From The Executive Director Written by Lynn Tanner, CMCA, AMS

Radisson has several r e t e n t i o n p o n d s

located throughout the community. Retention ponds, known legally as stormwater retention facilities, are bodies of water in residential and commercial developments (man-made or natural) that collect and store stormwater runoff. They are owned by the Radisson Community Association (RCA) and are considered Radisson Common Property.

Many of our retention ponds are located adjacent to the walking trails, providing an attractive amenity to the community. However, the appearance of a retention pond can and does change dependent on weather conditions and other factors. On Page 3 is an educational pamphlet which the Association developed to help educate residents on the functions of the ponds and ways you can help the ponds look their best.

This year, the RCA Board of Directors has continued its proactive efforts in maintaining the community’s lakes and ponds. Some of these efforts have included: treating the ponds with dye; the restocking of Tripoid Grass Carp; and the removal of plant material from Hidden Lake. The Board also continues to work with a professional water quality expert who does onsite testing and makes recommendations to the previously mentioned maintenance actions. In addition to that, we are again working with Solitude Lake Management and

have applied with New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (NYS DEC) to use an aquatic herbicide in Lake Oberon to control floating vegetation, such as watermeal. Permits are required and when approved, will be applied by Solitude personnel.

As part of an ongoing improvement funded through the Capital Budget, aging walkway electrical time clock boxes are being replaced. These electrical boxes are very old, are quite unsightly, and the aging electrical infrastructure has caused several interruptions in service over the years. This upgrade has been completed over a four-year span. Nine have been completed so far and the last two are being replaced this year. The electric time clock boxes scheduled for replacement this year are located near the Carpenter Road Field and Potter Road/Darting Bird Lane.

Another improvement scheduled for this summer is the exterior painting of Aspen House. This work is tentatively planned for the week of August 5th, weather dependent. Additional projects, scheduled for late summer/early fall include: drainage work to be completed at the Radburn/Stevenage area tot-lot; and new basketball poles at the Carpenter Road basketball courts. These two locations will be unavailable to residents while this work is being completed.

Residents can be updated with scheduled closings of certain amenities, such as the above mentioned projects,

by selecting to receive notifications via our website on a variety of topics. This month, notices have been sent out regarding pool closings, summer rec events; Reflections; and road work information. If you have not yet signed up to receive these important updates, please do so by logging in and going to My Account > Settings. There, you can select the categories which you’d like to receive notifications from and in what manner (email, mobile, etc).

The Rec Committee has been working hard to make this year’s Founder’s Day a bit more special, in celebration of our 45th Anniversary. They increased the quantity of ice cream (the most popular item for kids!) and are including more activities of interest to teenagers. In addition, we will be offering sausage sandwiches (limited supply), as well as hotdogs at the event. We have invited the Sheriff’s Department Air-One and K-9 unit, and are

hopeful that they may be able to attend the event.

For those attending Founder’s Day please be advised that Deep Glade Drive will be closed to thru traffic, from Drakes Landing Road to Esprit Glade, during the event. Vehicles with handicapped parking stickers will be allowed to park on Deep Glade Drive, in front of Kerri Hornaday Park. Should inclement weather force the event to be moved to Sunday, August 11th, a notice will be sent out to the Association News group via our notification system, as previously mentioned, and will be posted on the community’s Facebook page.

I would like to thank this year’s sponsors for helping us continue to provide this great event. Please see the complete list of current sponsors on page 5. Also, stop by to see the Event and Community Level Sponsors at their booths and thank them in person for their support.

Representatives of CenterState CEO present the RCA Executive Director and members of the Board with a Proclamation

congratulating the Radisson Community on its 45th Anniversary.

Reflections, July 26, 2019 Page 3

Radisson has several retention ponds located throughout the community.

Their main purpose is a functional one. Retention ponds, known legally as storm-

water retention facilities, are bodies of water in residential and commercial developments (man-made or natural) that collect and store stormwater run-

off. These ponds control water quantity and mitigate flooding. They also help to reduce pollution and control water

quality. They are owned by the Radisson Community Association (RCA) and are

considered Radisson Common Property.

Many of our retention ponds are located adjacent to the walking trails, providing an attractive amenity to the community. However, the appearance of a retention pond can and does change dependent

on weather conditions and other factors. While many contributing factors are out of our control, the RCA takes proactive measures, when practicable, to main-tain the appearance of the ponds. For

instance, we add dye to darken the water and inhibit plant growth. We stock our

ponds with grass eating carp and manu-ally remove plant material when appli-

cable. We also work with an engineer and a professional water quality expert who

do onsite testing and make recommenda-tions for treatment changes, if needed.

Is there something I can do to help the ponds look better?

YES!! Residents’ cooperation is essential to help us keep our ponds functional and

looking the best they can.

Most of the issues that plague the appearance of a retention pond are

caused by nutrient overload. Excessive nutrients create unsightly algae and bac-

teria growth, as well as increase plant material.

You can help by adhering to the following tips!

A few simple steps:

• Do not feed the waterfowl. Their waste adds to the nutrient overload in the pond and they can spread dis ease and algae from pond to pond. • Dispose of yard waste properly. DO NOT place yard waste (grass clip pings, leaves, etc) into the ponds. This increases nutrient level, which promotes algae and plant growth. • Keep yard waste out of stormwater drains. Decomposing leaves and vegetation allowed into storm drains create an excess of nutrients and bacteria that quickly overwhelm the stormwater ponds. • Dispose of pet waste properly. Waste left along the pathway system and common areas will run off into stormwater ponds.

• Reconsider the need to fertilize. NYS law (see below) prohibits using lawn fertilizer that contains phospho rus unless establishing a new lawn, or a soil test shows that your lawn does not have enough phosphorus. Fines may be incurred for violations. • Appreciate the benefit of buffers. Plants along the shoreline slow run off, absorb excess nutrients and reduce soil erosion.

Additional Resources

PLEASE...Do not treat the ponds directly in any way! It could interfere with ongoing treatments

and inadvertently harm the water and wildlife. Radisson Common property is to

be maintained by RCA personnel only.

Please see below the RCA Stormwater Educational Pamphlet for helpful tips and resources for residents. This document can also be found on our website, on the Facilities, Parks & Common Property page. For additional guidelines on the stormwater

facilities, you can also view our Stormwater Retention Facility Policy. While fishing is allowed at all of our retention ponds, we adhere to a strict Catch and Release policy. We also ask that you

please respect residents’ private property and be sure to fish from Common Property along the shoreline.

Beverages provided by Corporate Park member Anheuser-Busch/InBev

Despite the threat of rain throughout the day, we were fortunate to

have dry weather for Family Movie night on Tuesday, July 16th. Everyone enjoyed watching the feature movie Incredibles 2, while snacking on pop-

corn, candy and beverages. Special thanks to Autumn Starr for sponsoring this won-derful family event!

Family Movie Night

On Sunday, July 21st we hosted our 2nd annual Patio Party at WT Brews. This event was sold out with 70 residents in atten-

dance. Everyone enjoyed craft beer flights, wine, and hard cider. It was difficult to choose from the vari-ous offerings on the menu board! We also enjoyed a delicious catered dinner

with sweet & sour meatballs, Italian sau-sage bites, chicken tenders, roasted sum-mer vegetables, pasta salad, tomato & cucumber salad and cupcakes for dessert!

WT Brews was a wonderful venue for this event, with seating inside and out, and a great view of the Seneca River.
