It is so uncomplicated, consisting of only one main strap to support the weight of the detector rather than the many straps that other harnesses use unnecessarily. Using it, once set to fit the wearer you instantly forget you even have it in place. On stopping to dig finds you have the option of quickly clipping your detector off and laying it down or leaving it in place which because the weight is supported keeps everything out of the dirt and wet.

The Steel Venom is a single seven-car (28-passenger) train runs along a 200 m (656 ft) U-shaped track, incorporating two 185-foot (56 m) vertical spikes. The forward spike incorporates a twisted spiral, and the rearward spike provides a straight freefall. The 20 m (65 ft) train, propelled by linear induction motors (LIMs,) is accelerated in less than four seconds to 68 mph (109 km/h) toward the forward tower before dropping back down through the station house and up the rearward tower. A holding brake is incorporated on the rear straight tower and is able to suspend the train momentarily (usually on the final ascent during each ride) before dropping it back down to the station house.Steel Venom was the first launched coaster at Valleyfair.

A guy down the road from me about a mile saw me detecting a field across from his house about 2 weeks ago.

I detected till dark and when I went to pack up, he stopped me and told me how he had his lost his wedding band in his backyard a year ago. He asked if anyway possible I could search for it for him. I said sure but it is dark now I will come back. Well I got busy with life, work, detecting etc….lol

Today I got off work early and headed down there, I knocked on his door and no answer, so I went ahead and started searching in his backyard, LUCKILY it was a fairly new home and it was a clean backyard, not a trashy old farm! First signal was a pulltab, and the very next signal was a 12-17, I was praying it was the ring, …..cut a plug, flipped it up and there it was staring back at me! His lost ring.

Took me UNDER 10 minutes total from the time I got to his house!

by Terry BarnhartLOST...

No one was home l so I left a note for him to call me. I brought the ring home, washed off the mud and shined it up, ....waiting on his call. I was excited to see how he would react when I hand it to him!

His wife got home first and called me. I explained to her I found the ring, she was estatic!!! I asked her to please NOT tell her husband. I wanted to surprise him, she told me she would text me when he got home.

FOUND...

A Wedding Band

and RETURNED!I drove down to his house and knocked

on the door. I told him that “I had come down earlier today to search for your ring, but I’ve got bad news for you, I couldn’t locate it”. He instantly said “it’s ok, I appreciate you trying for me”

Then I said, with as straight face as possible... “I did find one item that you might find interesting” and held out my hand. He reached his hand out and I dropped the wedding ring into his palm.....

His face lit up and he got the biggest smile ever. He was so happy!

I explained to him I had to tease him a bit before I gave it to him. His wife stood behind him and giggled. Great day, I was very happy to be able to find this for him, they were a young couple and it meant so much to both of them.

Recent FindsKenny Samson, Scotland Hi Jim, my name is Kenny and I live in Dundee. For as long as I can remember I’ve been interested in history. Roughly 18 months ago I bought myself a fairly inexpensive metal detector. I was excited and eager to get out and try it out; lucky for me I live only 10 minutes away from a large public park and woodland.

That first beep, beep, beep of anticipation and digging up two silver sixpences and other coins soon had me hooked and I found myself with a new and exciting hobby.

Being unemployed I’ve got time, weather permitting, to go out ‘diggin’… as

some friends and family mockingly call it.The first few weeks and months

produced a real mixture of finds, and I decided it was time to upgrade, so I sold my detector and some other bits and pieces lying around the house to be able to buy my new detector, a Garrett Ace 250.

I released this was going to be a serious ongoing hobby and that I was going to be out as much as possible, so had to obtain the proper permissions to go diggin on my site. After this was granted there was no stopping me. My finds were getting better too, Roman, Saxon and lots of medieval bits, my best and favourite pieces being my Wirral brooch and Bronze Age coins

I keep the site office in the park informed of my finds. They thought it might have been a good idea to let the museum see them and as I wanted to

Page 27: Relic Hunter Magazine may-june2013

Relic Hunter May - June 2013 27

know more about my finds I thought this was a good idea too.

My very unusual Wirral brooch (200AD) and my Bronze Age coins, which are of an unusual shape, are currently in the care of the treasure trove department in Edinburgh. They also have around 400 other separate bits and pieces I’ve found.

These include Roman coins, badges, and buckles of various ages and types, also, little clay dolls of about an inch in size, 18th 19th century buttons etc, too many to mention really. Treasure Trove has had these things since July 2012.

I’m waiting for them to visit my site too, as they seem interested in it. My finds are supposedly rare to be finding in Scotland.

As yet there hasn’t been any decisions made regarding my finds but they keep me informed of their progress. They have

been very helpful and I’ve learned loads of interesting historical facts from them. I’ve also got to know and meet like-minded people all over the world through social networking sites. This keeps my passion for the hobby alive.

I would like to thank the museum, Treasure trove, and the staff on my site and anybody else who has helped and encouraged me

Sue Patrick-Wise, USI finally found my first old OH silver coin..a 1916 Barber dime, in excellent condition last week in southern Columbus on a lot hunt. Few days later, hunting a friends yard in Knox Co..my fiance Patrick found our oldest wheatie yet..a 1918, along with a Shell gas commemorative token. Another old token popped up a few days ago in a field hunt along with more wheaties. Research on it showed the token was from the Dusquene brewery in Pittsburgh, it operated for the Independent Brewing Company from 1905-1933. After that it was simply known as Dusquene Brewing Co. until closing in the 1970’s. This Duke beer token, as it’s known as, is at least 80 years old. A short evening hunt Sat. night produced a .925 silver necklace and a .925 ring with a dolphin on it.

