Release Notes for the GSS 2014 Merged Data, Release 1

May 29, 2015

About This Data File

This data file has all cases and variables asked in GSS 2014. There are a total of 3,842 cases in

GSS 2014 but their initial sampling years vary because panel cases are included. The cross-

section cases sampled in 2014 and related variables were already released, but the panel cases

and the variables not asked of the cross-section cases are being released for the first time. This

file has merged those cross-section cases and variables in GSS 2014 with the panel cases and

some additional variables not previously released. The original sample years can be identified

using the variable SAMPTYPE.

SAMPTYPE Description Number of cases

Previous release

2014 Cross-section cases newly interviewed in 2014 2,538 GSS Cumulative Data, 1972-2014

2010 Panel cases originally interviewed in 2010 1,304 None

Weight Variables

WTCOMB: weight for both cross-section and the panel cases combined, adjusted to the

2014 sampling

WTCOMBNR: weight for both cross-section and the panel cases combined, accounting

for non-respondents

One of these variables need to be used when analyzing the merged data.

New Variables in This File

The following variables are available for the 2014 panel cases in addition to those variables

already released as part of the 1972-2014 cumulative data file. EQWLTH and INCGAP are the

only variables that have been asked in previous GSS and they are already included in the

cumulative data. All other variables are newly introduced in the 2014 panel data, and they have

never been asked in the GSS before. The question wordings of the new variables may be found

in the 2014 panel questionnaires on the website.
