DescRiPtionThe apostle Paul instructed Timothy to “preach the word! . . . Convince, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuff ering and teaching” (2 Tim. 4:2). This instruction is in keeping with the principle refl ected in the book of Acts that the proclamation of God’s Word is the heart of corporate worship. yet in many churches, preaching is in decline under the infl uence of a culture that prefers entertain-ment to exposition. in this volume, fourteen experienced preachers reaffi rm the centrality of preaching in the life of the church as they explore what the Scriptures have to say about the mandate, meaning, motivation, and method of preaching. With wisdom and conviction, the authors remind the church that God works through the faithful preaching of His Word, no less in the twenty-fi rst century than in the fi rst.

enDoRsement“When you mention the name Steven J. Lawson, one word comes to mind: preaching. But with Dr. Lawson, one word won’t do. it’s passion-fi lled-to-overfl owing preaching. it’s bold, persuasive, and powerful preaching. Above all, it’s expository preaching. These essays by Dr. Lawson’s friends honor him and the legacy of his ministry in the best possible way by off ering an exposition of expository preaching. May these essays, like Dr. Lawson’s ministry, bear much fruit in the life of the church.”

one man and one WomanJOel r. BeeKe aND Paul M. sMalleY

DescRiPtionWhat does the Bible teach about sexual relationships between people of the same sex? Does true love require that we accept all forms of sexual expression? No, real love does not rejoice in sin, but rejoices in the truth. in the Bible, God reveals that He created gender, sex, and marriage, and we may not alter them at our will. Through His laws and works in history, God has made it clear that homo-sexual practices violate His holy purposes for mankind. The New Testament reaffi rms God’s created order and moral laws. it too warns that homosexual practice, like any other sin that we cherish, is the pathway to God’s judgment. However, the Lord Jesus Christ saves sinners by His Spirit and gives them a new identity, forgiveness, life, and power to live according to His commandments. This is the message that all people need to hear: God’s laws have not changed, but God’s grace off ers hope to sinners through Jesus Christ.

the lord’s Prayer for His PeoplerOBerT TraIll

DescRiPtionFather, I will that they also, whom thou hast given me, be with me where I am; that they may behold my glory, which thou hast given me: for thou lovedst me before the foundation of the world. —John 17:24

Robert Traill’s treatment of Christ’s intercessory prayer for His people is a masterpiece of Puritan experiential doctrine. Mining the depths of John 17:24, Traill discovers the com-forts of the doctrine of election, the blessing of our hope of heaven, and the believer’s delight in the glory of Christ—all founded on the immovable love of the Father for His Son. Traill’s exposition is full of practical application, careful to address both believers and unbelievers alike.

godly Prayer and its answersJOhN BrOWN OF WaMPhraY

FOreWOrD BY Dr. JOel r. BeeKe

DescRiPtionGodly Prayer and Its Answers is an extended meditation upon Christ’s promise in John 14:13–14, “And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will i do, that the Father may be glorifi ed in the Son. if ye shall ask any thing in my name, i will do it.” However, in the pro-cess of touching upon everything stated and implied in the text, Brown produces a full and complete treatment of the doctrine of prayer in a manner calculated to promote the exercise of faith in Jesus Christ.

enDoRsement“This volume on prayer richly rewards the thoughtful reader who perseveres through its older english, stepping back in time to sit under the ministry of this servant of Christ, the Scottish theologian John Brown of Wamphray.you will be signifi cantly challenged, encour-aged, and deepened in your communion with the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit—and that, most certainly, is worth it.”

Pentecostal outpourings: Revival and the Reformed traditioneDITeD BY rOBerT DaVIs sMarT, MIChael a. G. haYKIN, aND IaN huGh ClarY

DescRiPtionWhen Jesus ascended to heaven and sat down at the right hand of God the Father, He poured out His Holy Spirit at Pentecost. This signifi cant historical and redemptive event was not the last time Christ poured out His Spirit in redemptive history. Mindful of these subsequent acts, Pente-costal Outpourings presents historical research on revivals in the Reformed tradition during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. investigating the British isles, it observes the outpourings experienced among Welsh Calvinistic Methodists, irish Dissenters, Calvinistic english Baptists, and Scottish Presbyterians. it then moves on to evaluate the revival instincts among Presbyte-rians, Congregationalists, Baptists, and the Dutch Reformed in America. May the knowledge of these outpourings of the Holy Spirit help us seek God earnestly to revive His church once again.

