Cisco UCS C-Series and Cisco UCS Manager Release Compatibility Matrix forC-Series Rack-Mount Servers

Cisco UCS C-Series Rack-Mount Servers are managed by built-in standalone software— Cisco IntegratedManagement Controller (Cisco IMC). However, when a C-Series Rack-Mount Server is integrated with CiscoUCS Manager, the Cisco IMC does not manage the server anymore.

The following table lists the C-Series software standalone and Cisco UCS Manager releases for C-SeriesRack-Mount Servers:

Unified Computing System (UCS)Utilities

Always upgrade the BIOS, the Cisco IMC and CMC from the HUU ISO. Do not upgrade individualcomponents (only BIOS or only Cisco IMC or CMC), since this could lead to unexpected behavior. Ifyou choose to upgrade BIOS, the Cisco IMC and the CMC individually and not from the HUU ISO, makesure to upgrade both Cisco IMC, BIOS and CMC to the same container release. If the BIOS, CMC andthe Cisco IMC versions are from different container releases, it could result in unexpected behavior. Ciscorecommends that you use the Update All option from the Host Upgrade Utility to update the firmwareversions of Cisco IMC, BIOS, CMC and all other server components (VIC, RAIDControllers, PCI devices, and LOM) together.

Note

Host Upgrade UtilityThe Cisco Host Upgrade Utility (HUU) is a tool that upgrades the Cisco UCS C-Series firmware.

The image file for the firmware is embedded in the ISO. The utility displays a menu that allows you to choosewhich firmware components to upgrade. For more information on this utility see:

http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/ps10493/products_user_guide_list.html

For details of firmware files in Cisco Host Upgrade Utility for individual releases, see Cisco UCS C-SeriesIntegrated Management Controller Firmware Files, Release 3.1

Updating the FirmwareUse the Host Upgrade Utility to upgrade the C-Series firmware. Host Upgrade Utility can upgrade the followingsoftware components:

• BIOS

• Cisco IMC

• CMC

• SIOC

• Cisco VIC Adapters

• LSI Adapters

• LAN on Motherboard Settings

• PCIe adapter firmware

• HDD firmware

• SAS Expander firmware

All firmware should be upgraded together to ensure proper operation of your server.

We recommend that you use the Update All option from the Host Upgrade Utility to update the firmwareversions of Cisco IMC, BIOS and all other server components (VIC, RAID Controllers, PCI devices, andLOM) together. Click Exit once you deploy the firmware.

Note

For more information on how to upgrade the firmware using the utility, see:

Supported Features

Supported Software FeaturesThe following new software features are supported in Release 3.0(2):

• KeyManagement Interoperability Protocol— Support for KeyManagement Interoperability Protocol(KMIP). KMIP is a communication protocol that defines message formats to handle keys or classifieddata on a key management server. KMIP is an open standard and is supported by several vendors. Keymanagement involves multiple interoperable implementations, so a KMIP client works effectively withany KMIP server.

Self-Encrypting Drives(SEDs) contain hardware that encrypts incoming data and decrypts outgoing data inrealtime. A drive or media encryption key controls this function. However, the drives need to be locked inorder to maintain security. A security key identifier and a security key (key encryption key) help achieve thisgoal. The key identifier provides a unique ID to the drive.

Different keys have different usage requirements. Currently, the responsibility of managing and tracking localkeys lies primarily with the user, which could result in human error. The user needs to remember the differentkeys and their functions, which could prove to be a challenge. KMIP addresses this area of concern to managethe keys effectively without human involvement.

Software UtilitiesThe following standard utilities are available:

• Host Update Utility (HUU)

• BIOS and Cisco IMC Firmware Update utilities

• Server Configuration Utility (SCU)

• Server Diagnostic Utility (SDU)

The utilities features are as follows:

• Availability of HUU, SCU on the USB as bootable images. The USB also contains driver ISO, and canbe accessed from the host operating system.

The Boot Order fieldaccepts a value or 0 or 1, which indicates thepresence of multiple controllers. However, currently, you are unable to modify or entera value in the field.

This happens when you upgrade fromprevious releases such as release 2.0(10) or2.0(13).

While updating the firmware componentsusing Non Interactive HUU, the update mayfail with the error message - Firmwareupdate failed for CIMC, Error- Operation failed. Thecurrent operation failed. CIMCmay be running any criticaloperation or in error state.Retry after sometime or rebootCIMC if necessary.

This happens because of an incompletefirmware update triggered previously.

2.0(13e)Use Port 1 for thelegacy iSCSIboot with theX710-DA2 PCIcard and disablethe Option ROMfor the rest of theslots and theLOMs.

The Intel Ethernet Converged Network AdapterX710-DA2 PCI Card is unable to launch the legacyiSCSI option ROM for Port 2. You can view this bysearching the SEL log for the warning message:Not enough memory available to shadowa legacy option ROM.

This happens when the system is configured for legacyboot, and the Intel Ethernet Converged NetworkAdapter X710-DA2 PCI Card is configured to theiSCSI boot. The card consumes extra runtime OptionROM memory space, and is able to load the OptionROM for only Port 1. Once the Option ROM for Port1 is loaded, the remaining available Option ROMmemory space is insufficient to load the Option ROMfor Port 2.

2.0(4c)There is no work-aroundat this time. This is just adisplay issue and does notimpact the actualfunctionality or dataintegrity.

Cisco IMC storage BBUinfo shows the PackEnergy value below thedesign capacity. This isalso seen in the storcli/cX /cv show allcommand. On the currentshipping 6G SAS RAIDControllers withSupercap, the Packenergy is always abovethe design capacity. Thisis a change in behaviorconfuses the user andmakes the user think thesupercap has or is goingbad and gets a worrisomesituation of the dataintegrity.
