Our despatches contain the intelligence that the schr. "H.A. Chase" which left Portland,Maine for this port on Thursday was seen to sink about two miles SW of Green Island. Theonly reason we have to believe that her crew has not perished is that the brig "Geo.Wheelwright" also from Portland for this port was seen bearing towards her as she wasgoing down. The "H.A.C." was built in Queens Co. last year and registered 90 tons. Withthe exception of a $600 share held by the master, she was owned entirely by JohnCOTTER, Mill St. who has no insurance. This is the second vessel Mr. COTTER has lostsince the beginning of the year. The cargo of the "H.A.C." consisted of old railway iron forMessrs James DOMVILLE & Co. of this city. The names and places of residence of thecrew were: John Quinlan, Carleton; Wm CHRISTOPHER, Town of Portland; DanielQuinlan, Carleton; Michael QUIGG, Pisarinco; and John BARR. They were all unmarriedmen, except CHRISTOPHER who has a wife and family. 4 May 1874 D.N.: The brig "Geo.Wheelwright" arrived at this port on Saturday morn. and her master, Capt. HOWARD, wasat once interviewed regarding the fate of the crew of schr. "Harriet A. Chase" reported inour despatches on Saturday to have sunk two miles west of Green Island while comingfrom Portland, Maine to this port with a cargo of railway iron. There was no truth in thereport of the loss of the "H.A.C.". The latter vessel left Portland a few hours before his onThursday and was in sight of him until 5 o'clock that afternoon when "G.W." was offMoahegan Island about 45 miles from Portland and the "H.A.C." had run inside in smoothwater. The "H.A.C." was all right when leaving his sight at place named.. Yesterday morn.Capt. HOWARD's story was confirmed by the safe arrival at this port of schr. "H.A. Chase"- all well.
