Update Supervisory Board
SB meeting 27. March 2009:• Hand-over from the outgoing to the incoming board
members and up-dates from the Secretariat. • Annual report & financials for 2008;• Annual plan & budget for 2009;• Membership processes for new members and other
membership related issues. • The sponsorship protocols for CHI events;• Approval of “Telefono Anar” from Spain as host for the
International Consultation 2010.
Update Supervisory Board
SB meeting 30. October 2009:- Network philosophy; need to get sufficient
rotation from members, taskforces and the Supervisory Board – to be discussed with General Assembly IC
- Financials: in good order – assured funding until 2012 – need to coordinate better between secretariat and regions on planning and fundraising, comprehensive fundraising strategy with long term plans and diversified funding necessary
Update Supervisory Board
- Fundraising DGIS: CHI joined 2 coalitions in the Netherlands (Plan NL/ War Child) 2011-2015.
- Answer April 2010 – Secretariat/SB to continue process
- Membership: major challenges with 3 membership criteria. remedial measures in 2010
- Free data software now available for members (English)
- 3 criteria remain (data submission, PSP checklist and fee)
Update Supervisory Board
- Approved new members: Kazachstan, Brazil, Suriname, Mauritius, China.
- Member stocktake: 108 full members, 25 associate members, 55 potentials
- New strategy 2011-2015: draft to be sent to members Q1 2010Feedback SB:
* Further development on data collection and analysis, involve regional research institutes & focus on new technologies

• The Asian Pacific region has 22 full members, 6 associate members and 8 potentials
• New full members 2008/2009: Kazachstan, China, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh
• Launches in 2008/2009: Kazachstan, Sri Lanka, Maldives
• Expected launches 2010: Malaysia, Cambodia

* Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Child Abuse and Neglect (APCCAN) 2009: Looking through the Lens of Prevention- Perth, Australia - “Using Data to Advocate for Holistic Prevention”

• Strategic planning workshop Indonesia by child helpline from Egypt & signing MoU by key stakeholders from TESA 129 to enhance coordination amongst partners of the child helpline, to improve the quality of referral and intervention services
• ISPCAN Conference on ‘Towards a Caring and Non-Violent Community: A Child’s Perspective’’, Hong Kong, organised by both ISPCAN and CHI’s member helpline in Hong Kong, Against Child Abuse (ACA)
• South Asia Forum Regional Preparatory Consultation, Nepal, for the World Congress III against Sexual Exploitation of Children and Adolescents (Child helplines in recommendations)

-Toll free status• Bangladesh: during a scale-up meeting in Dhaka, the
government committed itself to designating 1098 as a toll-free number to Aparajeyo
• Telecom Cambodia officially allocated a 3-digit toll-free phone number, 115, for the child helpline Childfund Cambodia
Challenges
• Securing sustainable (long-term) financial support
• Political unrest, natural disasters and bureaucracy hampering
progress in the establishment of child helplines in some countries
• Cultural attitudes towards children
• Developing partnership and synergy with other child protection
agencies and how to curb competition
• Finding sponsorship to take part in CHI activities
• Long term partnerships with private and public sector (donors,
regional bodies and governments)
Challenges - Technological
• The high cost of communication services that continue to
inhibit the uptake of services and their usage by child
helplines.
• Poor connectivity – Poor bandwidth situation
• The pace of change – new technologies and how to keep up
with the pace.
• Aquiring a 3 digit toll-free number for all child helplines and
the harmonisation of numbers in the Asian Pacific region to
one common number, 1098 - Toll free status not always
acquired