As I was putting this test report to paper (or to disk), the old

90’s dance club song with the catchy beat and the tagline that went “I’ve got

the power” popped into my head and I thought it was a fitting title for my review of the latest product from RNB Innovations.

Anyone that has spent even a little time in the field swinging a detector has likely found themselves searching a productive site and

suddenly watching the screen go blank bringing an end to what could have been a banner day. Recharging detector’s battery pack – much like backing up one’s computer on a regular basis – is something most of us know we need to do but tend

to forget about on occasion with unfortunate consequences. Not sure if it is Murphy’s Law in action but whenever I have had my battery go dead in the field (and yes, I’ll admit it has happened more than once), it is usually at a site miles from home and one where I have been making first-rate finds.

I have been using the battery system from RNB Innovations on my White’s MXT Pro for close to two years now and have nothing but praise for it. I had the opportunity to take it with me on a trip to Europe and since the voltage used there is different than what we have in the U.S., I picked up a converter before leaving that would handle the current draw of the charger. Well, thankfully I did not open the package so that I could return it when I came home as I did not need to recharge the pack the entire time I was out of the country. In fact, I hunted for another month when I got back before I saw a noticeable drop in battery voltage. Well, enough of my experience with a different RNB product, let’s take a look at the

ML-2900 system and what sets it apart from the factory-supplied pack.

When RNB Innovations looked at the battery systems used by virtually all the metal detector manufacturers, they saw technology that was dated and had in fact been replaced in many other industries. The older Ni-Cad packs had been replaced with NiMH batteries; however, the newest technology found in battery-powered tools, portable electronics and industrial applications was the Li-Ion battery. They weigh less, hold a charge for periods of a year or longer, do not develop a memory which allows them to be topped off at any time and can hold more power than a similarly-sized NiMH or Ni-Cad battery. After a considerable investment in R&D, RNB was able to manufacturer a complete battery system that was “drop-in ready” and provided a quantum leap in overall performance compared to the factory packs.

With having several Minelab FBS-based detectors, I found that the NiMH battery packs that had come with the detectors were no longer holding a charge as long as they had when they were new. If I was going to be out all day, I needed to ensure I had at least one extra battery pack with me since I knew that the first one would not make it more than 5 or 6 hours at best. Looking at getting a new pack, I was shocked to see the sticker price on the 1800 mAh NiMH pack from Minelab . . . . over $100! Based on my satisfaction with the Li-Ion pack for my MXT Pro, I checked with RNB and sure enough, they now offered a system for Minelabs and the price for the entire system was on-par with what Minelab was selling just the battery for. Another factor that weighed into my decision to go with the RNB system was the battery power rating . . . 2900 mAh versus the 1800 mAh rating on the pack from Minelab. More power simply means more hunting time between charges.

The box arrived soon after placing my order and in less than 2 hours, the battery was fully charged . . . another plus over the factory pack which takes hours to charge.

Due to the deadline for Relic Hunter Magazine going to press, I had only a limited amount of time to get out and use my E-Trac with the ML-2900; however, as with the AW-2200 system, I was truly amazed at how it performed.

Temperatures were in the 20’s (and lower at times) which as anyone that has hunted in below-freezing weather can attest to, causes NiMH batteries to drain down faster than normal. To put an additional current draw on the battery, I ran with the backlight on all the time. After three hunts for a total of about 8 hours, the battery was still indicating a full charge.

Curious to see just how long it would operate, I powered up the E-Trac and placed it on the dining room table with the backlight on around 5PM. Whenever I would walk past it, I would wave something metallic past the coil. Getting up the next morning for work, the E-Trac was still on and showing 3/4 full on the battery strength indicator.

I got home at 4PM and it was still on . . . . and it remained on until I checked around 8PM when it had finally turned off. The battery had powered the E-Trac for better than 30 hours with more than 24 hours of that being non-stop operation! Plugging the pack in to the Smart Charger that comes with the package, it was fully recharged in less than 2 hours . . . . ready to go again.

With the number of Minelab FBS detectors in the field that have battery packs reaching the end of their lifespan, replacing them with something will be a requirement for many owners and if you are going to spend the money for a new

pack, why not get one that is light years ahead of what originally came with the detector. RNB Innovations gives you state-of-the-art technology today that will power your detector for years to come.

The complete ML-2900 system for Minelab Detectors (Explorer series, E-Trac, Quattro and Safari) lists for $129.99 (USD) which includes the unique Li-Ion battery pack and the Smart Charger for home use. An Auto Smart Charger is an available option.

As I mentioned, RNB offers a battery that fits many of the current detectors from White’s Electronics as well. They are working on designing packs for other detectors so even if you do not own a White’s or Minelab, bookmark their website to see if they release one for your detector.

As I said in my review of the AW-220 system for White’s detectors, a battery pack may not be the most glamorous of accessories; however, not having to worry about your batteries going dead and spoiling a day of hunting or having to purchase a replacement battery pack from the factory for about the same price that provides far less performance makes RNB Innovations battery systems a “must-have” item for all detectorists.

For more information on the ML-2900 system in the USA as well as other packs that are under development, visit RNB Innovation’s website at www.rnb-innovations.com. Also check out Detectorbits website in the UK for European deals at www.detectorbits.co.uk

Stay tuned for a more in-depth assessment of the ML-2900 system in the coming issues . . . .
