The plip remote control 1 locks andunlocks the doors. It is supplied with power by abattery which has to be replacedwhen the battery tell-tale light 2 nolonger comes on. (Refer to theinformation on the radio frequencyremote control batteries.)

If there is a child (oranimal) in the car, neverleave it unattended withthe key in the ignition.

With the key in the ignition itwould be possible to operateelectrical equipment such as thewindow risers and there is a riskthat the child may be seriouslyinjured (by trapping his or herneck, arm, hand, etc.).

Locking/unlocking the doorsPress the remote control forapproximately one second to lock orunlock the doors. (Tell-tale light 2will switch on.)- The hazard warning lights flash

twice to indicate that the doorshave been locked.

Note: Depending on the vehicle, ifeither a door or tailgate is open ornot properly closed or if a rearinterior light remains in the“continuous lighting” position(see information on interior lightsin section 3), the hazard warninglights will not flash.

- The hazard warning lights flashonce to indicate that the doorshave been unlocked.

Note: On certain vehicles, if a dooris not opened within approximately30 seconds of unlocking the doorusing the remote control, the doorswill lock again automatically.

InterferenceInterference may be caused to theoperation of the remote control byfactors in the immediate vicinity(external installations or the use ofequipment operating on the samefrequency as the remote control).

If you lose your keys or needanother set of keys (or a remotecontrol), contact your RENAULTDealer.

• If a remote control unit isreplaced, it will be necessary totake the vehicle to yourRENAULT Dealer because boththe vehicle and all the remotecontrol units are needed toinitialise the system.

• No more than two remote controlscan be used on one vehicle.

• Make sure that the batteries arealways in good condition - theylast for approximately two years.

SEAT BELTSAlways wear your seat belt whentravelling in your car. You must alsocomply with the local legislation inthe particular country you are in.

Before driving off:- First ensure that your driving

position is correct.- Then, to provide maximum

safety, adjust your seat beltcorrectly.

Incorrectly adjusted seatbelts may cause injuriesin the event of anaccident.

Even pregnant women shouldwear a seat belt. In this case, ensure that the pressure of thelap belt on the abdomen is notexcessive.

Adjusting your driving position• Sit with your back firmly against

the seatback. This is essential to ensure yourlumbar vertebrae are in thecorrect position.

• Adjust the distance between theseat and the pedals.Your seat should be as far back aspossible to allow you to press theclutch pedal fully down. Theseatback should be adjusted sothat your arms remain slightlybent.

• Adjust the position of the headrestraint. For maximum safety, your headshould be as close as possible tothe head restraint.

• Adjust the height of the seat. This adjustment allows you toselect the seat position whichoffers you the best possiblevision.

• Adjust the position of the steeringwheel

Adjusting the seat beltsSit with your back firmly against theseatback.

The shoulder strap 1 should be asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.

The lap strap 2 should be heldfirmly over the thighs and againstthe pelvis.

The belt should be worn so that it isas close to the body as possible, i.e.avoid wearing heavy clothing orhaving bulky objects under thebelts.

1.15

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELTSThese are:

Front seat belt pretensioners.

Force limiters.

Driver's and passenger airbags. These airbags are adaptable inthat they offer a small or largevolume depending on theseverity of the frontal impact.

These systems are provided to actindependently or together when thevehicle is subjected to a frontalimpact.

Depending on the force of theimpact the system may engage:- seat belt locking;- the buckle pretensioner (which

triggers to take up the slack in theseat belt);

- the lap belt pretensioner to keepthe occupant in their seat, the lowvolume front airbag and the loadlimiters;

- the large volume front airbag.

Side airbags are provided toactivate in the event of severeside impacts.

Front seat belt pretensionersWith the ignition switched on, ifthere is a severe frontal impact anddepending on the force of theimpact, the system may engage:- the piston 1 which immediately

retracts the seat belt.

The pretensioners pull the seatbelt against the body, holding theoccupant more securely against theseat, thus increasing the seat belt'sefficiency.

• Have the entire restraintsystem checked followingan accident.

• No operation whatsoeveris permitted on any part of thesystem (pretensioners, airbags, computers, wiring) and thesystem components must not bere-used on any other vehicle, even if identical.

• To avoid premature triggering ofthe system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULTNetwork personnel may work onthe pretensioner and airbagsystem.

• Testing of the electric triggersystem may only be carried outby a specially trained technicianusing special equipment.

• When the vehicle is scrapped, contact your RENAULT Dealerfor disposal of the pretensionerand airbag gas generators.

1.16

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELT (continued)Force limiterAbove a certain severity of impact, this mechanism is used to limit theforce of the belt against the body sothat it is at an acceptable level.

