RELIEF OF THE EARTH

MOUNTAINS

Page 2: Relief of the Earth- Mountains and Valleys

The highest solid part of the Earth. They have sharp peak and narrow, deep valleys with a minimum of 2000 ft high.

Are many shapes and sizes and are arranged in many different combination.

Complex mountain -(faulting, folding, volcanic eruption and intrusion, dome formation)

B. Mountains of Combined origin

Page 10: Relief of the Earth- Mountains and Valleys

›Mountains are actually regions of horizontal structure that have been eroded or dissected (cut up)

›Monadnocks- Mountains originally been a part of an igneous intrusion or strongly disturbed rock mass.

›Isolated summits

C. Mountains Of Erosional Origin

LIFE HISTORY OF MOUNTAIN

Page 12: Relief of the Earth- Mountains and Valleys

› Lofty elevation

› Rugged , with irregular skyline and good scenery

› Steep slopes

› With young streams, narrow valleys, and deep ravines

› Frequent landslide, avalanches, and earthquakes.

YOUTH

Page 13: Relief of the Earth- Mountains and Valleys

The characteristics of mature mountain are:

› Elevation not very high

› Rounded tops well covered with vegetation

› Slopes gentle

› Streams flowing slowly and the valleys wide

› Avalanche and earthquakes rare

Maturity

Page 14: Relief of the Earth- Mountains and Valleys

› They are characterized by:

› Low elevation, and what is left of them is called a peneplain or penoplane, meaning almost level like a plain

› Sometimes a peneplain- low rolling hills with an occational high hill called monadnock.

› Rivers moving slowly the land being almost level

Old age

Page 15: Relief of the Earth- Mountains and Valleys

Is an extended depression in the Earth surface that is usually bounded by hills or mountains and is normally occupied by a river or stream.

VALLEY
