Resident Spotlight: Betty T. Betty T. was born in Texas and grew up near Witchita Falls. Her father worked in

the oil field. He’d walk miles upon miles each day with Betty trailing his steps as he walked each well by foot. Reflecting on her walks with

her father, she’s surprised she could keep up because they lived out in the country and there were rattlesnakes everywhere. Her mother was a good woman, but she had a temper. Betty was the oldest of three children, but she was the smallest compared to her younger sister and brother. Despite her small stature, she too had a temper and will not put up with disrespect. She lived in Texas most of her life, even after she married. She and her first husband, Frank, got married at an early age after he got out of the military. She also had her first baby at 16 years old. She had two children, a boy, Gordon, and a girl, Nancy. She did not have more because her husband was 6’7” and she “did not get itty bitty babies, but rather football players”, as she put it. She also found that living out in the country and

taking care of babies was a challenge. After a few years of living in Texas, they made the move out to California and Betty and her husband later separated. Betty met her second husband, James, while working for Boeing. She worked on airplanes, and he was a pilot. They had banter back and forth with each other, but she shares that she got even with him, she married him. They lived a wonderful life together, traveling to all sorts of destinations nationally and internationally. Betty enjoyed the times they traveled and after growing up in the country took every opportunity to see everything she could. Later, James became ill and after 15 years of working at Boeing, she left to take care of him. Unfortunately, he passed away, but he went home to be with the Lord, so she is looking forward to being reunited with him one day. Despite her husband’s passing, she still has another man in her life, and he has four legs. Lucky is her constant companion, he even sits down next to her on the couch to watch TV with her. She feels that Lucky thinks he’s got it made here at Renaissance Village, and she enjoys having him by her side at every turn. Betty is quick-witted and always ready to share a laugh. Be sure to say hello when you see her around the community.

ARE YOU READY TO GUESS WHO?:

How to Get a Better Night’s Sleep As we age our sleep patterns tend to change. These changes in sleep patterns can result in overall problems with getting to sleep and sleeping well. Older adults may face problems such as having a challenging time falling asleep, waking up more often during the night and waking up earlier in the morning. Older adults experience less time spent in deep sleep, also known as rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. As infants, we spend about 50 percent of our sleep in REM, however, older adults only experience 20 percent. This smaller percentage in REM sleep can cause older adults to wake up more often. This change in sleep patterns can also cause Chronic Insomnia, Sleep Apnea and sleep disorders like Restless Leg Syndrome. While the number of hours you need to sleep each night varies person to person, individuals should strive to get 7 – 9 hours of sleep each night. Although these changes in sleep patterns are unavoidable, there are a few things you can do to help combat getting stuck counting sheep. Make a routine and stick to it. Going to bed at the same time each night and waking up at the same time each morning gets your body into the habit of knowing when it’s time for bed. Skip the caffeine. Avoid stimulants such as caffeine for at least 3 to 4 hours before bed. Additionally, it’s best to avoid alcohol before bed time, some believe it helps sleep, but it negatively impacts your sleep quality. Take a Cat Nap. It’s okay to nap, but avoid napping more than 20 - 30 minutes Limit Electronic Use Before Bed. Stop using phones and TV one hour before bed, as studies have shown that the blue and white lights given off by these devices can prevent

the brain from releasing Melatonin. Get in the sun. Try to get outside in the sun each day; this allows your body to know when it’s time to be awake and when it’s not. Want to learn more about the common sleep disorders among seniors, what affects sleep and tips on how to get a more restful night’s sleep? Join us for our next seminar: Seniors & Sleep Disturbances with Jerry Hizon, MD on Saturday, October 7 from 2 – 3 p.m. Call 951-319-8243 to RSVP.

Older adults only experience 20 percent of REM sleep.

Want to learn more about what is covered by Medicare and what isn’t? We’re hosting a Medicare Seminar on October 9 at 2 p.m. that will discuss Medicare basics and cover short and long-term coverage and life insurance. Please call (951) 319-8243 to RSVP by October 7 to secure your spot!

Employee of the Month: Abby Schuster

hearing their stories. She feels she used to take so much more for granted before working here because residents can just get a little tummy ache and it affects them so much. She also enjoys the words of wisdom they share. When Abby is not working, she enjoys spending time with her boyfriend, Michael, whom she met while she was working for Garage Brewing Company. They love to travel and California is the perfect place to do it considering it’s an hour to either San Diego or Los Angeles. When she has three-day weekends, she also enjoys driving up to San Francisco. In fact, it’s one of her favorite places to travel and she’s already been there three to four times this year. Abby is also vegan, and they like trying out new vegan restaurants wherever they go. She and Michael also consider themselves movie junkies. They like to watch movies they haven’t seen and they make it a point to go on a date once or twice every two weeks. Additionally, Abby likes to walk, and ultimately would love to live somewhere she didn’t need a car. Abby thinks that she would like to become a travel agent one day. Her grandmother was also a travel agent, and even had her own business. She likes the idea of getting to travel and recommending travel options to others. Abby, thank you for your hard work in serving our residents. Congratulations on Employee of the Month.

Abby serving residents refreshments in our on-site Bistro.

Abby Schuster is one of the servers in our Dining Room. She’s great with engaging residents and making their dining experiences special. Abby was born in Escondido as the youngest of eight siblings, however, she does have a younger half-brother who lives in Illinois with her dad. Her mother and father divorced when she was one or two. While growing up, her family moved around a lot, she’s lived in Fallbrook, Temecula, Murrieta, Wildomar and currently resides in Lake Elsinore. Due to all the moving, she attended six different high schools and ultimately graduated from Murrieta Valley Adult School and Community Education. She moved out when she was 17, a time where she needed to spread her wings and fly. She currently lives with her family, and her 5-year-old nephew, whom she adores, has her wrapped around his little finger. Abby remembers going to senior living community to visit seniors with her grandpa while she was growing up. She always hit it off with them, and even now she feels as though she gets along better with seniors than even people her own age. Serving at Renaissance Village is different compared to the other serving jobs she’s experienced. She’s worked at Garage Brewing Company, Blackbird Tavern and Pieology. She loves working with the residents and