“sweetly set on god”: the Piety of David Brainerd

eDITeD aND INTrODuCeD BY DusTIN W. BeNGe

DescRiPtionBest remembered for his missionary work among the American indians, David Brainerd (1718–1747) was a central character in eighteenth-century American evangelism. “Sweetly Set on God” introduces readers to the life and journal writings of this pioneer of modern missionary work. Dustin Benge begins by presenting the events of Brainerd’s short life and the intense personal spiritual piety that undergirded his ministry. Then, in fi fty-one excerpts drawn from Brainerd’s journal, readers will discover his evangelical humiliation, his under-standing that God had altered his sinful human nature, his sensitivity to sin, and his holiness of life. Read this book and see if you come to view Brainerd as Jonathan edwards, his biogra-pher, did: as “a remarkable instance of true and eminent Christian piety in heart and practice.”

a clear and simple treatise Respecting the lord’s supperTheODOre BeZaTraNslaTeD BY DaVID C. NOe, INTrODuCTION BY MarTIN I. KlauBerFOreWOrD BY r. sCOTT ClarK

DescRiPtionTheodore Beza’s A Clear and Simple Treatise Respecting the Lord’s Supper (1559) advances a tire-less defense of the Reformed perspective on the Lord’s Supper, responding chapter by chapter to specifi c arguments raised against John Calvin by his Lutheran opponent, Joachim Westphal. Beza makes great use of the concept of metonymy, or a fi gure of speech, in his interpretation of the words of institution, yet he equally champions the position that the Lord’s Supper is not a bare symbol and that in it we have true communion with the risen Christ. And like Calvin, Beza refers extensively to the church fathers, especially Augustine, in defense of his position.

This often-overlooked treatise marks some of the major diff erences between the Reformed and the Lutheran movements during the so-called second generation of the Reformation. A critical issue at the time, sacramental theology was at the forefront of the original break with Rome and prevented the various Protestant movements from uniting. its translation into english from the original Latin provides a wider opportunity for those interested in these move-ments to learn more about some of the substantial issues of the period.

Appended to the book are two smaller treatises of Beza: A System of Doctrine on the Sacra-mental Substance and The Law of God in Various Classes.

Divine Rule maintained: anthony Burgess, covenant theology, and the Place of the law in Reformed scholasticismsTePheN J. CassellI

DescRiPtionin Divine Rule Maintained, Stephen J. Casselli provides us with a window into the exegetical and theological underpinnings of the Westminster Confession’s chapter on the law by delivering an in-depth analysis of Anthony Burgess’s Vindiciae Legis. After a brief introduction to Burgess and his historical context, Casselli details the logical course of Burgess’s book considering the law as given to Adam, the law given to Moses, and fi nally the proper relation between law and gospel. Along the way, Casselli opens up such controverted points as natural law, the cov-enant of works, the continuing obligation to the moral law, and the diverse administrations of one unifi ed covenant of grace. What we see is a pastoral theology developed in a richly complex environment where technical distinctions were warranted given the polemical con-text; where the broad history of the Western catholic tradition was deeply respected; where a covenantal hermeneutic was consistently applied to Scripture; and where all theological formulations grew out of detailed linguistic exegesis of particular texts of Scripture in the context of the broader ecclesiastical community.

the Doctrine of the covenant and testament of godJOhaNNes COCCeIus (1603–1669)

TraNslaTeD BY CaseY CarMIChael

INTrODuCeD BY WIlleM J. VaN asselT

DescRiPtionJohannes Cocceius (1603–1669) was prominent Bible scholar who taught at the universities of Bremen, Franeker, and Leiden. As a gifted linguist, he produced a Hebrew lexicon, com-mentary related to every book of the Bible, and several theological treatises.