Warning relating to theservice life of airbagsand pretensionersPyrotechnic systems for

airbags and pretensioners have alimited service life: refer to theservicing booklet for yourvehicle for the replacementfrequency.

Driver and passenger airbagsThese are fitted to both the driverand the front passenger seats.

An “Airbag” marking on thesteering wheel and dashboard and alabel in the lower section of thewindscreen inform you of thepresence of additional means ofrestraint (airbags, pretensioners, etc.) in the passenger compartment.

Each airbag system consists of:- an airbag and its two gas

generators (for the small orlarge-volume bag depending onthe severity of the frontal impact)mounted on the steering wheel forthe driver and in the dashboard forthe passenger;

- a computer for both systems,which includes the impactdetector and the monitorcontrolling the electrical triggersystem for each of the gasgenerators;

- A single warning light onthe instrument panel.

The air bag system uses theprinciples of pyrotechnics. Thisexplains why, when the air baginflates, it will generate heat, produce smoke (this does not meanthat a fire is about to start) andmake a noise upon detonation. In asituation where an air bag isrequired, it must inflate immediatelyand this may cause some minor, superficial grazing to the skin.

1.17

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELT (continued)OperationThe system waits a few secondsafter the ignition has been switchedon before being operational.

If a severe frontal impact occurs, the airbag(s) inflate(s) rapidly, cushioning the impact of thedriver's head and chest against thesteering wheel and the frontpassenger's head against thedashboard. The airbag(s) thendeflate(s) immediately so that thepassengers are not impeded in anyway when they get out of thevehicle.

The passenger airbag system islinked to a front passenger airbagdeactivation warning light 2 on theinstrument panel. This warninglight is linked to the passengerairbag deactivation system throughthe ignition key.

It lights up to indicate that thepassenger airbag will not be inflatedin the event of an impact (refer tothe section on Deactivating the frontpassenger airbag).

Operational incidentsWarning light 1 lights up on theinstrument panel when the ignitionis turned on and then goes out aftera few seconds.

If it does not light up when theignition is turned on, there is a faultin the system.

If it lights up while you are driving, stop at once and switch off theignition.

If it is still lit up after the ignitionhas been switched on again, there isa fault in the system. In this case, arear-facing child seat MUST NOT befitted to the front passenger seat.

We do not recommend fitting anyother kind of passenger seat device.

In both cases, consult yourRENAULT Dealer as soon aspossible.

1.18

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELT (continued)All the warnings below are given so that the airbag is not obstructed in any way when it is inflated and also to prevent therisk of serious injuries caused by items which may be dislodged when the airbag inflates.

The airbag is designed to complement the action of the seat belt. Both the airbags and seat belts are integral partsof the same protection system. It is therefore essential to wear the seat belt at all times. If the seat belt is not worn,it exposes the occupants to the risk of serious injury in the event of an accident. It may also increase the risk ofminor, superficial injuries occurring when the airbag is deployed, although such minor injuries are alwayspossible with airbags.

The airbag does not offer protection against minor and moderately serious frontal impacts, side or rear impacts or if thevehicle turns over.

Airbags for driver and passenger• No work or modification whatsoever may be performed on the entire airbag system for the driver and passenger

(computer, wiring, etc.) except by qualified RENAULT network personnel.

• To ensure that the system is in good working order and to avoid incorrect triggering of the system which may causeinjury, only qualified RENAULT network personnel may work on the airbag system.

• As a safety precaution, have the airbag system checked if your vehicle has been involved in an accident, is stolen orbroken into.

• When selling or lending the vehicle, inform the user of these points and hand over this handbook with the vehicle.

• When scrapping your vehicle, contact your RENAULT Dealer for disposal of the gas generator(s).

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELT (continued)

All the warnings given below aredesigned to ensure that the airbagcan inflate correctly and to preventserious injuries caused by itemswhich may be dislodged when theairbag inflates.

Warnings concerning the driver’s airbag• Do not adjust either the steering wheel or the airbag cushion.

• Do not cover the airbag cushion.

• Do not attach any objects (badge, logo, clock, telephone holder, etc.) to theairbag cushion.

• The steering wheel must not be removed (except by qualified personnelfrom the RENAULT network).

• Do not sit too close to the steering wheel. If you sit with your arms slightlybent (see the information on Adjusting your driving position in Section 1),you will ensure that there is sufficient space for the airbag to inflateproperly and to be fully effective.

Warnings concerning the passenger airbag: location 1• Do not attach or glue any objects (badges, logo, clock, telephone holder,

etc.) onto the front passenger side of the dashboard.

• Nothing should be placed between the dashboard and the passenger (pet, umbrella, walking stick, parcels, etc.).

• The passenger must not put his or her feet on the dashboard or seat as thereis a risk that serious injuries may be sustained. As a general rule, keep allparts of the body (knees, hands, head, etc.) well away from the dashboard.

