody debris are exported from the US to Europe for use in energy generation.
on may 22, 2011 Joplin mo was hit by a devastating Category F 5 tornado that cut a mile-wide swath through town. Cleanup is the first step towards recovery in any storm disaster, and from mid-July to mid-August the Cs Carey company of Kansas City Ks was among the contractors helping clean up and shred the debris.
surprising performanceWhen Cs Carey showed up with a 600 HP, low-speed, high-torque Komptech Crambo shredder, the other operators with their 1000 HP high-speed grinders laughed. What are 600 HP compared to 1000 HP? But pretty soon the teasing turned into admiration as the Crambo proved what it could do, hour after hour, day after day. Due to the far lower incidence of stoppages, downtime and lower maintenance on the wear parts, at the end of the day the Crambo had a higher output than machines with almost twice the horsepower on paper.
The uptime secretThe secret is the Crambo’s low speed. When it hits a contrary like a rock or large metal item, it stops gently instead of crashing to a halt like a high-speed
shredder does. Damage is nonexistent or only minor – a tooth might need to be switched out, that’s all, and pretty soon the Crambo is up and shredding again. There are fewer stoppages, and the ones that do happen take less time to fix. According to operator Drew Meylan, the three high-speed grinders on the site each had about 2 hours downtime per 8 hours of operation, whereas the Crambo put in a steady 10-12 hours a day. It clocked 100 hours during the first 9 days of the job, and completed the entire 350-hours job with just one set of teeth.
The input on this job was vegetative debris – trees, limbs, and stumps – and construction debris. like in any storm cleanup, the priority was on getting it out of the way so rebuilding could start, so the debris arrived at the grinding site more or less as it was picked up. In that situation, the Crambo’s flexibility was a big plus – according to Drew, “you can just put anything in it.” everyone was also impressed by how well it dealt with stumps.
Designed around torqueCs Carey also found the Crambo’s low fuel consumption to be another asset.
Drew noted that “the machine is designed around the engine’s torque, not the horsepower, and it’s not running wide-open all the time.” He added that while 1000 HP high-speed grinders usually use 35-50 gallons per hour, the Crambo runs at about 15 gallons per hour. on the Joplin job, they could run it all day on single tank of fuel, so there was no need to stop for refueling during the day.
The output on the Joplin job was coarse, as it typically is for storm jobs. Cs Carey used a 9” screen. About half of the output went to a mulch company, and the rest went to landfill or to intermediate tips.
Normally, Cs Carey uses the Crambo for shingle grinding with a 4” screen. Here again the flexibility is a huge plus – according to Drew, “if we have a pile of wood we can just run it without changing anything.”
overall Cs Carey is very happy with the Crambo – it might seem low-powered on paper, but it has gone head-to-head with bigger grinders, and come out shining.

Not what you’d thinksay “sioux reservation” and most people will see in their mind’s eye a dry, windswept scene somewhere in the Dakotas.Almost nobody will think of a prosperous suburban community in minnesota that is a thriving part of the local economy and even provides vital services for neighboring towns, while leading the way in environmental sustainability.Yet that is an apt description of the shakopee mdewakanton sioux (Dakota) Community (smsC). This federally recognized Indian tribe near minneapolis breaks the mold.
committed to sustainabilitysustainability is a major commitment, and the tribe recycles food oil into biodiesel fuel, operates a wind turbine and clean energy plant, does extensive land restoration and protection, and operates the smsC organic Recycling Facility, a recycling and composting plant that serves the tribe as well as surrounding towns. Recently, this facility invested in three Komptech machines – a Topturn X67 compost turner, a Crambo 5000 HD shredder, and a multistar l3 star screener.
composting with KomptechAccording to mike Whitt of the smsC organic Recycling Facility, the decision for Komptech was driven in large part by speed – or rather, the lack thereof. The Komptech Topturn operates at less than 200 rpm, vs. 800 rpm for many competing models. In mike’s view, high-speed turners damage the microbes in the compost and reduce valuable and much needed bulking agents. microbes need bulking agents to compost faster, and when they are damaged, the rotting process slows down while the microbe colonies reestablish themselves. This is not compatible with the tribe’s sustainability approach, and with

