REMANUFACTURING AND REUSE IN A CHANGING AUTOMOTIVE WORLD – A

THREE CONTINENT APPROACH

Cascade Use in Three Continents

The Cascade Use research group seeks toinvestigate the efficacy and potential for acircular economy that maximises resourceefficiency. There is an existing partnershipbetween the group and China and Canadawhich provides valuable international insight, case studies and exposure. The partnershipconsiders all parts of the automobile, from thecritical materials and electronics used to theabundant materials.

Overview

Scarce and valuable resources, includingpotentially hazardous materials, areincreasingly present in end-of-life vehicles.Electrical and electronic components inmotors, sensors, electronics, batteries, andother parts present new materials andmaterial combinations. And compositions willcontinue to change as new products becomesafer, more efficient, more communicativeand intelligent.

A new three-continent collaboration betweenresearchers in Asia, Europe and North Americais introduced. The effort includes assessment ofinformation on the changing composition ofvehicles, development of decision-makingtools to assist in reuse and recycling, anddevelopment of eco-efficient engineeringprocesses for remanufacturing.

New Directions

The recycling markets in Germany, Canadaand China are vast and consist of manyindustrial and academic links. The CascadeUse research group is actively seeking tomake new industry connections to collaborateon open and closed loop problems.
