Notes for Joel Appling:General Notes:Pauline Jones Gandrud's Tuscaloosa County AL data ("Alabama Records", Vol. 47, pg. 4) shows an undated probate paper for Joel Appling's estate that lists heirs, including "JOHN APPLING's heirs, he being dead: CHARLES and AUGUSTUS, under age; MARY FRANCES, who married WILLIAM EDMONDS; SARAH who married JAMES BAKER..". John Appling is identified as deceased in other probate lists as well. The lists were filed with other papers in 1843, 1846, or 1853. John's death is therefore between 1840 and 1843 (more likely) or between 1840 and 1846 (less likely).

John Appling is identified as deceased in other probate lists as well. The lists were filed with other papers in 1843, 1846, or 1853. John #1 and George were brothers. John #2 was son of George. This John would have been only 14 when he first joined the war. It was not unusual to have a boy of 14 run off to war.

THE BATTLE OF GLORIETA PASS, NEW MEXICO (called the Gettysberg of the West)Following is an excerp from an essay:"We Spied the Abs Coming"by Charles Bennett

Elias R. Boles was a nineteen-year-old third corporal in Company D of the 4th Regiment Texas Mounted Volunteers when he fought in the Battle of Valverde, the first major Civil War engagement in the Southwest.

Boles's company, originally called The San Andres Light Horse Company, was raised in Milum County, Texas, by Charles Marion Lesueur, who become a captain of the company. The unit, composed of men from Milam County as well as neighboring Williamson County, was enrolled on September 7, 186 1, in Milam County. It was mustered into Confederate service for the war nine days later at Camp Sibley, near San Antonio, as Company D, 4th Regiment Texas Mounted Volunteers. Company D took part in the battles of Valverde and Glorieta and the skirmish at Peralta. Of the eighty-nine men on the company roll, three were medically discharged, two joined the Regimental Artillery, and one who transferred in was promoted to regimental sergeant major prior to the march to New Mexico. One trooper was left behind sick at Fort Bliss and later died, leaving eighty-two soldiers in the company for the invasion. During the campaign, one man died of disease, eight were killed (three at Valverde and five at Glorieta), eight were wounded (two at Valverde and six at Glorieta), and eleven were taken prisoner, including four of those wounded at Glorieta. Two men died of disease at the and of the campaign. With the return of the two men f rom the Regimental Artillery, Company D arrived back in Son Antonio following the Now Mexico campaign with sixty-two men fit for duty. Elias Boles was one of these. END EXCERP

In 1989, on the Glorieta Battlefield the common grave of 30 Confederate enlisted soldiers was discovered. Also, the grave of Maj Shropshire was found -- his grave was located immediately adjacent to the common 30-man grave. The remains of these men (Maj Shropshire excepted) were reburied at the Santa Fe (New Mexico) National Cemetery in 1993. Maj Shropshire was reburied in KY.

My personal comments:I also obtained copies of the official records, but they were sparse and the name was often misspelled (Aflin, Alplin, Aplin, Applin, Appling) so it was hard to tell who was who. The fact that John was listed sometimes as 25 and sometimes as 45 helps to indicate which John was recorded under what regt. We think that John at 45 would have been John#1, brother to George, and that the John listed as 25 would have been John#2 (John Marion Applin, son of George) who was really only 14-15 years of age. He was tall and lanky, so we think he just lied about his age. The Confederate Army really didn't care who they got as long as it was a living body. They took every volunteer they could get, especially toward the end of the war. I do have papers for Confederate Widows Pension where they researched and found John#2 Marion Applin was indeed in company D, so I know he was one of the John's listed in the records. The widows of the other 2 individuals died before the Pension law was passed, so they did not apply.

It is confusing because sometimes they are listed as in volunteer service(TST) and sometimes in enlisted regiments. I have been told that this was the common practice then. First the group would be organized and later would become truly enlisted as the group was called into duty. You should note that Sibley's Brigade and its New Mexico Campaign is famous. It involved some serious battles and very few men returned. You might wish to research Sibley's Brigade on the Internet. We think that the John that went to NM was probably the older John#2. Hazel Mobley stated that she remembers hearing of a family

iii. Sarah A. "Sadie" Brown was born on 29 Mar 1895 in Jasper, TX, Jasper County. She married Lee Cisero Applin on 28 May 1913 in Sharp, TX, Milam County. She died on 12 Apr 1932 in Baileyboro, TX Bailey County - Food poisoning.