• You should reactivate the airbag as soon as you remove the child seat fromthe front passenger seat to ensure the protection of the front passenger inthe event of an impact.

IT IS FORBIDDEN TO FIT A REAR-FACING CHILD SEAT ON THE FRONTPASSENGER SEAT WHILE THE RESTRAINING METHODS ADDITIONAL

TO THE PASSENGER SEAT BELT ARE NOT DEACTIVATED.(Refer to the information on Deactivationof front passenger airbags in Section 1).

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE FRONT SEAT BELT (continued)Side airbagsThese airbags may be fitted to thefront seats and are deployed at thesides of the seats (door side) toprotect the occupants in the event ofa severe side impact.

The slits on the frontseatbacks (door side) andthe gap between the rearbench seatback and the

interior fittings form the triggerarea for the airbag, so it isforbidden to place any objectsthere.

Warnings concerning theside airbag• Fitting seat covers: Seats

equipped with an airbagrequire special coversspecifically designed for yourvehicle. Consult your RENAULTDealer to see if appropriatecovers are available fromRENAULT outlets. The use of anycovers other than those designedfor your vehicle (and includingthose designed for anothervehicle) may affect the operationof these airbags and reduce yourprotection.

• Do not place any accessories, objects or pets between theseatback and the door. This mayprevent the airbag from operatingcorrectly or cause injury if theairbag is deployed.

• No work or modificationwhatsoever may be carried outon the seat, except by qualifiedRENAULT Network personnel.

METHODS OF RESTRAINT IN ADDITION TO THE REAR SEAT BELTSForce limiterIn the event of a frontal impactabove a certain severity, thismechanism is used to limit the forceof the belt against the body so that itis at an acceptable level.

Rear side seat belt pretensionersThis system is only operationalwhen the ignition is switched on.

If the vehicle is subjected to a severeimpact, a device retracts the seatbelt, pulling the seat belt tightagainst the body and therebyimproving its efficiency.

Warning relating to theservice life of airbags andpretensionersPyrotechnic systems for

airbags and pretensioners have alimited service life: refer to theservicing booklet for your vehiclefor the replacement frequency.

SEAT BELTSThe following information applies to both the vehicle’s front and rear seat belts:

• No modifications may be made to the component parts of the original restraint systems: seat belts andtheir mountings.

Consult your Renault Dealer for special applications (e.g. fitting a child seat).

• Do not use any devices which give any play in the belts (clothes pegs, clips for example).

• Never wear the shoulder strap under your arm or behind your back.

• Never use the same belt for more than one person and never hold a baby or child on your knees with the seatbelt around them.

• The seat belt should never be twisted.

• Following a serious accident, replace all the belts which were in use at the time. Likewise, have the beltsreplaced if they show any signs of wear.

• When refitting the rear bench seat, check that the seat belts are repositioned correctly, to enable them to be usedproperly.

• If necessary, re-adjust the position and tension of the belt.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)

In all countries there are regulationsgoverning the use of restraintsystems for children and babies. In Europe, children under 12 yearsof age, less than 1.50 m tall andweighing less than 36 kg(1) must berestrained with an approvedrestraint adapted to the child'sweight and height. The driver is responsible forensuring that this equipment isused correctly.Child restraints for which typeapproval was obtained after January1992 offer a level of safety muchgreater than for restraints with typeapproval before that date.We therefore advise you to select anapproved child restraint thatcomplies with European regulationECE 44.Restraints that comply with thislegislation must be marked with anorange label bearing the letter Efollowed by a number (whichstands for the country where it is anapproved type) and the year inwhich the type approval wasgranted.

(1) Always comply with the laws of thecountry in which you are travelling. They may be different to theguidelines in this handbook.

Remember that a collision at30 mph (50 km/h) is the same asfalling a distance of 10 metres.Expressed in other terms, transporting a child without arestraint is the equivalent ofallowing him or her to play on athird-floor balcony which does nothave any railings.

Under no circumstancesshould babies or childrenbe allowed to travel sittingon the knees of another

passenger in the vehicle.

If a head-on collision occurs at30 mph (50 km/h) a child weighing30 kg (66 lbs) will be transformedinto a missile equivalent to onetonne: you will find it impossibleto hold the child, even if youyourself are wearing a belt.

It is particularly dangerous to putthe belt round your child when heor she is sitting on your knee.Never use the same belt for morethan one person at the same time.

The tables on the following pagesinform you of the types of seat thatcan be fitted in each of the vehicleseat positions on the vehicle inaccordance with the Europeandirective.

Before installing a child seat in thefront seat (if fitting is permitted)

If the passenger seat is fitted withone, carry out the followingadjustments:- pull back the seat as far as

possible,- straighten the seatback as much as

possible,- raise the seat squab as far as

possible,- pull the headrest up to its

maximum position,- move the seat belt height control

to the low position.

