Course Description: Th is seminar reviews the basic operating principles of hydraulically operated, diaphragm actuated control valves. Examples are given for applications requiring on/off and modulating control and how to determine which valve will best meet a particular system’s requirements. Includes a discussion of technical issues related to altitude valves, including operational theory, proper sizing, installation, operation, maintenance and trouble shooting. Hands-on stations allow students to review preventative maintenance, visual illustration of how altitude valves and pressure reducing valves operate, preventive and corrective maintenance, and component identifi cation for both valves.

McGuire, Tim: Project Engineer, Water Resources, H2MWater Treatment Design O&MMr. McGuire’s experience in water resources includes groundwater well construction, rehabilitation and permit applications; potable water treatment technologies including volatile organic chemical removal utilizing granular activated carbon and air stripping, nitrate removal utilizing ion exchange resins,, disinfection and pH adjustment; water distribution; construction of bulk chemical tanks; water supply hydraulic design; preparation of construction documents; construction administration on these projects.
Mirra, Stephen: Staff Engineer, Water Resources, H2MWater Main InstallationAs a staff engineer, Mr. Mirra’s responsibilities include the preparation of specifi cations and design plans for the bidding and construction of Public Works projects including projects for water supply, transmission and storage. Mr. Mirra also performs design calculations for wellhead treatment processes and prepares water treatment design reports for regulatory review and approval. Mr. Mirra also prepares engineer’s reports for new water supply wells for regulatory review and approval. He also assists with construction administration on various Wick’s law projects.

Pokorny, Joseph: Chief Engineer, Suff olk County Water AuthorityHands-on ChlorinationMr. Pokorny is responsible for the budgeting, planning, design and construction of all SCWA’s production, storage , and treatment facilities. He received a degree in Electrical Engineering from Manhattan College, his masters degree in Business Administration from St. John’s University and is a licensed Professional Engineer in NY State.