Notes for Sarah A. "Sadie" Brown:General Notes:Apparently, Sadie (or "sada" as they would pronounce it in Texas) is a short form of Sarah.

Volume 13-332 records marriage date of 6-1-1913.

Sada(Sadie) was one of three Brown children (John, Charley, and Sadie) who married 3 Applin children (Lee, Mary Ann/Annie, and Maggie Josephine/Josie). They were first cousins, having the same grandfather, George Applin. Their father was French. It is thought that they were orphaned at an early age. Information on their parents is sparse.

In the 1920 census, Sadie was 24, making her born about 1886. She was born in Texas.

Statements from Verna Lee Applin, her daughter:"I only remember my mother at a very young age since I was only 9 when she died. Sadie died of food poisoning 4-12-1932. The story is that Sadie, and others at that time, were trying a new method of "canning" using cans rather than jars. This proved to be fatal for some. Sadie was apparently tasting food as she was preparing dinner. The home-canned corn contained botulism, which immediately made her sick. This prevented others in the family from becoming ill. My Dad never forgave the doctor who attended Sadie that night. The doctor was known as a drunk and he was apparently drunk when he tried to look after Sadie. Her death certificate contains evidence of this, as he was apparently so drunk he made a mess of the information. The certificate shows he scribbled over another woman's certificate and put information in wrong. He put Lee Applin in the area marked for Sadie's father, etc.

Mother was a very hard working woman, very kind, but could be strict when disobeyed. I remember my adopted sister, Luella, and I trying to keep Jack, Luella's brother, from entering a room through a window. My mother had told us to stop and we disobeyed. I was pushed through the window and cut my back. However, that didn't keep me from getting the strap along with Jack and Luella.

Another time I remember coyotes were trying to get the chickens out of the

chicken house. Mom took the shotgun and went banging at them. I still don't know if she killed a coyote or some of the chickens. Since my father was sick (gallbladder), she did all of the planting of cotton, maize, and corn. She also rode the cultivator that was pulled by a team of horses. We all picked cotton and cut the maize with a "hook bill" knife, then threw it onto the wagon that the horses pulled. I still have a scar on my thumb I received from a "hook bill" knife when I was carving something to shoot rocks with (a sling shot).

When mother had a bit to rest, she sat in a rocking chair and her dog "Brown Skinner" would jump in her lap. She loved to pet him. After she died, the dog walked through the house continually searching for her. He wouldn't eat and he eventually grieved himself to death.

She had long dark hair and I loved to watch her wash it - it was beautiful as it gleamed in the sunlight while she brushed and dried it. She always canned fruit and vegetables for us. I remember going to church in a wagon. I must have been real young. Later Dad drove a school bus and owned a Model T. Mother milked several cows. We separated the milk and sold the cream to buy groceries. She also raised baby turkeys. She treated them like babies. She was gentle and kind, and loving. She was really one of a kind."

1900 census, Milam County, dwelling 71, family 71, Justice Precinct 5, dated 6-5-1900, microfilm from Austin Nat'l Archives or Dallas library viewed April 1999, shows John age 53 married 11 yrs, married to Mattie age 38, mother to 7 with 5 living. Also living in the home were, George 18, Sarah 16, Litner 13, Lee 10, Annie 9, Mandy 5, and Julia 3.

Milam County Voters Registration 1867-1869 shows a John Applin native of Arkansas, voter #175, July 5, 1867(this could be George's brother and uncle to John Marion Applin), and J.M. Applin native of Texas, voter #1336, Nov 22, 1869.

All reports from those who knew him are uncomplimentary. He was married twice. The first marriage produced 8 children, the 2nd produced 9.

Statements from Verna Lee Applin, his granddaughter:"I know very little about my grandfather as he died before I was born. He was constable in Milam County. I was told that he and his brother, George, bought land at Lilac, TX. George later sold his land to John. I do not know how much land total. At a later date it was divided and that is where Lee got his 80 acres (through inheritance). I was told by my father, Lee Applin, and by Dan Applin (another son) that John was quite a womanizer, to put it nicely. Lee and Dan Applin, did not care much for their father, John."

