FROMTHEPASTOR’SDESK

“Let us fix our gaze on the Blood of Christ and realize how truly precious it is, seeing that it was poured out for our salvation and brought the grace of conversion to the whole world.”

– Pope St. Clement I

The month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood. The feast of the Precious Blood of our Lord was instituted in 1849 by Pope Pius IX, but the devotion is as old as Christianity. The early Fathers say that the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, and that the sacraments were brought forth through His Blood. As followers of Christ, we should not consider the devotion to the Precious Blood a spiritual option, but a spiritual obligation. So let us worship the Blood which the Savior shed for us on Calvary; it is the Blood which courses through the veins of His risen, glorified, living body at the right hand of God the Father in heaven; it is the Blood made present on our altars by the words of Consecration; it is the Blood which merited sanctifying grace for us and through it washes and beautifies our soul and inaugurates the beginning of eternal life in it. “It is a better thing to save souls for the Lord than to save treasures.”

– St. Ambrose

ASK DEACON JEFFAt ordination, why do the candidate for orders lie on the floor of the sanctuary? As the joys of Diaconate Ordination are still fresh, I thought that I would share with you all some of the unique liturgical and symbolic elements of the ordination Masses. First, I will begin with the common elements and, then, as priesthood ordination draws closer, I will discuss the unique elements of that ordination (along with other steps that we make leading up to the ordination). You may have noticed that those to be ordained lie prostrate on the sanctuary floor while the litany of Saints is sung. First, while lying prostrate, we face the altar and crucifix – we face Jesus Christ. This is very rarely done in liturgical settings – Good Friday and Ordinations. Thus, we see the connection of this action to sacrifice – the ordinands are humbling themselves and offering their lives to God. Also, just as Christ died on the Cross, descended, and rose from the Dead, the ordinand lies down to die to himself and rises a new man, a deacon or priest of Jesus Christ. Lastly, the whole congregation prays for these men and invokes the intercession of the Saints that the ordinands may be good and holy priests faithful to Jesus’ most Sacred Heart. Thanks and God Bless,Deacon Jeff StegbauerPlease continue to send in your questions to [email protected]!

– Pope Paul VI (HV 25)

SAINT OF THE WEEK

ST. LAWRENCE OF BRINDISISt. Lawrence was born in Brindisi, Italy, under the name Giulo Cesare Russo and entered the Franciscan Conventuals but later transferred to the Capuchins of Verona. He studied at Padua and was conversant in French, German, Greek, Syriac, and Hebrew. His ministry was preaching but because of his administrative qualities, he was successively Provincial of Tuscany, Venice, Switzerland, and Genoa. Due to his great facility with language and the Sacred Scriptures, he frequently dialogued with both Protestants and Jews. He considered his preaching to be an “apostolic duty” and preached in practically every country of eastern and western Europe. In 1601, he was sent by the emperor Rudolph II to solicit the aid of the German princes against the Turks, who were threatening to overrun Hungary. He not only obtained their support, but he road at the head of the troops as chaplain, armed only with the crucifix, and led them to victory at Szekesfehervar. From 1602 to 1605, he served as Superior General of the Capuchins. He established the Capuchins in Austria, Moravia, and the Tyrol. He died on his sixtieth birthday in Lisbon and was buried in the cemetery of the Poor Clares at Villafranca

RELIGIOUS EDUCATION NEWSSummer time provides evenings of opportunities to grow together in faith and family. For many of us, the bedtime hours can be delayed and the evening sky enjoyed. The night sky can provide the perfect backdrop for an evening Rosary. An inviting way to pray the Rosary as a family would be to use glow sticks and our outdoor nighttime landscape. Consider

using three colors of glow sticks, however two colors can work. One color to form the cross, a second color for the Our Father beads and the third color for the Hail Mary beads. Place your stakes in the ground outlining the rosary (Cross, Our Father, 3 Hail Mary, Our Father, 10 Hail Mary and repeat for a total of five decades). Glow sticks and ground stakes can be economically purchased at Dollar Tree, Walmart or online at Amazon. As a family, join together to create a living rosary. Have each child participate by snapping the glow stick and then leading in the Our Father and/or the Hail Mary prayer. This is a fun, tangible way to learn the rosary. Enjoy your summer nights and the peace of the rosary!

For more information, go to catholicicing.com/living-rosary-at-night-with-glow-sticks-for-kids/. For the Rosary prayers, go to usccb.org/prayer-and-worship/prayers-and-devotions/rosaries/how-to-pray-the-rosary.cfm.

We would love to share what the Holy Angels Church family is doing for their summer faith journey. Email us your pictures and information to [email protected] and let us share your summer journey on our Facebook page!
