Renee Kremhelmer B.A. Psychology, 2011

Personal Statement

As an individual with a mother diagnosed with bipolar disorder I have been raised surrounded by professionals within the field as well as experienced the roller-coaster that mental illness can often derive. Assisting my mother, now as an adult, through her disorder and being involved in her treatment and care grants me insight into the challenges and feelings individuals suffering from mental illness encounter. As a daughter of a bipolar woman I understand the effects this disorder can have on others within the family. As a developing student of the field I am beginning to understand how the theories and practices of therapy can assist individuals experiencing these challenges.

Learning to apply those theories and practices is the next step in my journey. The achievement of a Master’s degree as well as a Psy.D. will be the method to achieving that step in my journey. The lessons which will be garnered along this journey are the parts I am looking forward to most. Onward and upward!
