OCT/NOV 2017 REMARKS FROM ST. MARKS PAGE 3

“Bienvenido, Servicio de Adoracion Espanol” “Welcome, Worship Service in Spanish” In early August a young woman (Brenda) stopped by the church office to see me. She had her 14-year-old daughter (Joelys) and her 8-year-old son (Brandon) with her. After some light conversation, Brenda asked about seeing the church. We’re standing in the church, and she asks me a few questions: “How many does the church seat?” I reply, “About 300.” “Do you fill the church?” “No.” “Do you speak Spanish?” “No.” “Would you like to learn?” I’m beginning to wonder where she is going with this, so I ask. “Brenda, why all the questions, especially whether or not I speak Spanish?

“Well, my friends and I are looking for a church that might allow us to worship there, in Spanish, it could be well over a hundred people.” “A hundred?!” I responded incredulously. “I had no idea there were that many Spanish speaking people in the valley.” “Yes, many more than you think. My family is from Puerto Rico. We’re still trying to see our home there. There are Spanish speaking from many countries, Venezuela, Colombia, Mexico, and more. We’re looking for a place to call ‘home’”. We talked for quite a while. She and her family have been coming to our 10:15 service for nearly two months. Her daughter now sings in the adult choir. We talked about how the service would look. She said, “Exactly what you do at the 10:15 service, although we

would want communion at each service.” With that, Church Council met on the Sunday of Labor Day weekend to discuss, and finally approve offering a Spanish speaking service on the second and fourth Sundays of the month, 2:00 PM, beginning October 8th. In contacting our synod, I learned that in the five county area (the “turf” of our synod) we have only one Lutheran church that offers a Spanish speaking service. Church Council felt this was an opportunity for St. Mark’s to reach out to the Latinos in our community. Now this means extra work for Judy (Director of Music/Organist), Reenie (Sexton) and Kathy (Office Administrator). Judy would need to provide the music; Reenie would need to open and close the building and clean; and, Kathy would be faced with running off more bulletins. They would receive extra compensation on a monthly basis for their time. Estimated costs would be about $700 - $750 a month. These expenses would be met from two sources, one, from the offering; and, two, a member would like to make an anonymous donation to help make this happen. I believe that Church Council and I see this as a wonderful opportunity for outreach into the community. Can you just imagine, when our church was built in 1900, the walls largely heard Pennsylvania Dutch spoken. Through the years the walls heard more and more English spoken. Now the walls will hear Spanish spoken along with English. Now, I must confess folks, this is a challenge. I am needing to dust off my high school and college Spanish, a language I’ve not used in nearly 45 years. A language I did not excel in, I

R O A D T O T H E REFORMATION: Martin Luther’s German Bible Martin Luther was the first person to translate and publish the Bible in the

commonly-spoken dialect of the German people. He used the recent critical Greek edition of Erasmus, a text which was later called textus receptus. The Luther German New Testament translation was first published in September of 1522. The translation of the Old Testament followed, yielding an entire German language Bible in 1534. Luther is also known to have befriended William Tyndale, and given him safe haven and assistance in using the same 1516 Erasmus Greek-Latin Parallel New Testament that had been the source for his German New Testament of 1522, as the trustworthy source text for Tyndale’s New Testament of 1525-26. From the Lutheran Book of Prayer: For Our Congregation Remember, O Lord, our congregation, Your people, Who are nothing without You, Who need the Word of Your forgiveness, Who need comfort and solace, Who need healing and help, Who need courage and strength, Who need counsel and guidance, Who need food and shelter, Who need correction and admonition, Who need acceptance and assurance, Who need zeal and a willing mind, Who need example and direction, Who need charity and goodness, Who need humility and honesty, Who need liberty and peace, Who need wisdom and insight, Who need faith and hope, Who need love and joy, For we are Your people gathered by Your Spirit around Word and sacraments, that we may be scattered to share Your love through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCE: November 19th, 3:00 PM. This brief (30-35 minute) but effective service is for those members and friends of St. Mark’s who might have lost a loved one

in the past year or two and are facing the holidays (Thanksgiving and Christmas) without that special someone. Our guest speaker this year will be the Rev. Homer Royer, former Associate Pastor at New Goshenhoppen United Church of Christ. Light refreshments will follow the service. Again, Members and friends of St. Mark’s are welcome! The article below is from Comfort for a Grieving Heart newsletter, by Mindy Watson, Bereavement Coordinator and Counselor at St. Luke’s Hospice, it appears with her permission and our deep appreciation. “Oh, Hello.” “From the moment we are born, we say hello to love in our lives by seeking it out, by acknowledging it when it unfolds, by welcoming it, and by nurturing it so that it will continue. We must also say hello to loss and grief in our lives. To be sure, we do not seek it out, when it unfolds, we must acknowledge it. I would even say that we must welcome our grief. After all, the hurt we feel is the consequence of the love we were privileged to experience.” Alan Wolfelt Saying hello to our grief can feel a little bit like a paradox. As we begin to adjust and cope in a world without our loved one, we start to say hello to new feelings, new routines, new changes; but these hellos are not wanted or easily accepted, as they remind us of the goodbye we just said. Living in a high-speed world can both be a blessing and a curse. With the click of a button, we can “go” almost anywhere and do almost anything. We have fast food, text messaging, high speed internet. Everything is go-go-go. It seems only natural, then, that grief should work the same way, right? So often after only a few weeks or months after the loss of someone loved, people begin to wonder why they are not “over” (or are just beginning) the intense feelings of grief; why they are still crying or in a daze; or why in this world of high efficiency they are feeling so inefficient. We live in a world of instant gratification and one where there is a