the Topturn, it doesn’t happen – the compost is turned and aerated without damage. After checking out several models, mike also determined that the Topturn is better at mixing the entire windrow, not just the bottom. He also values its lateral conveying ability, unique in its large size class.
The Crambo is a low-speed shredder, and here again the smsC organic Recycling Facility sees this as a benefit. The plant takes in waste from many sources, and a low-speed shredder can better handle the contaminants that are unavoidable.
The way to goThe decision to go with a european brand was not taken lightly, and at first there was some reluctance due to concerns about service and parts. Komptech addressed the parts issue by providing parts on consignment, so they are immediately available when necessary. In regards to service,

once these issues had been addressed, according to mike the decision was easy, since Komptech is the only manufacturer with all the machines the tribe was looking for – star screens, low-speed turners and low-speed shredders. As he put it, “We did our homework, looked at the others, and are convinced this is the way to go.”

communities for free, as part of the tribe’s “Good Neighbor” policy. It is the first turned windrow operation in minnesota, and handles residential and commercial green waste, as well as increasing amounts of food residuals. mike Whitt adds that the facility has “lots of future plans” – no surprise with a community as forward-looking as the shakopee mdewakanton sioux. Komptech is proud to be a part of it.

Composting with air (aerobic) is fast and safe, but requires management and machinery to turn piles and windrows. Composting without air (anaerobic) takes many times longer, and generates harmful compounds like ammonia and methane, a major greenhouse gas. This is what happens when organic waste is landfilled.
TuRNiNG WiTH THe TimesIt’s been getting harder to obtain permits for new landfill sites everywhere, and the City of edmonton in Alberta, Canada is no exception. After trying for 13 years to get regulatory approval for a new site, the city finally turned to composting and residential recycling on a major scale, building a large mechanical plant for composting mixed residential msW and biosolids. However, a serious capacity constraint was the limited outdoor area for curing the output from the plant, in conjunction with additional outdoor composting of biosolids and wood chips. A number of years ago, to maximize the use of the available space, all outdoor curing was converted from windrows to mass beds. While this worked well for the biosolids and wood chip material, there were problems with the curing of the msW compost. Processing in the mechanical plant involves a number of separation steps which narrow the particle size range of the compost coming out for curing.
Porosity was thus a concern for this material in mass beds, and analysis of the data showed that shorter curing times could be achieved in windrows.
As part of its move back to windrows for curing msW compost, the City purchased a Komptech Topturn X67 windrow turner. one of the main reasons for going with the X67 over the competition was the fact that the windrows could overlap by a foot, thus maximizing the amount of compost that could be placed on the pad. With the Topturn’s ability to turn large 21 foot wide by 10 foot tall windrows, the City could also continue to handle large amounts of material on the confined site. Facilities manager Allan Yee said “We were also pleasantly surprised with how well and fast the machine mixes different feedstocks and materials in some of our final compost products. Whereas previously we used trommel screeners for blending, now we tend to rely on the turner for this.
The high throughput of the X67 also gives us the capability to turn all of our windrows in short order.” The City currently composts 250,000 metric tons per year of green waste, bio-solids, msW, food waste and wood waste. Through focused expansion efforts in mRF, C&D recycling, and most recently e-waste recycling, the City has achieved a 65% waste diversion rate while extending its remaining landfill life by 12 years. The next steps are RDF, gasification and biofuels facilities, all currently under construction, and the City hopes these will result in a landfill diversion rate at the 90% level in the coming years.