LAND OWNERSHIP:

Contrary to earlier beliefs, the land that was shared by John and Mattie, and later by their heirs, was not originally from George and his brother John. See explanations to follow:

The land deed descriptions are as follows:George Applin to John Applin - 165 1/2 acres - J.J. Acosta SurveyVol A-2-Page 537Tas T. Clay et al to Geo and John Applin 325 acres - J.J. Acots, surveyVol A-2-page 535W.D. Huffman et us to John M Applin - 60 acres C. CroneaVol 12 page 228

May 12, 1856, George Applin (born abt. 1825) and John J. Applin (born 1818-1820) bought 325 acres Milam land from Clay Fiskel, Heickell, and Burtow for $650.

July 25, 1863, George Applin (born abt. 1825) sold his portion of the land to John J. Applin (born 1818-1820), 162 Ω acres for $325. This was during the Civil War and is the last known about George. He is recorded to have "died of disease" during the war. It could be that he knew he was dying and signed his property over to his brother, John.

December 21, 1883, John M. Applin bought 160 acres + 160 acres + 60 acres = total of 380 acres for $700 from W.D. Huffman.

January 24, 1880, John J. and Nancy Applin sold their 325 acres to Richard Hunt for $1000. This is the land George sold to John in 1863.

December 5, 1890, John M. Applin filed for community administration of land jointly owned with deceased wife Elisabeth (probate).

After Mattie's death, the estate of John M. and Mattie D. Applin was settled.

NOTES PER RUTH MICKELSON:John Applin was a Confederate Soldier during the Civil War and served for four years in Company D, 4th Texas Cavalry (See additional notes regarding Texas Statehood below). Following the Civil War, John was a Constable and farmer. As constable, he would transport prisoners, etc., but really didn't do much in the way of actual law enforcement. John died August 29, 1920 in Buckholts, Texas, Milam County, at age 73. He had fractures and a concussion obtained from being hit by a car on August 15, 1920 at 7pm. Contributory was his age and "Cardia Deficiency." At the time of his death, John and Mattie's residence was Route 1, Buckholts, Texas. His body was interred August 30, 1920 in Cameron, Texas, Milam County, Lilac Cemetery.

TEXAS STATEHOODThe Republic of Texas lasted from 1836 to 1845. The United States annexed Texas in 1845, making it the 28th State. The following year, Mexico declared war on the United States in an effort to reclaim Texas and other territories. Over 6,000 Texans fought against Mexico during the war. Mexico was defeated and gave up its claim to Texas. In 1850, Texas gave up its claims to Colorado, Wyoming, Kansas, and Oklahoma. In 1861, Texas seceded from the Union. During the Civil War, some 60,000 Texans fought for the Confederacy and only about 1,200 for the Union. Texas was readmitted to the Union in 1870. (Taken from "Handy Book for Genealogists", Everton publishers, 8th Edition.)

Sharp, Texas was named after Dr. William Franklin Sharp.

LILAC(Researched by Mrs. H. L. Summero)

Lilac, a farming and stock raising community of northwest Milam County, is fifteen miles northwest of Rockdale. The community of Lilac grew out of the plantation and cattle raising operation of Frederick Agustus Graves, an early day settler in northwest Milam County. He was born May 17, 1847, and settled there as a young man. So far as can be determined Lilac commenced about 1867, and was known as Oak Point until a post office was established. There was another Oak Point so the name was changed to Lilac. At one time the plantation was a self sustaining operation with a cotton gin, mill, blacksmith shop, brick kiln, grocery store, doctor and dentist offices, a school, a church and a cemetery. Justice Court was held there and a very active Woodmen of the World Chapter met in the old hall above the grocery store.

Later, Fred A. Graves moved to Rockdale. His son, Rufus Winton, remained in the Lilac community continuing in the cattle raising business until his death in 1965.

Thomas Graves, brother of Fred A. Graves, lived in the community and reared his family there. He and his sons, Paul and Henry, were all very active in cattle raising and farming. Mr. Thomas Graves is buried in the Lilac Cemetery.

On Dec. 9, 1884, Fred A. Graves deeded to Milam County one acre of land for a public school. (Court Records-Milam County Book 19-Page 352)

One acre of land was deeded by S. T. Rister in 1887 for a Baptist (:hurch and a cemetery at Lilac. (Court Records-Milam County Book 164-Page 1)

Notes for John Dinkins Applin:General Notes:Per Ruthie Mickelson:John Dinkin's date was abstracted from the census record as an "about" date.He was listed as age 7 in the 1880 census, dated June 21, 1880.

iii. Mollie G. Applin was born on 21 Sep 1876. She died on 18 Aug 1900 in Milam County, Lilac Cemetery -- 23 years old. She married James Henry Lovett in Milam County, Texas.

