To enable you to:
Use the basic features of RefWorks; Import references from different sources; Manage your database of references; Create a bibliography/reference list.

o is a free personal online database that allows you to manage all your research and to generate a bibliography in the format you need.
o enables you to: Import references from many sources Organize your references Include citations while you write your paper Create a bibliography in a variety of citation
formats, and in different document formats (Word, RTF, HTML, etc.)

Access your personal account from any computer connected to the web.

Getting started: setting up an account
Go to www.RefWorks.com/RefWorks
Click on Sign up for a New Account
Fill in the form
Click on Register

Options for importing references:
Enter references manually
Export data from “Direct Export Partners” e.g. SOLO, OxLIP+, SCOPUS, CSA
Search for data from within RefWorks e.g. OLIS, PubMed
Import data from databases using saved files – usually in plain text format with tagged fields

Adding new reference manually
Click References | Add a reference.
Check you are happy with the choice in the Fields used by box.
Enter details in fields marked with .
Use see detail for help in choosing what to enter.
Save reference or Save & add new to continue adding more references.

Direct export from SOLO
Login to SOLO using your Single Sign On.
Search SOLO and mark some results by clicking the star next to the item.
Access your E-shelf for a list all of the records you have marked.
Select the ones you want to use.
From the drop-down menu, choose Push to RefWorks and click Go to export directly to RefWorks.

Creating Folders in RefWorks
Click Folders and select Create New Folder.
Enter a name in New Folder Name and click OK.
Go back to View – Last Imported Folder and select some references.
Choose a folder from the Put in Folder list to save your selected references to that folder.
To find and remove any duplicates choose View – Duplicates and follow the instructions.

Direct export from OxLIP+
Go to http://oxlip-plus.bodleian.ox.ac.uk and do a Cross-Search.
Select the articles you want to save and then click on My Research.
If you are not already logged in, click on the top right hand option to login, using your Single Sign-On login.
Again, select all the items you would like to export to RefWorks and click on Selected.
Click Save and then under Record format, select the option for RefWorks.

Direct export from Cambridge Scientific Abstracts Conduct your search. Select the records you want to
export and click the icon
Click
The references are automatically exported to RefWorks. (Make sure you are not already logged into RefWorks before you export)
Your records should appear in the Last Imported Folder.
Check them for accuracy at this point.

1. Saving results from BBIH
Search Bibliography of British & Irish History Select the items you want to save At the top of the page click on Export
step 1, change file name if preferred
step 2, select download as method of export
step 3, select “.txt – RefWorks tagged format” click on export, then save file to computer.

2. Importing to RefWorks
Log in to RefWorks. Select References/Import from the toolbar. Select the data source (RefWorks Tagged
Format) and database (Tagged Format). Browse for the text file you saved Click Import. Your records should appear in the Last
Imported Folder.

Importing from Google Scholar
From Google Scholar search page click on Preferences link at side of search box
Scroll down to Bibliography manager settings
Select to “Show links to import citations into” – choose RefWorks from the dropdown menu
Save preferences
Search results should now offer the option to import to RefWorks- note: this has to be done individually as there is no “mark records” option.

Formatting citations in your paper with Write-N-Cite
Write-N-Cite is a tool which you download into your word processing software. It makes placing references into your paper easy.
You need to download the Write-N-Cite plug from RefWorks.
Choose Tools – Write-N-Cite and follow the instructions.

Working Offline with Write-N-Cite
When you first download Write-N-Cite, tick the box for offline use
Offline, you can: view your references and insert temporary
citation placeholders Format your bibliographyYou cannot add, edit or delete references
in your RefWorks account offline

Adding a citation with W-N-C
To add a citation at a particular point in your Word document click on the Write-N-Cite icon on the toolbar.
Log into Write-N-Cite to access your RefWorks database through View – All references or View-Folder.
In the Word document, place you cursor where the citation is to be inserted.
From the Write-N-Cite list click on cite next to the reference you want.
Save your document.

Formatting a bibliography with W-N-C
In the Write-N-Cite window, click on Bibliography and choose your preferred style e.g. History Faculty style.
Click Create Bibliography for a document with citations and a bibliography formatted to your chosen style.
You can change your output style without creating a new document (N.B. don’t switch between in-text and footnote styles though)
You can un-format your document by choosing Tools – Display unformatted citations.

Adding page numbers to citations
To include page numbers in citations, use the Edit Citation in Write-N-Cite
