From Our Administrator As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving with family, it is with sadness that I say goodbye to my Renaissance family. I have treasured my 7 years here and have made countless memories that I will carry with me as I move on. Thank you for all the joy you have brought to me daily and for all of the support from the staff, families and community. The residents, staff and families of Renaissance will forever be in my thoughts and heart and I wish all of you a happy holiday season. The youngest of ten, Mrs. Choy had eight sisters and one brother. Her father, Joseph, was a barber who was also a bootlegger on the side. Her mother, Margaret, who was referred to as Sis Pearl, was “the sweetest woman you would ever want to meet”. The family came up together on Catherine Street in South Philadelphia. Mrs. Choy attended Durham Elementary School, Barrett Junior High School, and Overbrook High School. Then, one fateful night when she was 24 years old, she was out having dinner at a Chinese restaurant on Christian Street and a man name Ling Way Choy approached her. Florence shared that “he came out, and that was that”. The two were married and had six children together, four daughters and two sons. She now has one granddaughter and five grandsons. She also excitedly shared that her son’s family is expecting her seventh grandchild. Mrs. Choy shared that she would walk anywhere and always enjoyed walking, along with gambling, cooking, and movies. Here at Renaissance, she is an active member of the Bell Choir, Computer Club and competed as a member of Team Renaissance at the 2017 Golden Games. A NOTE FROM... Dr. Joshua Uy Medical Director Many people often ask me about what they need to do in order to maintain their health as well as possible. People ask about aspirin, cancer screening, cholesterol medications or medications for memory. After being a doctor for nearly 20 years, I am convinced that what helps a person maintain their health in aging are the same things that have maintained their health throughout their lifespan: regular exercise, intellectual and social engagement and a routine sleep schedule.

Thanksgiving is a time to gather together with family and friends. This year, as in years past, all Renaissance Residents are encouraged to invite their family and friends to come to Renaissance to dine with them. Our Thanksgiving Family Meal will be held at 12:00pm on Thanksgiving Day, Thursday, November 23rd. Tickets will be available with our receptionist until Thursday, November 16th, and the cost is $7 per person. Space is limited, so please don’t delay.