Refer to the Child safety equipmentbooklet available from theRENAULT Network to choose theseat suited to your child andrecommended for your vehicle.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)The right choiceThe safety of your children is alsoyour responsibility.

To give your children maximumprotection, we recommend that youuse seats obtained from a RenaultDealer.

If your vehicle is equipped with anIsofix system, it is preferable to usean Isofix seat. (Refer to theinformation in section 1 on theIsofix system of child seats.)

Restraint systems for all categoriesare available. These systems havebeen developed in consultationwith the manufacturers and havebeen tested in Renault vehicles.

Take the advice of your RenaultDealer and ask him to help you toinstall it.

Category 0 and 0+A child’s neck is very susceptible toinjury up to the age of two. In afront-facing seat there is a risk that achild will sustain neck injuries inthe event of a frontal collision.Renault therefore recommends arear-facing seat with a harness thatgives all-round protection (figure 1).

Category 1Between the ages of 2 and 4, achild’s pelvis is not fully developed.Restraints using three-point beltsare not adequate and there is a riskthat the child will sustainabdominal injuries in the event of afrontal collision. It is thereforeadvisable to use rear-facing seats(figure 1), bucket type seats (figure2) or seats with harnesses.

To avoid any risk to your safety, we recommend that you useRENAULT approved accessories because they are suitable for yourcar and are the only accessories for which RENAULT will provide awarranty.

CHILD SAFETY (continued)

Category 2 (15 to 25 kg) andcategory 3 (22 to 36 kg)To correctly secure the pelvis of achild of up to 12 years old, smallerthan 1.50 m and weighing less than36 kg, it is preferable to use childseats that can be combined withthree-point seat belts. This is abooster seat (figure 3) with beltguides to ensure that the belt will beworn flat over the thighs of thechild.

A booster seat with aheight-adjustable seatback and abelt guide are recommended as thiswill allow the belt to be worn asclose to the base of the neck aspossible but not on it.

Place the head rest in the topposition to allow you to press theseat back of the child seat firmlyagainst the vehicle seatback.

If a booster seat without a seatbackis used, the vehicle's headrest willhave to be adjusted to suit thechild's stature; the upper edge of theheadrest must be at the same heightas the top of the child's head andshould never be lower than in linewith the child's eyes. The standard classifies the

restraints in five categories:Category 0 : from 0 to 10 kg (0 to 22 lbs)Category 0+: from 0 to 13 kg (0 to 28 lbs)Category 1 : from 9 to 18 kg (20 to 40 lbs)Category 2 : from 15 to 25 kg (33 to 55 lbs)Category 3 : from 22 to 36 kg (48 to 80 lbs)

We recommend that you removethe headrest and put it in theluggage compartment, to facilitatefitting certain types of child seat.

Interpreting certain valuesdisplayed after a reset:The values showing average fuelconsumption, range and averagespeed will become more stableand reliable the further you travelsince the last time the reset keywas pressed.

In the first few miles after resetting, you may notice:

• that the range increases as youdrive. This is normal as theaverage consumption may reducewhen:- the vehicle is no longer

accelerating,- the engine reaches normal

operating temperature (resetwhen engine was cold),

- you drive from a built up area tothe open road.

If average consumption isdecreased, the expected rangewill therefore increase.

• average consumption increaseswhen the vehicle is stationaryand idling.

This is normal as the computertakes into account the fuel usedduring idling.

SPECIAL POINTS - DIESEL VERSIONSDiesel engine speedDiesel engines have an injectionsystem with a mechanical governorwhich prevents overrevving of theengine regardless of the gear engaged.

Running out of fuelAfter filling the tank, if you have runcompletely out of fuel, on conditionthat the battery is fully charged, theengine may be started normally.

If, after a few seconds, after severalattempts, the engine will not start, call for the assistance of a RenaultDealer.

Winter precautionsTo avoid any problems in icyconditions:• ensure your battery is always well

charged.

• ensure the fuel level in the tanknever drops too low to avoidcondensation forming at thebottom of the tank.

Vehicles fitted with a diesel fuelheaterThis allows diesel fuel to be usedwith no additives down to –18°C,or, in the case of a vehicle usedregularly over short distances(engine cold) down to –5°C.

ADVICE ON ANTIPOLLUTION AND HOW TO ECONOMISE ON FUEL WHEN DRIVINGRENAULT actively participates inthe reduction of pollutant exhaustgas emissions and in saving energy.