Notes for Mollie G. Applin:General Notes:Molly must have died shortly after her marriage to James H. Lovett. She was listed as a newlywed for the 1900 census in April of that year. Her husband, James, was born in Texas in March 1878. Her middle name was "Green."

iv. Samuel Applin was born on 31 Jan 1878. He died on 03 Mar 1878 in infant death.

Notes for George Jefferson Applin:General Notes:George was a cowboy/farmhand and rodeo rider. He was enumerated in the 1910 census at the age of 28, with a T.A. Morgan family. George was illiterate according to Bettie, but according to the 1900 census, he was listed as being able to read, write, and speak English. He had brothers and sisters, but some died at birth (RH factor?) and are buried at Lilac Cemetery, Sharp, Texas. George died just a few months before his daughter, Odell, was born.

Martha "Mattie" Drucilla Wilson daughter of Early L.C. Wilson Aka Easley Wilson and Narcissa aka Narcisra aka Narcissus Lee was born between 01-15 Jan 1862 in Troy, Alabama, Pike County. She died on 24 May 1926 in Sharp, TX, Milam County - heart-vol 2 pg 64 cert#10319.

Notes for Martha "Mattie" Drucilla Wilson:General Notes:The 1880 census of Coryell County, Texas page 7, dwelling 62, ED 23-25, dated 6-25-1880, shows Martha D. (Mattie), age 18, living with parents. Her Father was born in Georgia and her Mother in South Carolina. The census also indicated a brother Joel W., age 12, and a sister Georgia E., age 9. This information was seen on microfilm reel 1298 at either the Dallas library or the Austin State Archives in April 1999. Georgia later married Jefferson Applin, brother to Mattie's husband, John Marion Applin. Note: Apparently, the name Mattie is a short form of Martha.

The 1920 Census shows residence is Justice Precinct 5, Milam, TX. Children still at home were Jessie and Dan Applin.

Per Ruth Mickelson, Mattie and family moved to Coryell County when she was 16. She lived there 10 years before she married and moved to Sharp, Texas. She remained in Sharp until her death (from Lilac Paper Obituary). Certificate of Physician, W.H. Lyon, MD, who attended Mattie at time of death, stated cause as: Mitral regurgitant murmer, cardiac hypertrophy with decompensation.

Per Mattie's obituary, she was a member in good standing at the Baptist Church in Lilac, TX as of 7-28-1914.

At age 27, she married John, who already had 8 children from his previous marriage. The children ranged in age from 2 to 16. She produced 9 children from this marriage, while raising the children from John's first marriage. Two of the births resulted in infant death. She was said to be an expert on children (It's no wonder why) and people would ask her help with problems they might have with their own children. It is said that all of Mattie's daughters and daughters-in-law would come home to be with her as they neared the end of their pregnancies. Mattie apparently served as a midwife in the area. It is said she delivered all of her grandchildren, including both Verna and Ira Arthur.

Per statements from Verna Lee Applin, granddaughter:"I know very little about my grandmother as she died when I was 3 1/2 years old. I do remember going to Lilac or Sharp on a train with my father when I was very young. It may have been for her funeral, for I would have been about 4 when she died. I was always told that when there was a sick baby in the community, the parents always contacted Mattie Applin. They say she was better than most doctors with babies."

Per statements from those who knew her, Mattie called herself "Black Dutch." A note from Ruth Mickelsen states" Because most Indians were moved to the Indian Territory in Oklahoma during the 1870's, Mattie considered herself (according to Ruth Applin) to be "Black Dutch" when asked about her descent. Investigation of the term gives us the following: The term "Black Dutch" is used to refer to one that has Indian Blood, and most particularly with CREEK Indian blood. The term was later used by both Creek and Cherokee Indian/White decendants to disguise, or cover, their Indian heritage. ("Cherokee by Blood" Internet reference)

Per Notes from Ruth Mickelson:On April 15, 1924, Mattie applied for a widow's Confederate pension (Widow's Application for Pension, No. 39840) after the death of her husband. R. Todd and P.S. Graves were credible witnesses and swore that Mattie had not remarried since the death of her husband. Further affidavits state that Mattie was charged on the tax rolls with a homestead valued at

The Adjutant General's Office of Washington, D.C. returned the following information on April 18, 1924, to Jeff T. Kemp, county Judge, Cameron, Texas:

The records show that John Applin (Also borne as John J. Applin), pvt., Co. D, 4th Regt., Texas Cav. C.S.A., enlisted September 8, 1861 in Milam County, age 25 years. The last roll of the company on file, which covers period Nov 1, 1863 to Feb. 29, 1964, reports him "absent sick since January 12, 1864." No later record of him has been found.