Cocceius’s contributions to covenant theology simultaneously sparked theological controversies and further fruitful dialogue for understanding the progressive nature of sal-vation history. The Doctrine of the Covenant and Testament of God describes the entire biblical history as a series of events by which an original covenant of works is gradually annulled, bringing new phases in the history of the covenant of grace. He shows that God’s standard way of relating to mankind is through covenant, which, at its heart, is friendship with God.

Casey Carmichael’s translation of Cocceius’s book is monumental, providing the fi rst english edition of a work that helped shape Reformed theology for centuries. Historical theologians have long noted Cocceius’s work as a crucial text in the development of federal theology, and now this translation will open access to a wider range of readers and is sure to spur further interest and research in Reformed expositions of covenantal thought. The introduction by Willem J. van Asselt, the world’s leading scholar on Coccieus’s life and theol-ogy, provides the historical context for understanding the importance of the book and a summary of the signifi cant contributions it made to Reformed theology.

The CreaTion and CorrupTion of The World (1:1—11:32)

The Creation of All Things with Adam as Head (1:1—2:25)

chapter 1: God creates the universe as a good andorderly home where mankind, created in God’s image, could live and serve Him.

1:1 In the beginning God. The beginning of time, space, andmatter. All came from Him and is under His control. The He-brew word created means “to create new.” This is uniquelydivine activity; God is the only subject of the verb. Creationtestifies to divine power, ownership, and authority.1:2 without form, and void. What the original creation was atthe beginning, not what it became. The gap theory tries toargue original creation became corrupt, but the expressionmeans empty or uninhabited (Job 26:7; Jer. 4:23). Isaiah 45:18proves the world was made to be inhabited. Also v. 31 showsthere was no death or corruption before the fall.1:3 Let there be light. Creation is by the spoken word of God.Christ spoke everything into existence (John 1:3; Col. 1:16),which power He displayed in the many miracles He per-formed. Paul drew an analogy between the creation of lightand the regeneration of the believer (2 Cor. 4:6). The wonderof being born again of God’s Holy Spirit is equal to the powerdisplayed on the first day of creation. That is surely awesome!1:4 it was good. Another repeated phrase—see note at v. 31.Even the inanimate creation is declared good.

1:5 God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. All one needs is a rotating globe and a directional aspect tothe light to produce day and night, and God could have di-rectly produced the light, as He will in the heavenly city (Rev.21:23). first day. Literally, “day one.” Though the numeral istranslated first (ordinal), the word here is primarily cardinaland defines the usage here of day as one cycle of evening andmorning. Thereafter (vv. 8,13, etc.) the counting is ordinal.1:6–8 firmament. This word means “expanse” and includesouter space. It is not just the sky since God calls the firmamentHeaven (v. 8) and the stars are put in the firmament (v. 14). Thisis the expanse which God stretches out (Job 9:8; Ps. 104:2; Isa.40:22; 42:5; 44:24; 45:12; 48:13; 51:13; Jer. 10:12; Zech. 12:1).1:9 Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together untoone place, and let the dry land appear. Second Peter 3:5 refersto this separation of water and land and confirms that the landappeared with some under water and some above.1:11 whose seed is in itself. The first living things are made:plants and trees with “seed in itself,” a mark of living things.1:14–19 lights in the firmament. The momentous creation ofthe sun, the moon, and the stars whose light takes over fromthe light sources of the first three days. the stars also. God callsthem all by their names (Ps. 147:4; Isa. 40:26). There are an es-timated 200 billion stars in the MilkyWay galaxy alone and anestimated 100 billion galaxies in the universe. The stars are thework of His fingers (Ps. 8:3).

the forgotten fear: Where Have all the god-fearers gone?alBerT N. MarTINFOreWOrD BY GeOFF ThOMas

DescRiPtionThe fear of God is an important theme in the Bible, yet many Christians today overlook it or treat it carelessly. Fearing God is the soul of godliness, and those who claim to love God should desire to understand what it means to fear Him. The Forgotten Fear revisits this important topic. Author Albert Martin fi rst establishes the theme of the fear of God in both the old and New Testaments, and then defi nes what fearing God means. Finally, he addresses the practical implications of fearing God, showing its expression in the lives of Abraham and Joseph and providing instruction for believers today to maintain and increase their fear of God.

