Artist Painting Discussion of the painting Example: Benozzo Gozzoli 15th c. Florence

Journey of the Magi

Medici patron was painted into the scene! This was common in an age where your patron frequently dictated the scene they wanted depicted. Religious theme- The Magi are the 3 Wise Men from the Nativity story. This is a scene from the New Testament, but adapted to Renaissance Italian court styles (notice the dress, castle in the background) Use of individualism (dress and facial expressions), realistic backgrounds (nature, paths, sky, buildings), perspective (larger in front, trails off to a distance), motion, bright colors.