The name J.M. Appline, Capt. Wilson's Company, Bean's Battallion Texas reserve Corps, appears on a copy of a LIST of young men of Major Bean's Battalion, Texas Reserve Corps, who are absent without leave and have joined the regular service. The list is dated April 1865 and bears the following remark: "County Milam. Gone to Col. Ford's Old Command." No other record of him has been found. Signed Benjamin Alvord, Acting Adjutant general.

Census records show the John Applin family residing in Buckholts, TX at Rockdale and Davilla Road. According to Hazel Mobley, John and Mattie's home in Lilac/Sharp, TX was destroyed by storm damage.

John Marian Applin and Martha "Mattie" Drucilla Wilson were married on 06 Sep 1888 in Gatesville, TX, Coryell County. They had the following children:

i. Lee Cisero Applin was born on 21 Aug 1889 in Sharp, TX, Milam County. He married Rena (Ranie) Evely Nelson on 06 Mar 1910 in Volume 12-30. He died on 03 Aug 1970 in Bangs TX, Brown County - Pneumonia.

Notes for Lee Cisero Applin:General Notes:He was married 3 times. The 1st wife was Ranie Nelson, born 3-16-1893. There was one child from this marriage, Annie Lee Applin, born 1-30-1911. Annie married named Percy Ledwell.

The 2nd marriage was to Sadie Brown. They had three boys who all died at birth, or as infants. Ruth (Dan Applin's daughter) said the graveyards are full of babies around there (no names or dates) belonging to the Applin family. It seems there was an RH factor problem or something (unknown at that time). It was probably due to the fact that Lee and Sadie were first cousins.

Sadie and Lee then adopted two children, Luella and Jack Lemmon. Verna Lee Applin was then born. Sadie died of food poisoning on 4-12-1932. After her death, Luella and Jack were raised by other relatives. Lee took Verna to live with his sisters for awhile.

The 3rd marriage was to Winnie Harris. Lee and Winnie had 4 children: Lottie, Mary Dean, Margaret, and Jane Applin.

Ruth Mickelson shows Lee was married around 1910 to Ranie (via census information). She shows he married Sadie around 1913 and she died 1932. He then married Winnie Harris 12 July 1933. She also shows other info such as: "Lee evidently never attended school. He was a manual laborer and moved his family to Morenci, Arizona about 1946 where he worked in a copper mine for about 20 years."

as wife and Charlie J. Brown as hand/laborer (Charlie J. Brown was one of Sadie's brothers.)

Information from Applin Bible owned by Margaret Ann Applin, shows that Ranie was born 3-16-1893 and married Lee Applin 3-6-1910.

Information from Verna Lee Applin :"When I first rememer my father, he was sick with gallbladder problems. Doctors repeatedly drained it and finally removed it. In those days, it was a big surgery to do. After my mother died, Dad went to pieces and we went to live with his sister Julia for awhile. My father began to drink too much in mourning for the loss his wife and the 3 sons who died as babies. Then my dad met Winnie Harris and he stopped drinking. After my dad married my stepmother, Winnie, we picked cotton to buy groceries. Later we moved to Progress, Texas, and I helped pick and chop cotton. My first half-sister, Lottie, was born and Dad got a truck and started working on the road. Those were the "Hard 1930's", so things were tough. We moved to Sharp, TX in Milam County where we worked the 80 acres Dad had received as inheritance from his father, John Marion Applin. Later, he moved to Progress, TX (where he picked cotton), Baileyboro (where he was living when his mother, Mattie, died on 5-24-1926), and Arden, TX. where I finished high school. Dad, as always, did all he could to make a living for us. My father basically did anything and everything to support his family. After I married, he moved his family (wife #3 Winnie Harris and their remaining 4 daughters) to Morenci, Arizona (around 1946?) where he worked in the Phelps-Dodge Open-pit copper mine (for 20 years?). He did well there, and this is what prompted Dan and me to move there in 1953. Lee later moved to Bangs, TX.