the lord shepherding His sheepJOel r. BeeKe

DescRiPtionThrough the simple words of Psalm 23, David revealed a glorious and comforting knowledge of his covenantal Lord, pictured vividly as his gracious Shepherd and Host. We easily recite this psalm, but it describes an experience nothing less than a spiritual Holy of Holies. yet God calls sinners to enter here by faith and walk with Him through all of life. Joel Beeke’s exposition of the psalm illuminates the riches of the Reformed experiential doctrines of salvation and sancti-fi cation. The book aims, by God’s grace, to help readers to grow in their understanding of God’s love for His elect people, their submissive embrace of His purposes, and their glad contentment through life’s distressing journey until they dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

Portraits of faith: What five Biblical characters teach us

about our life with godJOel r. BeeKe

DescRiPtionWe often use the word faith without thinking much about its meaning. We know that without faith, it is impossible to please God and that faith is the core and foundation of daily Christian living. But what is faith? Author Joel R. Beeke believes we can best understand faith by see-ing how it operates by the Spirit in the lives of fallen sinners like us. Accordingly, he considers essential aspects of faith operating in the lives of Adam and eve, the Shunammite woman, the Canaanite woman, and Caleb. With pastoral warmth, he challenges readers to ask themselves three questions: Do i have this kind of faith? Am i exercising the particular aspect of faith being described? How can this example of a particular dimension of faith be used in my life to make me a mature believer? Study questions for each chapter encourage meaningful refl ection for both individual and group study. Paperback, 104 pages, Page Size: 5 x 7.5 inches

FOreWOrD BY JOel r. BeeKe

DescRiPtionin Thoughts on Preaching and Pastoral Ministry, James M. Garretson provides a detailed narra-tive of James W. Alexander’s life in order to better understand his approach to gospel labors. Garretson draws deeply from Alexander’s correspondence, tracking the spiritual development of his life as it shaped his practice of pastoral ministry. in addition, assessments of Alexander’s sermons, books, and especially reviews provide valuable personal statements that shed light on his character and convictions. Throughout, Alexander is allowed to speak for himself so that the reader may enter into the spiritual pulse that animated his life and actions. Bracing, heartening, and at times frustrating, Alexander’s growth as a Christian and development as a minister is the story of a man subdued by God’s grace and a life marked by a growing confor-mity to the likeness of Christ.

is church membership Biblical?rYaN M. MCGraW aND rYaN sPeCK

Many churches have an offi cial pro-cess to join their membership. is this really a biblical practice? The authors show that the Bible assumes the necessity of formal church mem-bership so that we can fulfi ll the commands and apply the promises given to the church. Clearly and

carefully, and answering contemporary objections along the way, the authors make the biblical case that God desires the members of His heavenly kingdom to join with the earthly society that refl ects it—Christ’s body, the church.

The spirit of our age encourages us not to feel bad about ourselves and to build up our self-esteem. yet to become a Christian and then to maintain a healthy Christian life, we must practice repentance—acknowledging with sorrow our sin and yearning for holiness and increased obedience to God’s will. in this pamphlet, Jeremy Walker

explains from the Scriptures what it means to repent by turning from our sin and turning to God. He provides bib-lical portraits of repentance and practical steps toward developing this important characteristic in our lives.

Why must We forgive?sTaNleY D. GaleJesus taught believers to pray, “For-give us our debts, as we forgive our debtors” (Matt. 6:12). Paul urged Christ’s followers to forgive one another as Christ forgave them (Col. 3:13). Christ gives Christians a mandate to forgive and provides a model of forgiveness that is neces-sary for healthy relationships. But

what is forgiveness, and how should we practice it? in How Should We Forgive?, Pastor Stanley Gale considers the nature of the forgiveness we receive from God, its role in our ongo-ing relationship with Him, and the way we must reciprocate by forgiving others as we have been forgiven.