By virtue of its design, its originalsettings and moderate fuelconsumption, your RENAULTconforms to the current antipollutionstandards. Technical design cannotachieve everything, however. Thelevel of exhaust gas pollutantemissions and the fuelconsumption of your vehicle iswithin your control. Ensure thatyour vehicle is maintainedcorrectly, and that you drive and useit carefully.

MaintenanceNot observing the antipollutionlegislation may lead to the owner ofthe vehicle being prosecuted.Replacing parts of the engine, thefuel supply system and the exhaustwith parts which are not originalparts recommended by themanufacturer may mean that yourvehicle no longer conforms to theantipollution regulations.

Have your vehicle checked andadjusted by your Renault Dealer inaccordance with the instructions inyour Warranty and Servicing booklet.

Your Renault Dealer has all theequipment necessary to ensure thatyour vehicle is maintained to itsoriginal standard.

Always remember that the emissionof pollutant fumes is directly linkedto fuel consumption.

Engine adjustments• ignition: this requires no adjustment

• spark plugs: optimum conditionsof use, performance and outputrequire that the specificationslaid down by our DesignDepartment be rigorouslyadhered to.

If the spark plugs have to bereplaced, use the make, type andgap specified for your engine.Consult your Renault Dealer forthis information.

• idle speed: this requires noadjustment.

• air filter, diesel fuel filter: ablocked cartridge reduces outputand must be replaced.

• injection pump setting: this mustbe set to the recommended values.

ADVICE ON ANTIPOLLUTION AND HOW TO ECONOMISE ON FUEL WHEN DRIVING (continued)Monitoring exhaust gasThe exhaust gas monitoring systemwill detect any malfunctioning ofthe vehicle's exhaust gasdepollution system.

If this system malfunctions, toxicsubstances may be released into theatmosphere or mechanical damagemay occur.

This warning light on theinstrument panel willindicate if there are anyproblems with the system:

This lights up when the ignition isswitched on and then goes out.

- If it lights up continuously, consult your Renault Dealer assoon as possible.

- If it flashes, reduce the enginespeed until the light stopsflashing. Consult your RenaultDealer as soon as possible.

Driving• Drive carefully for the first few

miles until the engine reaches itsnormal operating temperaturerather than letting it warm upwhile stationary.

• Speed is expensive.

• “Snappy” driving uses a lot offuel: drive with a “light rightfoot”.

• Brake as little as possible bysuitably anticipating an obstacleor bend and then simply releasingthe accelerator pedal.

• Avoid sudden acceleration.

• Do not overrev the engine inintermediate gears.Use the highest gear possiblewithout labouring the engine.(On versions with an automaticgearbox, try to always useposition D.)

• Try not to maintain the samespeed up a hill as you would onthe level; keep your foot in thesame position on the acceleratorpedal.

• Double declutching andaccelerating before switching offthe engine are superfluousactions in modern cars.

• Bad weather, flooded roadsDo not drive on floodedroads if the depth ofwater is above the loweredge of the wheel rims.

General hints• Electricity is “fuel”; switch off all

the electrical units which are notreally needed.

However, (with safety always inmind), keep your lights on whenthe visibility is bad (see and beseen).

• Try to use the air vents. Driving ata speed of 60 mph (100 km/h)with the windows open willincrease the use of fuel by 4%.

• For vehicles fitted with airconditioning, more fuel may beused during urban driving; switchoff the system when it is not reallyneeded.

• Never fill the fuel tank up to thebrim to avoid it overflowing.

• Do not leave an empty roof rack inposition.

• Use a trailer for carrying bulkyobjects.

• When towing a caravan, fit a winddeflector and adjust it properly.

• Avoid using the car for door todoor calls (short journeys withlong stops in between), as theengine never reaches its idealtemperature. Try to group yourcalls.

Tyres• Inflation pressures which are too

low may increase fuelconsumption.

• The use of non-recommendedtyres may also increase fuelconsumption.

ENVIRONMENTYour vehicle has been designed withthe aim of caring for the environment.

• Most versions are fitted with adepollution system incorporatingthe catalytic converter, oxygensensor and active carbon filter(which prevents fuel vapourevaporating from the fuel tankinto the open air).

• These vehicles run on unleadedfuel only.

• your vehicle comprises 87%recyclable parts and alreadycontains parts which are madefrom recycled materials (as markedon the diagram above).

• 95% of the plastic parts in yourvehicle are marked by a symbolwhich allows the principalcomponent material to be identified. This marking means that the partsremoved can be sorted moreeasily, making recycling of each ofthem easier.

In addition, your vehicle meets therequirements of European legislationconcerning the protection of theenvironment.

Make your contribution toenvironmental protection too !Do not dispose of parts replaced inthe course of routine vehiclemaintenance (battery, oil filter, airfilter...) and oil cans (empty or filledwith old oil...) with householdwaste.

Dispose of them through specialistorganisations. In all cases complywith local legislation.

