The Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) is an independent, humanitarian, non-profit, non-governmental organization providing assistance, protection and durable solutions to

refugees and internally displaced persons worldwide.

NRC promotes and protects the rights of refugees and people who have been displaced within their own country. We take

action during situations of armed conflict, and engage in other contexts where our competences will add value.

Energy Scenario in Jordan

• Jordan has very limited primary energy resource

• Well over 90% (up to 97%) of energy needs met by imports from neighbouring countries

• Due to economic growth and increasing population (including due to Syrian refugees seeking shelter), energy demand is expected to rise by >50% over next 20 year

• Energy Sector also by far largest source of GHG

JORDAN Response Plan 2015

• Plan led by the government that tries to coordinate all the actors and activities in dealing with Syrian refugee crisis

• The JRP 2015 adopts a resilience-based approach to respond to and mitigate the effects of the Syria crisis on Jordan and Jordanian host communities.

• Jordan Response Plan (JRP) 2015 also highlights the importance of renewable energy and energy efficiency

• JRP Overall Objective in the Energy Sector: “to scale up and accelerate responses to Jordan’s energy crisis in a sustainable manner that alleviates incremental demand pressures from the Syrian crisis”.

NRC Renewable Energy Pilots

• Promote Renewable Energy through small scale pilots / demonstration projects

• Includes Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and Solar Thermal systems

• Planned for Irbid and Jerash Governorates

• Solar PV systems in public schools

• Solar Thermal pilots for refugee households

• Activities will be carried out in coordination with MEMR and Ministry of Education, and is supported by the EU.

Solar PV Systems

• Pilot PV systems will be installed in schools in coordination with the MoE, the DoEs and the individual schools

• Schools will be selected based on various criteria including current energy consumption and overcrowding due to refugee children

• Schools will be able to minimise or eliminate their electricity bills

• The installations will work as pilots and demonstration projects for awareness raising

Solar Thermal Systems

• Solar Thermal systems are common in Jordan and have been in use for a very long time

• Solar Thermal systems for hot water will be installed in houses as part of the NRC Integrated Shelter Programme

• Beneficial to both the local housing sector (Landlords) and refugees

Environmental Integration & Sustainability

• Promoting integration of environment into programming is one of the key objectives of the project

• Case studies to show how national and international actors can work towards achieving sustainable energy solutions by good programming

• Events and workshops will be held to share experience and lessons learnt
