Communication – the process of sharing information, thoughts, or feelings. How do we communicate?

1. “I” Messages

1. “I” Messages – A statement of feelings and expectations that does not blame or judge the other person.

Instead of angering someone, you could open the lines of communication.

2. Active Listening

Definition – Focusing your full attention on what the other person is saying and, at the same time, letting that person know you understand and care.

Ways to be an active listener Show your interest by nodding your head

and showing concern on your face Encourage the speaker to begin by saying

“Do you want to talk about it?” While the speaker is talking, offer comments

such as “I know what you mean.” Avoid passing judgment on what the speaker

says. Do not steer the conversation away from the

speakers problem and onto your own.

3. Assertiveness

Expressing your true feelings in a way that does not threaten the other person or make you feel anxious.

A way of communicating information or feelings nonverbally, through body movements, posture, gestures, and facial expressions. Eye contact

Cooperation / Compromise

Cooperation - Working together for a common goal.

Compromise – the willingness of each person to give up something in order to reach an agreement.
