A Finer Point of View...INTERTECH 2008 will be held onMay 5-7, 2008 at the ContemporaryResort in the beautiful, familyfriendly Orlando, Florida USA.INTERTECH 2008 will once againhave global leaders in research, superabrasive synthesis, manufacturing, applicationdevelopment and end users ofsuperabrasives presenting papers andattending the conference. The lastINTERTECH held in Atlanta, GAfeatured approximately 60 excellentpapers selected from over 100submitted abstracts on ultra hardtechnology. INTERTECH 2006 hostedattendees from 19 different countriesand 5 continents making this a trueglobal event! Attendees were ecstaticabout the format and content andmost expressed their eagerness toreturn in 2008. INTERTECH 2008 isresponding to that huge success withan early flood of papers, newcompanies wanting to present papersas well as a newly structuredINTERTECH 2008 steeringcommittee comprised of current IDADirectors, global manufacturers, academia, leading abrasivemanufacturers and the heads ofmajor grinding and machiningorganizations. INTERTECH 2008 isan international conference designedto celebrate the awesome growth ofdiamond and other ultra hardtechnology and to show how thistechnology is integral to many of theprocesses that produce the productsvital to society. Without diamondsand related materials, many of thethings we take for granted, such aspetroleum, minerals, industrialproducts, automobiles, aircraft, electrical components, stone, highways, glass, wire & cable, woodcomposites…even special surgicalknives and prosthetics, would bevastly different, more costly or notavailable at all. Superabrasives arethe heart of achieving success in allthese areas and many more. Leadingmanufacturers and service providershave made a major commitment tothe use of Superabrasives in theirprocesses and applications. Newworkpiece materials and an increaseddemand for productivity haveheralded the need for Superabrasivesin every application possible.Machine tools are now beingdesigned to take full advantage ofSuperabrasive cutting tools, wheelsand blades…and this is just thebeginning. Application of“Superabrasives” has grown from thefirst use of natural diamond to grind

tungsten carbide in the early 1940’sto a broad range of high productionapplications across manymanufacturing and service industries. From grinding and machining ofsuperalloys and high-tech ceramics inAerospace to metalworking ofhardened steel, bi-metals or metalmatrix composites in Automotive, aswell as, the sawing or drilling ofstone and concrete or new CVDdiamond innovations, the“Superabrasives” industry has madegreat strides by increasingproductivity, reducing manufacturing& operating costs and implementingnew technology. INTERTECH 2008 isan outstanding platform to shareyour expertise in new technology orinnovative application developments.Presenters are featured here and gainnotoriety and exposure for research, products and use. Now is the time toget on the program by submitting anabstract for your paper. Remember, only the best will be accepted. Donot be left behind, attendINTERTECH 2008 and see what isgoing on in your industry, meet thepeople and innovators ofsuperabrasives or come and learnwhere you can improve youroperations by advancement intosuperabrasives. Book your flights, bring your family to Disney andshare in a unique experience. Comelearn about Superabrasives andinteract with global leaders all withone visit… INTERTECH 2008.

E-Mail ProtocolThe blessing and the curse of the digital revolution! Betweene-mail, instant and text messaging, cell phones, Blackberriesand the Internet, we are drowning in data overload. Moreover, the constant interruptions cost the U. S. economyan estimated $558 billion annually. This staggering numberdoes not add in the cost of poorly written e-mails that landcompanies and employees in hot legal trouble, destroy long-term client relationships, and ruin reputations-just reviewMike Brown's e-mails (former FEMA chief) as HurricaneKatrina raged and you will understand. Add to this mix alack of civility and common sense and you have an explosivebrew.

What to do? For starters, treat e-mail writing as writing notas casual conversation. Whether words are written in the sky, sent by carrier pigeon or via the Web, words must connectwith the reader. Good writing allows this to happen; poorwriting does not. Currently, writing online is still, as authorPatricia O'Conner writes, in its Wild West stage ... witheverybody shooting from the hip and no sheriff in sight. Therefore, establish some law and order by developing an e-mail protocol, whether you are a multi-national or a singleshingle firm. Simply stated it's "the way we do businessaround here" in terms of communicating via e-mail with co-workers and customers. It is a code of behavior, a set ofstandards as to how you will frame your words, manage yourinbox, even extend your brand. Below is a short list ofquestions to visit at your next meeting. Your answers couldbe the beginning of a company-wide document.

How do you greet and close messages? Companies areputting together a series of key phrases used solely foropenings and closings. Remember, you would never callwithout greeting someone. Why would you not in your e-mails?

What does your e-mail signature say about yourcompany? It should be an extension of your company'sbrand. Professional with no cutesy sayings, it should containall contact information. Establish a standard for font styleand size. Also, because you have limited real estate, considerplacing your signature block horizontal rather than vertical.

What is the company policy aroundblind copies? Some companies onlyuse them for e-blasts; others say theyare strictly verboten. Discuss why, whenand how you use them. Caution: Somecomputer programs allow all those whoyou do not want to see your e-mail toview it if the recipient hits "reply all."

Do you have a message for the outof office auto-responder and whendo you turn it on? Four hours? Oneday? A large bank requires if anemployee is immersed in an importantproject, it must be turned on if he/sheis gone from the office for more thanone hour.

How often do you checke-mails? Some companiesset their programs so e-mails are only called uphourly, thus reducing downtime and increasingproductivity.

How soon do you returne-mails? Within fourhours? 24 hours? Somecompany policies state alle-mails need answering within the same business day.

Do you use emoticons? Buzzing bees, dancing bears, smiley faces. Suggestion: Heartily rule against it.

How many e-mails before you pick up the phone? Therule of thumb seems to be three. If the issues are notresolved, pick up the phone or walk down the hall.

What is your company's policy about writing businessletters, accessing confidential information, or handlingracial or sexual harassment? Your e-mail policy should becompatible with these documents.

How will you insure employees understand yourprotocol? For example, who is the contact person whenquestions arise? How will updates be handled? Will youschedule trainings?

E-mail has become the biggest productivity drain inbusinesses today. Getting a handle on this daily data dumpby establishing procedures, etiquette if you will, will makeyou and your company stand above the crowd and possiblybring law and order to the untamed world of Internetcommunication. What are your "best practices"?

THE NEW ABB FLASHDROP IS APOWERFUL PALM-SIZED TOOL FORFAST AND EASY PARAMETERSELECTION AND SETTINGAugust 2007, New Berlin, WI – The tool cancopy parameters between two identical drives, orbetween a PC and a drive, making it ideal for high-volumecustomization ofmachines. With theFlashDrop (MFDT-01) tool, the drivedoesn’t need to beunpackaged, orconnected to themains. “Simply openthe top of the boxand seat theFlashDrop wand intothe access point builtinto the ABB LowVoltage drives, andthey are programmedin as little as three seconds,” notes MichaelMikolajczak, product line manager for ABB’s ACS50,ACS150, ACS350 and ACS/H550 drive lines. “And, fordistributors, machine builders and system integratorswho need identical programming across a host ofdrives for machine production or repeatable processes, this tool ensures exact replication of programming –and minimizes the labor/costs required to achieve it,”he said. “The tool makes it easy to achieve very fast, exactly repeated production, and removes the variationthat can affect an OEM’s potential quality issue relatedto varied programming across hundreds, or eventhousands, of units,” said Mikolajczak.