prescription for just about every ailment under the sun. So, why no instant relief or magic pill for grief? Our body is designed to slow down during periods of grief. Your feelings of fatigue, exhaustion, and lack of focus are not because you are suddenly lazy. Your body is giving you a cue that it is time to slow down. Grieving is hard work that takes its toll mentally, emotionally, physically, spiritually, and socially. There is no way to fast forward through it. No button to click, no one-stop shopping, no magic pill. What we need to do, instead, is slow down and say hello to our grief. So, how do we say hello to grief? We pay attention to it. We acknowledge when it is present and heavy, and we sit with it and spend time with our emotions and feelings. We share pictures and tell stories. We do things in our loved one’s memory. We cry. We visit the gravesite. We ask for help. We are gentle and patient with ourselves. In doing these things, we begin to acknowledge and realize that our relationship with our loved one did not end just because he or she is no longer alive. Rather, our loved one is woven into the fabric of who we are, and will forever be part of our story. – Mindy Watson

IT MAKES YOU WONDER A small town had historically been dry (No purchasing or serving of any kind of liquor), but then a local businessman decided to build a tavern. A group of Christians from a

local church were concerned and held an all-night prayer meeting to ask God to intervene. It just so happened that shortly thereafter, lightning struck the bar, and it burned down to the ground. The owner of the bar sued the church, claiming the prayers of the congregation were responsible, but the church hired a lawyer to argue in court that the prayers were not responsible for the lightning and fire. The presiding judge, after his initial review of the case, stated that “no matter how this case comes out, one thing is clear: The tavern owner believes in prayer and the Christians do not.” – Copied

A N N I V E R S A R Y O F T H E REFORMATION: Along with our neighbors and friends from St. John’s, St. Paul’s, Friedens UCC, Pennsburg UCC, New Goshenhoppen and Palm Schwenkfelder, we will bring a close to our year’s long recognition of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation on Sunday, October 29th, 3 PM, with a service of Holy Communion at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Sumneytown. Special music will be presented that day, and Rev. Lee Barrett, professor at Lancaster UCC Seminary will be the guest preacher. All in attendance are asked to bring one or more food items for the food pantry of the Open Link, this is the “admission” to receive the food and beverage- see below. Food, fellowship and special music will follow at 4:30PM. The food will be made by Franconia Heritage. They will provide Bratwurst, Spaetzle, and German Potato Salad. The seven participating churches will provide: hot dogs, sauerkraut, applesauce, ring bologna and cheese, soft pretzels (St. Mark’s is to provide the pretzels) and desserts. Beverages will include soft drinks as well as Beer (provided by Weyerbacher Brewery) and wine (provided by Unami Ridge Winery), a Reformation wine made in honor of the 500th anniversary. If you notice a theme in the food and beverage, yes, everything has a German “flavor” to it. We are planning on serving up to 250 people. Donation baskets will be throughout to help cover expenses. Weather permitting, the Red Hill Band will play in the back parking lot (behind the Fellowship Hall). Folks are encouraged to bring along your favorite lawn chair. Volunteers are needed from each church to do the following: • One person to assist with the set up on

Saturday, October 28, 10 AM • Two people to assist with the set up and

serving of food on Sunday, October 29th at 3:30 PM

• Two people to assist with clean up at the conclusion of the event (tearing down tables, washing dishes, putting away chairs, etc.)

If interested, please speak to Pastor Chuck or Kathy in the church office.

Dear Endowment Fund Committee & Aiello Family: Thank you so much for selecting me as the first recipient of the Pat Aiello Scholarship. I am honored to receive this award in the name of a fellow nurse. Nursing is my passion and this contribution to my education means so much to me. Thank you again, Sierra J. Kahler Dear St. Mark’s: I would like to extend my many thanks to the church for choosing me as one of the 2017 Endowment Fund Scholarship recipients. This scholarship greatly relieves some financial burden that pertains to the purchasing of college textbooks. Being a science major, along with other necessary classes, becomes very expensive. Many thanks and blessings – Alyssa Long Dear Members of St. Mark’s: Thank you so much for the $600.00 scholarship. It means so much to me that I have a church family that will help and support my journey! Thanks you again! Sincerely, Kaitlyn Berger To St. Mark’s Lutheran Church: Please extend our deepest gratitude to Pastor Chuck for giving mom a wonderful final tribute. Sincerely Jim & Charmaine (Marks) Krauss St. Mark’s and Pastor Chuck: Thank you so very much for baptizing Mckenzie.