QUICKSHIFT 5 GEARBOX (continued)Semi-automatic mode (manual)When in automatic mode, movingthe selector lever up or downthrough the gears or pushing theautomatic mode switch will switchthe system into semi-automaticmode. If you push the switch, youdo not need to shift up or downthrough the gears.

You can initiate gear changes usingthe selector lever.

To move up through the gearssimply push the selector leverforwards without necessarilyreleasing the accelerator.

To move down through the gearssimply push the selector leverbackwards without necessarilyreleasing the accelerator.

The system will not tolerate a seriesof up or down changes that causethe engine to underrev or overrev.

Pushing forwards twice insuccession enables a shift up of twogears at once (except in the case ofunderrev). Pulling backwards twicein succession enables a shift downof two gears at once (except in thecase of overrev).

When decelerating with the foot offthe pedal, the gears willautomatically drop to the low speedlimit to avoid stalling. First gearautomatically passes below acertain speed limit. You can stop thevehicle at red lights or junctions etc.by pressing the brake pedal; there isno need to change to neutral (N).

The vehicle will move off again:- slowly, if you release the brake

without accelerating (e.g. when ina traffic jam)

- quickly, if you release the brakeand accelerate.

Note: neutral is only accessiblewhen you are driving or stationarywith your foot on the brake (if youforget, the warning light 3 willcome on and the N sign will flash).

You can change it at any time whendriving by pressing the modechange button. The letter A appearson the display. The vehicle is controlled using theaccelerator and the brake. Gears willchange automatically at the correctmoment to a speed suitable for theengine because the automaticfunction takes into considerationthe weight of the car, the roadsurface and the chosen drivingstyle.

Note:Automatic mode takes account of:- the position and speed of

depression of the acceleratorpedal to assess driving style andselect the optimum gear,

- action on the brake pedal to alertthe engine brake by anticipatingthe down-change

You can stop the vehicle at redlights, with the gear engaged, bypressing the brake pedal; there is noneed to change to neutral.

The vehicle will move off again:- slowly, if you release just the brake

for too long without applying thebrakes or handbrake, there is arisk that the clutch will overheat.

In this event, an intermittent beepwill remind you that you shouldput your foot on the brake orapply the handbrake.

• Never leave the vehicle with theengine running when in gear. For safety reasons you will hearan intermittent beep when youopen the door if you have notshifted into neutral or you havenot switched off the ignition orpressed the brake pedal.

• Your vehicle will not start:you can start the engine when thevehicle is moving if the battery isnot discharged (display lit up).

Proceed as before:- switch on the ignition- select neutral- push or tow the car or run it

down a slope until you reach thespeed at which the warningbuzzer is activated. This willindicate that moving theselector lever forwards willengage the gear most suited tostarting the engine.

Note: never attempt this in reverse.

Operating faultsWhen driving, if thiswarning light comes on, itindicates a fault in the

2.20

ANTI-LOCK BRAKING SYSTEM (ABS)When braking sharply, the two mainaims are to reduce the stoppingdistance and to keep the vehicleunder control. However, dependingon the nature of the ground, theatmospheric conditions and yourreactions, dangers due to loss ofadherence may exist: the wheelsmay lock and directional controlmay be lost. To avoid these risks, your vehicle has been fitted withthe anti-lock braking system (ABS).

The safety enhancement is that thebrake control system prevents thewheels from locking, even if thebrakes are applied too sharply, allowing the vehicle to be steeredand thus its direction to be controlled.Under these circumstances, it is quitepossible for the driver to steer thevehicle and avoid an obstacle whilstat the same time applying the brake. This system also allows stoppingdistances to be improved, especiallywhen adhesion is limited (wet roads, slippery or uneven road surface).

Although this system allows thisoptimisation, the ABS system in noway increases performance which isphysically related to the localadherence conditions between thetyres and the ground. You must stillfollow the rules of good drivingpractice (driving at a safe distancefrom the vehicle in front etc.). Thefact that the vehicle’s safety has beenincreased should not encourage youto take risks.

Each time the system is activated, you will feel a certain degree ofpulsation at the brake pedal. Thesetangible signs will warn you that theadhesion between the tyres and theground has reached its limit andenable you to adapt your drivingstyle to suit the road conditions.

Operating incidentsTwo situations must be considered:

1 - The warning light is

illuminated on the instrumentpanel.Braking is still assured, butwithout the action of the ABSsystem. Consult a Renault Dealeras soon as possible.

2 - The warning lights

are illuminated on the instrumentpanel. This indicates a fault in one ofthe ABS braking components.Braking may be partially assured. It is however dangerous to brakesharply, so you must stopimmediately as soon as trafficconditions allow. Call for theassistance of a Renault Dealer assoon as possible.