My Dad was a generous man. When others wouldn't, he loaned money to his Spanish co-workers, and they always paid him back. Everyone liked my father. Though he had no education, and couldn't figure with a pencil, you couldn't beat him out of a penny even if you wanted to because he was so good with math. He was always the kindest man there is and was always ready to help others if he could. He used to love to buy Halloween candy and liked giving it to the kids. That was one of his greatest joys. My only regret is that I didn't spend more time with him when we all lived in Morenci."

NOTES ABOUT THE APPLIN LAND IN SHARP, TEXAS:

Apparently there were originally 550 acres owned by John Marion Applin. After he died the land was divided amongst his heirs. Lee inherited 80 acres. Lee's land had a very low section where beautiful Willow trees grew. This is the area where the well was placed. The water was only about 5 feet below the surface. Verna remembers that when their neighbor's wells would dry up during the summer, they would come to this well to get water. Lee always helped his neighbors.

ii. Mary Ann "Annie" Applin was born on 20 Nov 1890 in Milam County, TX. She married Charley Brown about 1923. She died on 31 Dec 1976 in Cameron, TX, Milam County -- Cameron Cemetery.

Notes for Mary Ann "Annie" Applin:General Notes:Annie (Mary Ann) was married to Charley Brown who died about 1942. Charley was one of Sadie Brown's brothers. There were 3 Browns who married three Applins. Word of mouth states that one son was born to Annie and Charley, but died in infantcy.

Verna Lee Applin remembers Aunt Annie as an excellent cook. Her lima beans were the only ones Verna would ever eat.

iii. Maggie Josephine "Josie" Applin was born on 19 Oct 1892 in Milam County, TX. She married John William "Willie" Brown on 20 Mar 1910 in Coryell County, Texas. She died on 02 Mar 1972 in Unknown.

Notes for Maggie Josephine "Josie" Applin:General Notes:Josie was married to John William Brown born 1-15-1890, died 10-6-1937. John was one of Sadie Brown's brothers. There were 3 Browns who married three Applins.

Josie was entrusted with paying accounts and the indebtedness of Mattie Applin. She filed an application for Mortuary Warrant to have the funeral expenses paid against the widow's pension.

Verna lee Applin remembers Aunt Josie as being "plump and jolly." She also made the thickest gravy Verna ever saw, but Josie's son, Henry, loved it real thick over biscuits.

Verna has one recollection that occurred when she was very small. She remembers Aunt Josie saying to her, "Come up here on Aunt Josie's feather bed and take a nap." Aunt Josie wasn't referring to a real bed, but to her own plump body that she referred to as a "feather bed."

iv. Marian Elzey Applin was born on 04 Mar 1894 in Milam County, TX. She died on 03 Jul 1894 in infant death.

v. Amanda " Etta" Applin was born on 28 May 1895 in Milam County, Texas. She married Monroe Alley on 23 Feb 1913. She died on 29 Aug 1966 in Bangs, TX, Brown County.

Notes for Amanda " Etta" Applin:General Notes:She was called "Etter." She was married to Monroe Alley, and was living in San Angelo in 1926 when her mother, Mattie, died (per Mattie's obituary).

Verna Lee Applin remembers Aunt Etta(Etter) as a kind and loving person. She took care of motherless children. The neighbor children (The Harris') were left motherless when the mother died during the birth of Era Harris, Winnie's youngest sister.

vi. Julia Drucilla Applin was born on 16 Apr 1897 in Milam County, TX. She married William Ross Hairgrove on 02 Feb 1913 in Milam County, Texas. She died on 01 May 1983 in Mulsehoe, TX, Bailey County.

Notes for Julia Drucilla Applin:General Notes:She first married Ross Hairgroves, then Henry Allmand. She and Henry lived in Melrose, New Mexico, near the Texas border.

Notes from Glenda:"1st marriage to Ross HAIRGROVES - (produced Warren, Otis, and Nettie Mae). 2nd marriage to Henry Almond - (his children from a previous marriage are George and Cora Almond). We do not indicate any other marriages for Julia. I know that Henry Allmand was her last husband. I remember him fondly as a kind man. I loved to visit Aunt Julia and Uncle Henry. They had a peach orchard in Melrose, NM, and Aunt Julia canned the best peaches I have EVER tasted. We ALWAYS had home-canned peaches when we went for a visit. Julia is the only one of my grandfather's sisters or brothers that I personally remember. I guess this was because she lived in Melrose, New Mexico, during the time we lived in House, New Mexico, so we saw a lot of them. Aunt Julia was such a favorite of mine."
