1. Launching the clientLaunch the Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection client application from the default location at:
Start | All Programs | Accessories | Communications | Remote Desktop Connection
2. Configure the clientWe recommend configuring some options as follows, for the best remote experience
- Click Options
- Select the Experience Tab

- Select Modem (56Kbps), this will pre-configure the check-boxes as follows
- Select the Local Resources tab, and enable only the options you need
- The most common options are: Local Devices Disk drives and Local Devices Printers.
Disk Drives Allows you to access drives local to your system via the connection at
\\tclient\
Printers Allows you to access printers configured on your computer (network or local)

3. Connecting to the remote systemTo connect to the remote system, enter the hostname, or IP address of the system you wish to connect to;
then click Connect.

4. Logging inOnce connected to the remote system, login using your assigned AD account and password

6. Troubleshooting- Unable to connect
o Common causes are:
Unable to resolve the Computer name specified in the connection dialog.
y Verify the name is correct
y When coming across a VPN connection, try using the IP address (asyour system will probably not be using Qwest DNS servers)
Firewall / VPN configuration issue
y Work with your firewall / VPN team to troubleshoot Remote system is powered off
- Black / Blank login screen
o Disable Bitmap Caching on the Experience tab within the client options. See MS KB

There are two widely used open source clients for various *nix systems.
- rdesktop http://www.rdesktop.org
- xrdp http://xrdp.sourceforge.net

Max OS X users can use one of the above clients (provided they install the X server option within OS X),or they can use the Microsoft client, downloadable from Microsoft site at http://www.microsoft.com/mac/
