BACKGROUND
Human Health Risk Assessment Study: 2013 – 2016 (HRA Phase 1)
– Identified the need for further air quality management in selected areas (viz.
Wellington/Paarl; Milnerton/Du Noon; Khayelitsha/Philippi)
– Recommended air quality monitoring in these areas
o Measure real-time air pollutant concentrations
Air quality flying laboratory, mounted to a drone (RPAS)
– good approach (vertical air quality monitoring)
– portability of the drone (faster response to events)
– impractical / time consuming: move existing ambient monitoring stations & trends
– initial thoughts on using in-situ air quality monitoring data:
o real-time indication of ambient air quality / facility stack emissions when air
quality complaints are investigated or compliance inspections undertaken,
and for air quality planning purposes (e.g. linked to dispersion modelling etc.)

MITS funding (Phase 2 HRA):
– Portable Flying Air Sampling Unit (Scentroid DR1000) in-situ data
o Service Provider appointed to legally fly the Unit (mounted to their drone)
o Train 3 officials to obtain their Remote Pilot Licences
MTEF 2017/2018 funding to procure an RPAS (i.e. drone):
– Model DJI S1000, to perform future in-house drone flying of the Air Sampling Unit
