    METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are: Seat belt pretensioners.

    Force limiter.

    Air bags for driver andpassenger

    These systems are provided to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.There are three possibilities,depending on the force of theimpact:- protection is provided by the beltonly;

    - the pretensioner is triggered torectify belt position and take upplay in the belt;

    - the air bag and the force limiter arealso triggered when there aresevere impacts.

    Side air bags are provided toactivate in the event of severeside impacts.

    Front seat belt pretensionersThe system waits a few secondsafter the ignition has been switchedon before being operational.In the event of a significant frontalimpact, a computer triggers the seatbelt buckle pretensioner igniter, andsets a piston 1 in motion. Thispiston immediately retracts the seatbelt buckle, pulling the seat beltagainst the body and therebyimproving its efficiency.

    Have the entire restraintsystem checked followingan accident.

    No work whatsoever may beperformed on the pretensionersystem (computer, wiring, etc.).

    Only qualified RENAULTNetwork personnel may work onthe pretensioner system toprevent incorrect triggering ofthe system which may causeinjury.

    The electric trigger system mayonly be tested by a speciallytrained technician using specialequipment.

    When scrapping your car, contactyour RENAULT Dealer fordisposal of the gas generator.

    METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)Force limiterAbove a certain severity of impact,this mechanism is used to limit theforce of the belt against the body sothat it is at an acceptable level.

    Warning concerning theservice life of the airbagsThe pyrotechnic systemsin airbags and

    pretensioners have a limitedservice life.Refer to the servicing booklet foryour vehicle for replacementfrequency.

    Airbags for driver andpassengerThese may be provided for thedriver and the front passenger seats.The presence of this equipment isindicated by the words Airbag onthe steering wheel and thedashboard, and a label on the baseof the windscreen or on the sunvisor.

    Each airbag system consists of:- an airbag and gas generator fittedon the steering wheel for thedriver and in the dashboard for thefront passenger.

    - a computer for both systems,which includes the impact sensorand a monitor controlling theelectrical trigger system for the gasgenerator.

    - a single warning light on

    1.15

    METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)OperationThe system waits a few secondsafter the ignition has been switchedon before being operational.If a severe frontal impact occurs,the airbag(s) inflate(s) rapidly,cushioning the impact of thedriver's head and chest against thesteering wheel and the frontpassenger's head against thedashboard. The airbag then deflatesimmediately so that the passengersare not impeded in any way whenthey get out of the vehicle.The passenger airbag system has, inaddition to the driver's airbagsystem, a front passenger airbagdeactivation indicator light on theinstrument panel. This warninglight is linked to the passengerairbag deactivation system throughthe ignition key.It lights up to indicate that thepassenger airbag will not be inflatedin the event of an impact (for moreinformation about the operation ofthis system, refer to the Deactivatingthe front passenger airbag section).

    Operating faultsWarning light 1 will light up on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then go out after afew seconds.If it does not light up when theignition is turned on, there is a faultin the system.If it lights up while you are driving,stop at once and switch off theignition.

    If it still lights up after the ignitionhas been switched on again, there isa fault in the system. In this case, arear-facing child seat MUSTNOT befitted to the front passenger seat.We do not recommend fitting anyother kind of passenger seat device.In both cases, consult yourRENAULT Dealer as soon aspossible.The airbag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)All thewarnings below are given so that the air bag is not obstructed in anywaywhen it is inflated and also to prevent therisk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the air bag inflates.

    The air bag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the air bags and seat belts are integralparts of the same protection system. It is therefore essential that the seat belt is worn at all times. If seat belts arenot worn, the occupants are exposed to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. The risk of minorsuperficial injuries occurring when the air bag is deployed may also increase, although such minor injuries are

    always possible with air bags.The air bag does not offer protection against light or moderate frontal impacts, side or rear impacts or if the car turnsover.

    Air bags for driver and passenger No work or modification whatsoever may be performed on any part of the driver and passenger air bag system

    (computer, wiring, etc.) except by qualified RENAULT network personnel.