The US Government sees woody biomass as one way to reduce dependence on foreign oil, as well as create jobs in rural areas. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007 (U.S. DOE, 2007) provide several incentives that apply to woody biomass.
Reliable Wood Products of Jersey city, NJ is the largest processor and wholesaler of mulch, topsoil and compost products in the New york Tri-state area. With 11 different locations, the company recycles waste wood, leaves, and yard waste from some 40 area municipalities into compost.
Recently, Reliable Wood Products purchased a Komptech multistar XXL star screener after a thorough demo period, and has found it a real money saver.
The purchase decision was driven first and foremost by production volume. At some 630 yards an hour, the Multistar XXL can do what it took three of Reliable’s older screeners to do with their 200 yards/hour. The XXL does it with remarkably low fuel consumption, too. The company soon found added savings – in addition to divesting its older
screeners, it could also dispense with the loaders it had been using with them.
With its 11 composting sites, Reliable has found the multistar’s road mobility to be a huge asset. The transport dimensions are road legal without special permitting, and Operations manager Keith Barton noted that the machine can be up and running 15 minutes after arriving at a site, and it takes just 15 more minutes to prep it for the move to the next site. He said that “the ability to be screening at another site in only an hour all-in gives us great versatility.”
according to Keith, the multistar XXL was a big investment for a screener, but it is paying off by cutting equipment and hourly costs. “Overall the savings were pretty major for us.”
This is the second Komptech machine for Reliable Wood Products, the first being a Topturn X60 compost turner they took delivery of in 2011, so Keith had already gained confidence in Komptech’s service. “They obviously want to make the customer happy,” he said, adding that “after a sale, lots of companies don’t want to see you until they try to sell you something else, but Komptech definitely stands behind their equipment.” With the multistar XXL, Reliable also had some custom modification requests, which Komptech implemented.
Overall, Reliable Wood Products is very happy with their new Multistar XXL, in terms of both performance and service. Keith is also impressed with the features of it and the Topturn, and said, “Komptech’s investment in R&D shows.” Needless to say, at Komptech that’s what we like to hear!

as high-quality and low-maintenance as our machines are, even they need service from time to time. We understand that downtime means lost profits for our customers, so expert service delivered as fast as possible is a priority. Service is provided by Komptech Service Advisors, dealer technicians as well as through training our customer’s onsite personnel.
We’re serious about having the best service in the industry, and only factory-trained technicians are allowed to display our logo. if a truck shows up with the Komptech logo, you can be sure that the driver is a qualified technician who knows his way around our machines.
Komptech is never far away! Our customers often work in remote locations where the closest service advisor can seem a million miles away, so we offer direct Gsm or laN connections to almost all machines. This allows factory technicians to call the machine anywhere in the world. Most problems can be resolved remotely this way.
Our commitment to service is extended to our customers every time we deliver a machine. A factory-trained technician is on site at each delivery to provide training to the customer and their staff. For three to four days, the customer learns the proper operating, maintenance, troubleshooting and servicing procedures, as well as who their service contact is and the procedure for ordering parts or handling warranty issues. all of this helps establish a good working relationship between the customer and our service representatives.
We also offer continued training and education for our dealers and customers to update them on the latest technology. each year, Komptech holds Sales and Service Training events to keep dealers and service advisors at peak performance. This is also a valuable resource for us,
because feedback from customers, dealers, service advisors and our own employees helps us make our machines better.
in 2011 Komptech hosted a three-day service training in Northern California, divided between classroom sessions and hands-on field training. Three machines were the main focus of the training - the Topturn X67, Multistar l3 and the crambo 5000 low-speed, high-torque shredder. In the field training, machines were purposely set with faults and the technicians were required to diagnose and repair the problems. These machines processed material under “live” working conditions for maximum realism. Classroom time was devoted to programming, electrical schematics, troubleshooting and feedback. Komptech also gives customers and dealers the opportunity to attend service trainings offered at our different sites in Europe. Several times per year, each factory or competence center offers basic and advanced service training on different types of machines and specialties. Thus, for example, a dealer can have his service

Service is just one side to great customer support. it also takes a knowledgeable parts team to get the correct parts to the customers’ site quickly when needed. We offer four levels of parts support. Because Komptech uses top quality industry-standard parts, most can be found locally. if not, the local dealer stocks our recommended parts inventory for every machine in their territory. in addition, Komptech usa has a full parts warehouse in Denver, CO to back up the dealers. On the rare occasions that a part is not available in these three levels, Komptech can ship the part from the factory directly to the customer, usually within 3 days.
