The Origin of the sacrament
The sacrament was instituted by Christ
When the risen Lord appeared to His apostles on the evening of Easter and He said to them “Receive the Holy Spirit”
“If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”
WHAT
IS
Reconciliation?
It is a sacrament instituted by Christ in which forgiveness of sins comitted after baptism is granted through the priests absolution to those who are truly sorry to confess their sins.
is the method by which individual men and women may be freed from sins committed after receiving the sacrament of Baptism.
is an element of salvation that refers to the results of atonement.

WHY IS THERE A SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION AFTER BAPTISM?
Because Baptism does not abolish the weakness of human nature.
What is that weakness?
It is giving over to temptation, thus pushing us away from God’s graces

WHERE DO PREISTS GET THEIR POWER TO FORGIVE SIN?

said that "The Son of man has authority on earth to forgive sins“

THE RECIPIENT OF THE
SACRAMENT
The Sacrament of reconciliation can be received by any Baptized person, who after Baptism, has committed a grievous of venial sin.
The essential Elements of the Sacrament1. The Act of the
Penitent who comes to repentance through the action of the Holy Spirit.
2. The Absolution of the Priest in the name of Christ.
What should the penitent do in preparation and in receiving the sacrament?
1. Examination of
conscience
2. Repentance
3. Confession
4. Satisfaction
5. Penance
THE OUTWARD SIGN OF THE SACRAMENT OF PENANCETHE MATTER
The sacrament has two folds:
◦1. The acts of the penitent which includes contrition, confession and satisfaction
◦2. The act of the priest which is the absolution
THE FORM
The form is through the words of the priest when he absolves you from your sins
“I absolve you from your sins in the name of the Father and of the son and of the Holy Spirit.”
CONTRITION
Is the most important act of the penitent
It is the sincere sorrow of the soul and disgust for the sin committed and having the intention of not repeating the sin.
CONFESSION OF SINS
Through the admission of our sins we take full responsibility for them and there by we open ourselves again to God and to Holy communion.
THE SIN TO BE CONFESSED
1. Venial Sinso if one does something immoral but the
matter is not serious enough to be gravely immoral.
2. Capital Sinso also known as the seven deadly sinso Pride, avarice, envy, wrath, lust, gluttony,
and sloth.
3. Mortal Sinso object is grave matter and which is also
committed with full knowledge and deliberate consent.
SATISFACTION
The penitent must “make satisfaction for” or “expiate” his sins.
This “Satisfaction” is also called penanceThe penance corresponds to the gravity and
nature of the sins comitted.Penance comes in different forms it can be
in a form of a prayer, service, charity, an offering but above all the penitents acceptance of the cross he must bear.
ABSOLUTION
The remission of sin.Frees men from sins in the name of
the Holy Trinity.

THE EFFECTS WHEN RECEIVING THE SACRAMENT