the lord’s supper and the “Popish mass”: a study of Heidelberg catechism Q&a 80COrNelIs P. VeNeMa

DescRiPtionThe controversial question and answer 80 of the Heidelberg Catechism, which condemns the “popish Mass,” seems to some a harsh statement in this document otherwise admired for its warm pastoral style and genial tone. Viewing this question and answer as unnecessarily polemi-cal and injurious to the Catechism’s usefulness as a contemporary statement of the Christian faith, some Reformed denominations have removed it from the text. Cornel Venema provides historical background and biblical teaching to defend the Catechism’s inclusion of question and answer 80, arguing that it must be retained today, as it “refl ects a fundamental evangelical passion to uphold the suffi ciency of Christ’s one sacrifi ce on the cross and to condemn idolatry in whatever form.”

DescRiPtionThis second volume of Perkins’s Works contains his Commentary on Galatians. Perkins preached on Galatians each Lord’s Day for over three years. Ralph Cudworth obtained Perkins’s handwrit-ten notes and edited them for publication. Because Perkins did not complete the commentary, Cudworth supplemented the manuscript with his own comments on chapter 6. Following the model taught in his treatise The Art of Prophesying, Perkins’s pattern in commenting on Gala-tians is to explain the text, deduce a few points of doctrine from it, answer objections raised against the doctrine, and then give practical uses of what the passage teaches.

Who is Jesus? knowing christ through His “i am” sayingsJ. V. FesKO

DescRiPtionWho is Jesus? is He God, as the church has claimed for nearly two thousand years? or is He just a good man? J. V. Fesko takes a close look at Jesus’s “i am” claims in the gospel of John and guides us to a better understanding of who Jesus is. Jesus, the author says, conducted His min-istry clothed in His “coat of old Testament colors” made, in God’s providence, of the promises, prophecies, themes, and ideas that foretold of the Messiah. Jesus’s claims of deity reveal that He is the great i AM, the name God revealed to Moses at the burning bush. in this book with study questions, suitable for individual or group study, Fesko views the “i am” sayings of Jesus through the perspective of the old Testament, and we come to see Him in His biblical glory as God in the fl esh, who dwelled among men to seek and to save those who were lost.

“A work of infi nite moment depends on a moment of time.”

John Fox’s Time and the End of Time presents the never-dying soul with the weighty things one must deal with while standing on the coast of eternity: God, sin, heaven, hell, and, most of all, the personal work of Christ. Fox’s piercing and searching exposition of two main texts, ephesians 5:16 and Deuteronomy 32:29, engages readers with motivations, directions, and applications so they can both “redeem the time” and “consider their latter end.” The span of life on earth quickly vanishes, and what is done with it will make or mar for eternity. either infi nite joy with God or the endless abyss of His fury—the hinge swings in time. “Therefore, do not pro-crastinate or delay…for a world.”

the christian’s only comfort in life and Death: an exposition of the Heidelberg catechism, 2 Vols.TheODOre VaNDerGrOe

DescRiPtionThe Christian’s Only Comfort is the sermonic exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism by Theodore VanderGroe (1705–1784), a prominent divine of the Dutch Further Refor-mation. VanderGroe’s exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism could be considered his magnum opus, and in some ways it was esteemed as highly by the godly in the Nether-lands as The Christian’s Reasonable Service of Wilhelmus à Brakel. in this able exposition of the Heidelberg Catechism, we fi nd the unmistakable characteristics of the Dutch Further Reformation: it is steeped in Scripture; it is very pastoral; and it promotes a robust, comprehensive form of Reformed piety.

aBout tHe autHoRTHeoDoRe VANDeRGRoe (1705–1784) is one of the last and most well-known rep-resentatives of the Dutch Further Reformation. He serves churches in Rijnsaterwoude and Kralingen, devoting a total of fi fty four years of his life to pastoral ministry.

finding forgiveness: Discovering the Healing Power of the gospelsTaNleY D. Gale

DescRiPtionif you are a Christian, you have personally experienced the joy of sins forgiven and reconcili-ation with God. Forgiveness, writes Stanley Gale, “is a divine accomplishment to be savored and off ered to others.” Forgiveness is the most basic of Christian graces, yet the topic raises many questions, including these:

• is it biblical to “forgive and forget”?• Why do we need to confess our sins if they are already forgiven?• How do we actually go about forgiving someone?• Does the Bible give a place to forgiving ourselves?• What does life look like after forgiveness?

in Finding Forgiveness, you will discover practical answers to these questions and many oth-ers. With pastoral warmth, the author will help you see how the awe of the gospel dawns anew for those who apply forgiveness and experience the healing of a burdened spirit or broken relationship.

aBout tHe autHoRSTANLey D. GALe serves as senior minister of The Reformed Presbyterian Church, West Ches-ter, Pennsylvania. He is the author of numerous books and articles, leads seminars on various topics, and is the founder of Community Houses of Prayer (www.CHoPministry.net).

the Deacon: the Biblical Roots and the ministry of mercy today

COrNelIs VaN DaM

DescRiPtionThe offi ce of deacon is God’s gift to His church, but today it is often undervalued, misunder-stood, and perceived to be of little importance. in The Deacon, the author considers the old Testament background for this calling, the deacon in New Testament times and in church history, and the current function of the offi ce. you will rediscover the high and privileged calling of deacons and come to a better understanding of what God requires of them.

enDoRsement“Dr. Van Dam’s book is an excellent treatment of the work of deacons. Writing from a Reformed perspective, he discusses the biblical foundations (both old and New Testament), church-historical developments, and practical aspects of the work of deacons today. i plan to prescribe this book as a textbook for diaconal studies at seminary. While the content is rooted in scholarly research, it is written in such a way that deacons, deacons-in-training, and interested church members will enjoy reading and studying the book.”

DescRiPtionFive hundred years ago, a monk named Martin Luther wrote ninety-fi ve theses, hoping to start a discussion about sin and repentance at the university of Witten-berg in Germany. in a few months those questions had stirred the nation; a few years later, the continent. Today we know that those theses changed the course of both the Western church and world history. in this volume for children, Simonetta Carr tells the compelling story of this father of the Protestant Reformation, tracing his quest for peace with God, his lifelong heroic stand for God’s truth, and his family life and numerous accomplishments. The Reformer’s greatest accomplishment, she writes, “has been his uncompromising emphasis on the free promise of the gospel.”

family guidance seriesJoel R. Beeke, edited by Jay T. Collier

Family Worship, 2nd editionin this installment of the Family Guidance series, Joel R. Beeke presents a heartfelt plea for the renewal of family wor-ship in Christian homes. The family is modeled after the very being of God, providing a divine foundation for family worship from creation. This is not a mere idealistic suggestion for the godly family, but is presented in Scripture as a solemn duty. With great pastoral care, the author gives valuable insights into implementing family worship, answers common objections raised against it, and motivates the reader to follow through with it faithfully.Paperback, 80 pages, 978-1-60178-058-4, $6.00

The Family at Church: Listening to Sermons and Attending Prayer MeetingsThis book contains practical guidance on two important areas of family life. First, it explains how we should prepare our families for public worship, how we should receive the preached word, and how we should put that word into practice. Second, it addresses the subject of prayer meetings, showing the scriptural and historical warrant for them, explaining their purposes, and detailing how to implement them.Paperback, 80 pages, 978-1-60178-043-0, $6.00

Bringing the Gospel to Covenant ChildrenThis book is packed with practical guidance on how to evangelize covenant children and how, by God’s grace, to make the home “a nursery for heaven.” After showing how some Christians today fail to understand the role of the covenant in their children’s lives, Joel R. Beeke off ers insight on the covenant relationship between God and man, and its implications for home and family. He then teaches parents how to instruct their children in the gospel, with detailed guidelines on how to use prayer, family worship, teaching, conversation, and mentoring to evangelize chil-dren. Leading a child to Christ is a lengthy but hopeful journey in which parents must use God’s appointed means while depending radically upon the Holy Spirit to produce the desired result. Paperback, 96 pages, 978-1-60178-117-8, $6.00
