1 System Overview 1.1 Vehicles

The Register of Encumbered Vehicles system allows potential buyers to find out if a vehicle is stolen or has money owing on it. By searching for vehicles by registration, engine number and/or vehicle identification number, potential buyers can access a certificate or an extract.

A REVS certificate is a nationally recognised notice of financial interest in a vehicle. An Extract from the Register of Security Interests only advises the existence of a security interest against one or more vehicle identifiers supplied. The extract will not provide information on stolen vehicles. If this information is required, contact the local police station.

REVS provides information on vehicles that are registered in any Australian state. However, Western Australian information can be up to 24 hours out of date. No link to the Tasmanian Vehicle Securities Register is available at the current time. Consequently, no legislative protection is provided by REVS searches for Tasmania and Western Australia.

REVS only provides information on encumbrances made in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, the Australian Capital Territory and the Northern Territory. For example, a vehicle registered in Tasmania but encumbered in Queensland will be included in REVS. A vehicle registered in Queensland but encumbered in Tasmania will not be included in REVS. If a vehicle has been reported to the police as stolen, that information will be reported in REVS as well; stolen vehicles are added to REVS frequently but periodically. As the information may not be current, REVS can not guarantee the accuracy of the stolen vehicle list and a further check with state police should be made.

1.2 Boats and Outboard Motors The Register of Encumbered Vehicles for boats and outboard motors system allows potential buyers to find out if a boat or outboard motor has money owing on it or is stolen.

Boats can be searched for by hull identification. Outboard motors can be searched by engine number. Once a boat or outboard motor is found, REVS for Boats and Outboard Motors allows potential buyers to access a certificate or an extract.

A REVS Certificate is a nationally recognised notice of financial interest in a boat or outboard motor. An Extract from the Register of Security Interests only advises the existence of a security interest against one or more boat or outboard motor identifiers supplied. The extract will not provide information on stolen boat or outboard motors. If this information is required, contact the local police station.

REVS will provide information on security interests on boats and outboard motors that are registered in Queensland. Stolen boats and outboard motors are added to REVS frequently but periodically. As the information may not be current, REVS can not guarantee the accuracy of the stolen boat or outboard motor list and a further check with police should be made.