    To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULT Network personnel may work on the air bag system.

    As a safety precaution, have the air bag system checked if your car has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into.

    When selling or lending the car, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the car.

    When scrapping your car, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

    METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)

    All the warnings below are given sothat the airbag is not obstructed inanywaywhen it is inflated and alsoto prevent the risk of seriousinjuries caused by items whichmaybe dislodged when the airbaginflates.

    Warnings concerning the drivers airbag Do not adjust either the steering wheel or the steering wheel

    cushion.

    Do not cover the steering wheel cushion.

    Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to thesteering wheel cushion.

    The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnelfrom the RENAULT network).

    Do not sit too close to the steering wheel. If you sit with your arms slightlybent (see the information on Adjusting your driving position in Section 1),it will ensure that there is sufficient space for the airbag to inflate properlyand to be fully effective.

    Warnings concerning the passenger airbag: location 1 Do not attach or glue any objects (pins, logo, clock, telephone mounting,

    etc.) to the dashboard in the proximity of the airbag housing.

    Nothing should be placed between the dashboard and the passenger (pet,umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

    The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as thereis a risk that serious injuries may be sustained. As a general rule, keep allparts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

    FITTING A REAR-FACING CHILD SEAT TO THE PASSENGER SEATIS PROHIBITED UNLESS THE METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITIONTO THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT BELT HAVE BEEN DEACTIVATED

    METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTS (continued)Side airbagsThis airbag may be fitted to the frontseats and is deployed at the sides ofthe seats (door side) to protect theoccupants in the event of a severeside impact.Markings on thewindscreen remindyou of the presence of thisequipment.This system will only operate if asevere side impact occurs. It isactivated along with the seat beltpretensioner and the front seat belt.

    Warnings concerning theside airbag Fitting seat covers: seats

    equipped with an airbagrequire special coversspecifically designed for yourcar. Consult your RENAULTDealer to find out if these coversmay be purchased fromRENAULToutlets. The use of anycovers other than those designedfor your car (and including thosedesigned for another car) mayaffect the operation of these airbags and reduce your protection.

    Do not place any accessories,objects or even animals betweenthe seat back and the door. Thismay prevent the airbag fromoperating correctly or causeinjury if the airbag is deployed.

    No work or modificationwhatsoever may be performed onthe seat except by qualifiedRENAULT network personnel.

    The airbag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the airbaginflates, it will generate heat,produce smoke (this does not meanthat a fire is about to start) andmake a noise upon detonation. CHILD SAFETYIn all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraintsystems for children and babies.In Europe, children under 12 yearsof age, less than 1.50 m tall andweighing less than 36 kg(1) must berestrained with an approvedrestraint adapted to the child'sweight and height.The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.Child restraints for which typeapproval was obtained after January1992 offer a level of safety muchgreater than restraints with typeapproval before that date.We therefore advise you to select anapproved child restraint thatcomplies with European regulationECE 44.Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it is anapproved type) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.

    (1) Always comply with the laws of thecountry in which you are travelling.They may be different to theguidelines in this handbook.

    Remember that a collision at30 mph (50 km/h) is the sameas falling from a height of10 metres. Expressed in otherterms, transporting a child withouta restraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on athird-floor balcony which does nothave any railings.

    Under no circumstancesshould babies or childrenbe allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another

    passenger in the car.If a head-on collision occurs at30 mph (50 km/h), the resultingmomentum of a child weighing30 kg (66 lbs) will be the same asthat of a one tonne projectile: youwill find it impossible to hold thechild, even if you yourself arewearing a belt.It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your knee.Never use the belt for more thanone person at the same time.

    The tables on the following pagesinform you of the types of seat thatcan be fitted in each of the vehicleseat positions on the vehicle inaccordance with the Europeandirective.

    Before installing a child seat in thefront seat (if fitting is permitted)If the passenger seat is fitted withone, carry out the followingadjustments:- move the passenger seat as farback as possible;

    - set the seatback to its fully uprightposition;

    - raise the seat squab as far aspossible;

    - raise the headrest to its highestsetting;

    - move the seat belt height controlto the low position.

