Other News and Developments

2016 FEMP Award Winner

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) was recognized as a 2016 Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) Award winner. FEMP Awards recognize individuals, groups, and organizations for significant contributions to energy and water efficiency within the federal government. Additionally, projects related to renewable energy implementation, sustainable practices, and transportation management are also recognized. JPL, together with CEG Solutions, LLC, was recognized for successfully executing an energy savings performance contract that included upgrades to 120 buildings, resulting in annual savings of 47 billion Btu of energy, 18 million gallons of water, and almost $1.2 million in costs.

NASA CYGNSS Satellite Mission Update

On 15 December 2016, NASA announced the successful launch of the Cyclone Global Navigation Satellite System (CYGNSS) mission. The collaborative venture with the Southwest Research Institute and University of Michigan deployed eight microsatellites to capture detailed measurements in and near the inner core of tropical weather systems. All eight of the launched satellites have been contacted successfully and declared operational. The mission soon will move to the engineering phase and begin collecting scientific data. NASA's Earth Observatory website provides updates regarding the mission.

IRIS Updates

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recently published the final Integrated Risk Information System (IRIS) assessment for ethylene oxide. IRIS is a human health assessment program that evaluates information about the potential health effects associated with exposure to various chemicals found in the environment.

Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements Webinar

As part of the ongoing seminars on the Contaminated Site Clean-Up Information (CLU-IN) resource initiative, EPA will host a webinar on 09 January 2017 to discuss the recent provisions of EPA's final rule Hazardous Waste Generator Improvements. The updated provisions are effective 30 May 2017 and include significant revisions to existing Resource Conservation and Recovery Act hazardous waste program regulations. Registration is required for attendance and available through EPA's CLU-IN website.

GoLIVE Ice Observing Project

On 12 December 2016, NASA announced the Global Land Ice Velocity Extraction (GoLIVE) project, a collaborative effort with the United States Geological Survey to use imagery and data from the LandSat8 satellite to track the movement of glaciers and ice sheets across the globe in close to real-time. The data collected by the satellite is expected to help determine the conditions that cause ice sheets to change, more accurately predict when sudden changes to glaciers or ice sheets may occur, and provide insight into the potential impacts to coastal communities from rising oceans.

National Action Plan for Freshwater Update

The Interagency Water Resources and Climate Change Workgroup recently released the report, "Looking Forward: Priorities for Managing Freshwater Resources in a Changing Climate," which addresses ways to mitigate risks to water resources. The report updates the 2011 National Action Plan, the goal of which is to increase preparedness to extreme weather events through advances in the following water resource areas: data and research, planning and decision support, and training and outreach.

AWRA Water Resources Symposium

On 07 April 2017, the National Capital Region (NCR) section of the American Water Resources Association (AWRA) will host the 2017 NCR Water Resources Symposium in Washington, D.C. The conference invites water professionals from various backgrounds to share knowledge and experiences in water research, technology, management, and regulation. Registration is available through NCR's website.

International Conference on Water Reclamation and Reuse

From 23 July 2017 through 27 July 2017, the International Water Association (IWA) will host the 11th IWA International Conference on Water Reclamation and Reuse in Long Beach, California.

The conference aims to provide a venue for professionals to share knowledge and experience with various water reclamation and reuse projects, technologies, and services. The prolonged California drought will be highlighted as a case study, with a focus on the increasing challenges and advantages of water reclamation and reuse. Registration is available through IWA's website.

NIST Polymer-Based AM Roadmap

On 12 December 2016, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) announced the release of the Measurement Science Roadmap for Polymer-Based Additive Manufacturing (AM), which outlines current and future AM application capabilities, scientific challenges, and the required research and development necessary to further advance polymer-based AM technology and assist with standards development. AM is currently used to produce metal-based parts in the aircraft, automotive, and manufacturing industries by referencing a 3-D digital model to build parts one layer at a time with high precision and complexity.
