Having gained a considerable foothold on the lighter, brashy soils of Oxfordshireover recent years, Burr Chervil is now the subject of a concerted campaign byNIABTAG’s regional agronomists.

Andrew Chell advises on over 15,000 acres in the county and explains that thisaggressive and difficult to control, umbelliferous weed has become a focal pointof his early spring broad leaved weed herbicide programme.

“Leave it till after T0 and you’ve got a problem,” he advises. “Although the bulkof the issues are on the lighter soils, increasingly, we’re seeing it slowly spreadingonto the Oxford clays too. With our particular winter cereal based rotations, control is limited to the wheat and barley crops with little evidence of satisfactorycontrol in rape.

Feed Market Update

TariffsMembers will probably be aware of the imposition of tariffs on imported feedstuffs, but it’s worthhighlighting this point again.

No tariffs will be implemented until the UK officially leaves the EU and in the event of a “no deal” trade agreement. If tariffs need to be applied to products, these might vary depending on that product’s country of origin.

As for tariffs being applied on top of any contract placed before we leave the EU, the latest supplier contracts T&Cs do now include a new clause that covers this subject. The shippers and importers have written into their contracts to the trade that they will pass on any tariffs imposed on a certain date, irrespective of when the contract was taken out. This will obviously mean the trade having to pass any tariffs they incur on to the end user. That said, it’s not known at this time what tariffs will be applied to which commodity, so it may only affect certain products.

The Show is an event for the Young Farmers to celebrate everything they do throughout the year. It is also a day of family fun with animals, food, entertainment, craft and trade stands. The impressive competitions area set up by the Young Farmers Clubs will showcase the kinds of activities they are involved in, including cooking, rural skills, arts and crafts, floral displays and much more.

Also, the Main Ring attractions are set to provide some excellent entertainment! Millets Falconry is home to over 100 birds of prey from owls to eagles. They will display within the ring and have a static stand on-site so visitors are able to visit all day. The team will show their wide and diverse range of birds whilst informing visitors as to what they are capable of and how they live in the wild.

We will also be welcoming Joseph’s Amazing Racing Pigs! Five rare breed pigs – Tamworth top racers, Berkshire bit bitey and the comedy Gloucester Old Spots – will be bringing fantastic comedy action to the Show. Additionally, Dan and Dandi the performing horse act will be in attendance. They spent two years touring with Giffords Circus and have performed at various venues including Blenheim Palace. We are now lucky enough to have them with us on the day!

Interspersed between all of these exciting attractions will be our very own entertaining Young Farmer competitions with Obstacle Races, Go-Karts, Float competitions and the all-important Oxfordshire YFC Tug of War finals. Last year, our Faringdon YFC Ladies made it to the National Finals at Tenbury Show. With training already started this year, we are expecting a great competition.

There is also a chance to win some Grand Raffle Prizes which have been kindly donated by local businesses. These include Ariat boots up to £200, Cotswold Wildlife Park tickets, a luxury hamper from Millets Farm, Roves Farm family pass, Kids Massey Ferguson Tractor and Trailer plus various vouchers for tools, work boots, overalls, a toy tractor and much more!

It's not surprising that the Show enjoys an excellent reputation and attracts such a broad audience.