The braking modulation provided by the ABS system is independent of the force applied at the pedal. In anemergency, apply firm, continuous pressure at the brake pedal - there is no need to pump it repeatedly.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY PROGRAM: ESPThis system helps you to keepcontrol of the vehicle in “critical”driving conditions (avoiding anobstacle, loss of grip in a bend...).

This function is anadditional aid in theevent of critical drivingconditions to allow the

behaviour of the vehicle to beadapted to the drivingconditions.

However, the function does nottake the place of the driver. Itdoes not increase the vehicle'slimitations and should notencourage you to drive morequickly.

It can, thus, under nocircumstances replace thevigilance or responsibility of thedriver when manoeuvring thevehicle (the driver must alwaysbe aware of sudden incidentswhich may occur when driving).

Operating principleA sensor in the steering wheeldetects the path selected by thedriver.

Other sensors throughout thevehicle measure the actual path.

The system compares the pathselected by the driver and the actualvehicle path and corrects this asnecessary by applying the brakesselectively and/or acting on theengine power.

When the function is in operation, message 1 lights up to confirm this.

TRACTION CONTROL SYSTEMThis system helps to limit skiddingon drive wheels and to control thevehicle when pulling away oraccelerating.

Operating principleThe system uses sensors in thewheels to constantly measure andcompare the speed of the drivewheels and prevents them spinning.

If a wheel is tending to skid, thesystem brakes automatically untilthe drive delivered becomescompatible with the level of grip.

The system also adjusts the enginespeed to the grip available under thewheels, independently of the actionexerted on the accelerator pedal.

When the function is in operation, message 1 lights up to confirm this.

BODYWORK MAINTENANCEProtection against the action ofcorrosive agentsAlthough your vehicle has beentreated with very effectiveanti-corrosion products, it is stillsubject to the action of:

• corrosives in the atmosphere- atmospheric pollution (urban

and industrial areas),- saline atmosphere (near the sea,

particularly in hot weather),- seasonal and humid climatic

conditions, especially road saltin winter.

• abrasives- wind-carried dust and sand, mud,

road grit thrown up by othervehicles.

• minor impacts

To avoid losing the benefits of thisprotection, a minimum number ofprecautions should be taken toensure against this risk.

What you must not do• Wash the vehicle in bright sunlight

or in freezing temperatures.

• Scrape off mud or dirt withoutpre-wetting.

• Allow external dirt to accumulate.

• Allow rust to form after minorimpacts.

• Use solvents not recommendedby Renault's Technical Departmentto remove spots as they maydamage the paintwork.

• Drive frequently in snow or muddyconditions without periodicallywashing the car, particularlyunder the wheel arches and underthe body.

• Degrease or clean mechanicalcomponents (e.g. enginecompartment), underneath thebodywork, parts with hinges (e.g.inside the fuel tank flap, sunroof)and painted plastic externalfittings (e.g. bumpers) using highpressure cleaning apparatus orspraying on products which arenot approved by our TechnicalDepartment as this could give riseto corrosion or incorrect operation.

When fitting tyres to the car, they should either be identical tothose fitted originally orconform to those recommendedby your Renault Dealer.

Maintaining the tyresThe tyres must be in good conditionand the tread form must havesufficient depth: tyres approved byour Technical Department havewear warning strips 1 which arerisers moulded into the tread atseveral points.

When the tread has worn down tothe level of these risers, theybecome visible 2: the tyresconcerned must be replaced now asonly 1.6 mm maximum of treadremains and this is not sufficient tomaintain good grip on wet roads.

Incidents which occur whendriving such as striking the kerbmay damage the tyres and couldlead to the misalignment of the frontaxle geometry.

An overloaded car, long journeys bymotorway, especially in very hotweather, or continual driving onpoor road surfaces will lead to morerapid tyre wear and affect safety.

TYRES (continued)Tyre inflation pressuresTyre inflation pressures must beadhered to. (Remember to check theemergency spare wheel at the sametime.) Inflation pressures must bechecked at least once a month andalways before a long journey. (Referto the section on Tyre inflationpressures).

Incorrect tyre pressureslead to abnormal tyrewear and unusually hot

running. Factors which mayseriously affect safety and leadto:- poor roadholding- possibility of blow-outs or of

throwing a tread at high speed.

Inflation pressures depend onthe load and the driving speed.Adjust the pressures accordingto the conditions of use. (Refer tothe section on tyre inflationpressures).

Pressures should be checked whenthe tyres are cold; ignore higherpressures which may be reached inhot weather or after driving at highspeeds.

If tyre pressures cannot be checkedwhen the tyres are cold, assume anincrease of 0.2 to 0.3 bar (3 PSI).

Never deflate a hot tyre.

