Remote Desktop Protocol (RDP)

• What is the Remote Desktop (RDP)? – RDP is a software that allows a user to access applications and data on a

remote computer over a network. – To access RDP, launch Internet Explorer on the Local Desktop. The web

page to log into RDP will automatically load. (http://desktop.taylormorrison.com)

• What is the Local desktop?– The Local Desktop is the first screen that you see when you power on your

computer.

Local Desktop/TeamViewer

– There will be a minimal number of shortcuts on the local desktop. Usually the Recycle Bin, Internet Explorer & TeamViewer (sample to the left)

1. The software used by the IT Department to remote onto your computer (replaces Kaysea) and perform troubleshooting is called TeamViewer.

– Double click on the shortcut to launch– Choose Run– Click Yes when asked if you would like to allow the program to make

changes to your computer. – Give the Help Desk Analyst the ID and Password to connect. (leave

TeamViewer open after doing so)

• The Internet Explorer shortcut is what you use to access RDP. Double click the shortcut to launch.

How to access the Remote Desktop (RDP)

• After launching Internet Explorer on the local desktop, the Taylor Morrison home page will automatically load. The web address for the home page is:

http://desktop.taylormorrison.com

• On the Taylor Morrison home page, single click on the Darling shortcut to launch the remote desktop

If prompted to open or save the file, click Open.

• The following applications are standard on the remote desktop: – Office 2010 – Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.– AS400 Client– Access to DHIOnline.net– Access to DH SharePoint and Taylor Morrison

The Remote Desktop vs. Local Desktop

There are many ways you can determine the difference between the remote desktop and the local desktop. Some of the most obvious are:

•The local desktop has very few shortcuts displayed.•If you see a shortcut for TeamViewer you are on the local desktop. TeamViewer is only installed on the local.•The remote desktop will have a blue bar at the top, center of your monitor labeled rddh1.twc.pvt, rddh2.twc.pvt or something similar. See example below:

The Remote Desktop Connection Bar

1. Click here to unpin the connection bar.2. Click here to minimize your remote desktop session.3. Click here to restore down the window.4. Click here to disconnect the RDP session. Clicking this

closes the RDP session leaving any applications open running. Disconnecting the RDP session is not the same as logging out of RDP.

How to Properly Log Out of the Remote Desktop (RDP)

Logging off the desktop properly protects against data corruption and frees up system resources on the network. End users should log off a PC when leaving for the day or when away from the system for an extended period of time.

To properly log out of RDP:•Click on Start•Choose Log Off•Wait for the log off process to complete.•Close out of any open windows and power off your machine.

How to Install a Printer in the Remote Desktop

• Click on Start• Choose All Programs• Locate the folder .Printers• Click on Texas and Colorado Printers• Locate and click on the desired printer’s name from the list• Under Printer Actions on the left side of the page click

How to Install a Printer in the Remote Desktop

• Click “Yes” to add the printer connection

• To set the printer as your default printer, click the link “Click here to open the…”, then follow the steps below. If you do not want this printer as your default the process is complete and the printer is now available for use.

• To make the printer the default printer after clicking on the link above, right click on the printer and choose the Set as default printer option. The default printer is indicated by a green circle with white check mark next to it.

Common Issues Encountered & How to Address

Temporary Profile •Symptoms:

– When logging into the remote desktop you may receive a message that you have been logged in with a temporary profile;

– Or you may notice you are missing shortcuts on your desktop;– Or you are prompted to run the setup wizard when opening outlook

•Solution: – Log out of the remote desktop by clicking on Start then Log Off. Wait 10 – 15 seconds and

try logging in again. If you still get a temporary profile after following these steps contact the Help Desk.

Disconnected Session•Symptom:

– After logging into RDP user sees nothing but a black screen

•Solution: – Contact the Help Desk.