    Refer to the Child safety equipmentbooklet available from theRENAULT Network to choose theseat suited to your child andrecommended for your vehicle.

    CHILD SAFETY (continued)The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility.To ensure that your child has themaximum possible protection, werecommend that you use seatsapproved by the RENAULTNetwork.If your vehicle is fitted with anIsofix system you should use anIsofix seat (see the Isofix child seatattachment system information inSection 1).Restraint systems for all thecategories are available. Thesesystems have been developedin consultation with themanufacturers and have been testedin RENAULT vehicles.Consult your RENAULT Dealer andask him to help you install it.

    Category 0 and 0+ (from 0 to13 kg)A child's neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. In afront-facing seat there is a risk thatthe child will sustain neck injuriesin the event of a frontal impact.RENAULT therefore recommends arear-facing seat with a harness thatgives all-round protection (figure 1).

    Category 1 (from 9 to 18 kg)Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild's pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using the car's three-point belts are not adequate andthere is a risk that the child willsustain abdominal injuries in theevent of a frontal impact. It istherefore advisable to use rear-facing seats (figure 1), bucket-typeseats (figure 2) or seats withharnesses.

    To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourcar and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide awarranty.

    Category 2 (from 15 to 25 kg)and category 3 (from22 to 36 kg)To correctly restrain the pelvis of achild up to 12 years of age, less than1.50 m tall and weighing less than36 kg, it is preferable to use seatswhich can be combined withthree-point seat belts (figure 3) withstrap guides to ensure that thethree-point seat belt lies flat againstthe child's thighs.

    A booster seat with a height-adjustable seatback and a belt guideare recommended as this will allowthe belt to be worn as close to thebase of the neck as possible but noton it.If a booster seat without a seatbackis used, the vehicle's headrest willhave to be adjusted to suit thechild's stature; the upper edge of theheadrest must be at the same heightas the top of the child's head andshould never be lower than in linewith the child's eyes.

    To faciliate fitting certain typesof child seat, we recommend thatyou remove the head restraintand place it in the luggagecompartment.

    The standard classifies childrestraints in five categories:Category 0: from 0 to 10 kg (0 to 22 lbs)Category 0+: from 0 to 13 kg (0 to 28 lbs)Category 1: from 9 to 18 kg (20 to 40 lbs)Category 2: from15 to 25 kg (33 to 55 lbs)Category 3: from22 to 36 kg (48 to 80 lbs)

    FUEL TANK (continued)Filling with fuelPetrol versionOnly use unleaded petrol.Using leaded petrol will damage theanti-pollution system and may leadto a loss of warranty.To ensure the fuel tank is not filledwith leaded petrol, the fuel tankfiller neck contains a restrictorfitted with a valve which onlyallows the nozzle for unleadedpetrol to be used (at the pump).- Insert the nozzle as far as it will goso as to open the valve.

    - Keep the nozzle in this positionthroughout the entire fillingoperation.

    Filling with fuel (continued)Petrol and diesel versionsNo more than two filling operationsmay be made after the fuel feed hasswitched off automatically for thefirst time because there must besufficient space in the fuel tank toallow for expansion.

    It is strictly forbidden towork on or modify thefuel supply system(computers, wiring, fuel

    circuit, injector, protectivecovers, etc.) in view of thepossible risk to safety (except forqualified personnel from theRENAULT network).

    Persistent fuel odourIf you notice a persistent fuel odouryou should: stop the vehicle if traffic

    conditions allow and switch offthe ignition;

    switch on the hazard warninglights and ask your passengers toleave the vehicle and stay clear ofthe traffic;

    Do not operate on, or restart, thevehicle before it has beeninspected by qualified staff fromthe RENAULT network.

However, it is only after1500 miles (3000 km) have beencovered that you may reasonablyexpect full performance.

    Service intervals: see the vehicle'sservicing booklet.