Note: a label (depending on countryor version) affixed to the edge orframe of the driver's door gives therecommended tyre pressures.

Replacing tyres

For safety reasons, thisoperation must only becarried out by aspecialist.

Fitting different tyres maychange your vehicle as follows:- It may mean that your vehicle

no longer conforms to currentregulations.

- It may change the way ithandles when cornering.

- It may cause the steering to beheavy.

- It may cause tyre noise.- It may affect the use of chains.

Changing wheels aroundThis practice is not recommended.

Emergency spare wheelRefer to the information on theemergency spare wheel andinstructions on how to change awheel in section 5.

TYRES (continued)Use in winter• Chains

For safety reasons, chains mustnever be fitted to the wheels onthe rear axle.

Chains must not be fitted to tyreswhich are larger than thoseoriginally fitted to the vehicle.

Chains may only be fittedto tyres of the same sizeas those originally fittedto your vehicle.

• “Snow” or winter tyresWe recommend that these arefitted to all four wheels to ensurethat your vehicle retainsmaximum road holding.

Note: These tyres sometimeshave:- a specific direction of rotation- a maximum speed which may

be lower than the maximumspeed of your vehicle.

• Studded tyresThis type of equipment may onlybe used for a limited period andas laid down by local legislation.

It is necessary to keep to the speedspecified by current legislation.

As a minimum, these tyres may befitted to the two front wheels.

In all cases, we recommend thatyou consult your Renault Dealer, who will be able to advise you onthe choice of equipment which ismost suitable for your vehicle.

BATTERY breakdownTo avoid all risk of sparks:- Ensure that the consumers are

disconnected before disconnectingor reconnecting the battery.

- When charging, switch off thecharger before connecting ordisconnecting the battery.

- Do not place metal objects on thebattery to avoid creating a shortcircuit between the terminals.

Connecting a battery chargerBoth battery leads must bedisconnected (with the engineswitched off).

Do not disconnect the battery whenthe engine is running. Follow theinstructions for use given by themanufacturer of the battery chargeryou are using.

Only a well-charged andwell-maintained battery will have along and useful life and enable youto start the vehicle’s enginenormally.

The battery must be kept clean anddry.

Have the battery's charge statuschecked regularly:• especially if you use your vehicle

for short journeys or for frequentdriving in town;

• When the external temperaturedrops (in winter), the chargedecreases. In winter, only usethose electrical comsumers whichare really necessary.

• Finally, you should understandthat the charge decreasesnaturally as a result of certainpermanent consumers such as:the clock, aftermarketaccessories...

When a large number of accessoriesare fitted to the vehicle, have themconnected to + after ignition. In thiscase, it is advisable to have yourvehicle fitted with a battery whichhas an increased nominal capacity.Consult your Renault Dealer.

If the vehicle is to be left stationaryfor a long time, disconnect thebattery and recharge it regularly, especially in cold weather. Thememories, radio etc. will then haveto be reprogrammed. The batterymust be stored in a dry andventilated area protected from frost.

Specific procedures maybe required to chargesome batteries. Consultyour Renault Dealer.

Avoid all risk of sparks whichmay cause an immediateexplosion and charge the batteryin a well-ventilated area.Risk of serious injury.

BATTERY: breakdown (continued)Starting the vehicle using thebattery from another vehicleProceed as follows when startingyour vehicle from another vehicle'sbattery:

Obtain suitable jump leads (with alarge cross section) from a RenaultDealer or, if you already have jumpleads, ensure that they are in perfectcondition.

Both batteries must have anidentical nominal voltage: 12 volts. The battery supplying the currentshould have a capacity (amp-hours,Ah) which is at least the same asthat of the discharged battery.

A frozen battery must be thawed outbefore current is supplied to it.

Ensure that there is no risk ofcontact between the two vehicles(risk of short circuiting when thepositive terminals are connected)and that the discharged battery isproperly connected. Switch off yourvehicle ignition.

Start the engine of the vehiclesupplying the current and run it ataverage speed.

Secure the positive cable (+) A tothe (+) terminal 1 of the dischargedbattery then to (+) terminal 2 of thebattery supplying the current.

Secure the negative cable (–) B tothe (–) terminal 3 of the batterysupplying the current then to the (–)terminal 4 of the discharged battery.

Check that there is no contactbetween cables A and B and thatcable A is not touching any metalparts on the vehicle supplying thecurrent.

Start the engine as you wouldnormally. As soon as it starts, disconnect cables A and B in thereverse order (4-3-2-1).

Handle the battery withcare since it containssulphuric acid whichmust never come into

contact with eyes or skin. If itdoes, wash with plenty of water.Keep all flames, light sourcesand sparks away from thebattery: risk of explosion.Take care when working in theengine compartment as theengine cooling fan may cut in atany moment without warning.
