Martin Luther King Biography
Martin Luther King Junior was an African American peacemaker who believed in equal
opportunity for all races. He was born in Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday the 15

In the eleven-year period between 1957 and 1968, King travelled over six million miles andspoke over twenty-five hundred times, appearing wherever there was injustice, protest, and
action; and meanwhile he wrote five books as well as numerous articles. In these years, he
led a massive protest in Birmingham, Alabama, that caught the attention of the entire
world, providing what he called a coalition of conscience. and inspiring his "Letter from a
Birmingham Jail", a manifesto of the Negro revolution; he planned the drives in Alabama for
the registration of Negroes as voters; he directed the peaceful march on Washington, D.C.,
of 250,000 people to whom he delivered his address, "l Have a Dream", he conferred with
President John F. Kennedy and campaigned for President Lyndon B. Johnson; he was
arrested upwards of twenty times and assaulted at least four times; he was awarded five
honorary degrees; was named Man of the Year by Time magazine in 1963; and became not
only the symbolic leader of American blacks but also a world figure.
On the 4th

I Have A Dream
On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King made a speech that would potentially set all
African-Americans free from the segregation and oppression that they faced in society. Thespeech was preceded by a march through Washington and was made at the Lincoln
Memorial calling for racial equality and an end to discrimination.
Martin Luther King was the chief spokesperson for nonviolent activism and the civil rights
movement which successfully protested racial discrimination in federal and state law. In
both the march and the speech, Martin Luther King used words rather than violence in
order to get his point across.

The Deaths of Gandhi and Martin Luther King Martin Luther King Jr and Mohandas Gandhi were two men who both had a nonviolent
approach to achieving justice, equality and peace. Both these men had the ability to change
hearts and minds and people might not have believed in what they both stood up for. Theyhad their own opinions and have the courage to change society. Many people had differing
opinions to Gandhi and Martin Luther King. This is a possible explanation as to why they
were both assassinated and had such violent deaths. Martin Luther King’s and Mohandas
Gandhi’s lifestyle of speaking out for what they believe in and making things equal made
them susceptible to an early and violent deaths. Gandhi was assassinated by Nathuran
Godse on January 30, 1948. He was 39 years old. The conspiracy around Gandhi’s death
was that it was a misunderstanding. It was said that Godse thought Gandhi was harming the
Hindus by helping the Muslims, as well as Godse thinking that Gandhi was going to ruin
Hinduism. Gandhi was not doing this at all. Martin Luther King was assassinated by James
Earl Ray on April 23, 1967 while he was giving a speech in Memphis, Tennessee. MartinLuther King was shot dead while on the balcony of the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis,
Tennessee. Martin was there to try and help sanitation workers. An hour after the shot, he
did in St Joseph hospital. King’s killer was brought up in poverty, social-backward and a
stealing family. This could have been one of the reasons why Ray could have assassinated
Martin Luther King because he knew know better. Crime and alcohol was an important part
of Ray’s family life. James Earl Ray did some small time crimes and was extremely racist.
This is why people believe he shot Martin Luther King. Ray was sentenced to 99 years jail
following the death of Martin Luther King.

Pride by U2 – Graffiti Wall
One of the lyrics of the song says “Early morning, April 4 shot rings out in the Memphis sky”
which makes a reference to the death of Martin Luther King Jr. While this gives the idea that
the full song would be about Martin Luther King, it also can have relevance to the life of Jesus
and Gandhi through their work as well as how they lived. The song can also be interpreted as
a tribute somewhat to the soldiers who “die in the name of love”.

Personal Reflection Being a peacemaker in our society today can be extremely difficult. We would all like to
believe that we create peace in the world, but sometimes this is not always the case. We all
may believe that what we do is right and that we are perfect, but in reality, everyone has
their flaws and nobody can be absolutely perfect and peaceful all of the time. I would love
to say that I create every bit of peace in the world, but that isn’t the case. I try my hardest
not to condone or consider violence as a way of solving problems, rather than talking about
the issues.