    Diesel versionFor the first 750miles (1500 km), donot exceed 2500 rpm. Aftercompleting this mileage you maydrive faster, although the car willonly provide top performance afterapproximately 4000 miles(6000 km).During the running in period, donot accelerate hardwhile the engineis still cold and do not let the engineoverrev.

    Service intervals: see the vehicle'sservicing booklet.

    Position St: Stopped and steeringlock appliedTo lock: remove the key and turn thesteering wheel slightly until thesteering lock engages with a click).To unlock: turn the key and thesteering wheel slightly.

    STARTING/STOPPING THE ENGINEStarting the engine In the case of an automatic

    gearboxRefer to the information onautomatic gearboxes in Section 2.

    Special feature on vehiclesequipped with an engineimmobiliser systemIn very cold conditions (temperaturesbelow 20C): so that it is easier tostart the engine, switch on theignition for several seconds beforestarting the engine.Make sure the engine immobiliser isnot activated. Refer to theinformation on the Engineimmobiliser system in Section 1.

    Diesel injectionCold or warm engine- Turn the key to the starterposition, D, without depressingthe accelerator.

    - Release the key as soon as theengine starts.

    Diesel injectionTurn the ignition keyto the ignition on position, M,and hold this position until thepreheating warning light goesout.Turn the key to the starterposition, D, without depressingthe accelerator.Release the key as soon as theengine starts.

    Stopping the engineWith the engine idling, turn the keyback to the stop position.

    If there is a child (or animal) in the vehicle, never leave it unattended with the key in the ignition. With thekey in the ignition he or she could start the engine or operate electrical equipment such as the electricwindows and there is a risk that the child may be injured (by trapping his or her neck, arm, hand, etc.). Risk ofserious injury.

    Never switch off the ignition before the vehicle has stopped completely. Once the vehicle has stopped, the powerassisted steering, brake servo and the passive safety devices such as air bags and pretensioners will no longer operate.When the key has been removed, the steering will lock.

    SPECIAL FEATURES OF PETROL VERSIONSThe following operating conditions: driving for a long time with the

    low fuel level warning lightilluminated;

    using leaded petrol; using lubrication additives or fuel

    not approved by RENAULT;Or operating incidents such as: faulty ignition, running out of

    fuel or spark plug disconnected,causing engine misfiring andjerking when driving;

    loss of power.

    May cause the catalytic converter tooverheat and thus reduce itsefficiency or even destroy it andcause thermal damage to the car.

    If you notice any of the above faults,have the necessary repairs carriedout as soon as possible by yourRENAULT Dealer.

    These faults may be avoided bytaking your vehicle regularly toyour RENAULT Dealer at theintervals specified in your Servicingbooklet.

    Starting problemsTo avoid damaging the catalyticconverter, do not keep trying tostart the engine (using the starter, orby pushing or towing the car)without having identified andcorrected the starting fault.If the fault cannot be identified, donot persist in attempting to start theengine and call a RENAULT Dealer.

    Donot park the car or run theengine in locations wherecombustible substances ormaterials such as grass or

    leaves could come into contactwith ahot exhaust system.

    SPECIAL FEATURES OF DIESEL VERSIONSDiesel engine speedDiesel engines are fitted withinjection equipment incorporating amechanical governor whichprevents overrevving of the engineirrespective of the gear in use.

    Lack of fuelIf the fuel tank has been draineddry, you may start the enginenormally after refilling the fuel tankprovided that the battery is wellcharged.However, if after a few seconds andseveral attempts the engine fails tostart, contact a RENAULT Dealer.

    Precautions to be taken inwinterTo avoid any problems in icyweather: Ensure that battery is always fully

    charged. Always keep the fuel tank

    relatively full to avoid watervapour condensing in it andaccumulating at the bottom of thetank.

    Vehicles equipped with dieselfuel heaterThis equipment enables diesel fuelto be used without an additivedown to 18C or, if the vehicle isused regularly for short journeys(cold engine), down to 5C.

    Do not park the car orrun the engine inlocationswhere combustiblesubstances or materials such

    as grass or leaves could come intocontact with a hot exhaust system.
