Notes ON THE PROGRAMby Jennifer Lapple and Kim André Arnesen

Armenian Dances, (Part I) (12 minutes)Alfred Reed (1921–2005)arr. Masato Sato

Armenian Dances (1972) is based onauthentic Armenian folk songs from thecollected works of Gomidas Vartabed, the founder of Armenian classicalmusic. Part I is an extended symphonicrhapsody built upon five differentArmenian folk songs, freely treated and

developed in terms of the modern con-cert band or wind ensemble.

“The Apricot Tree” consists of threeorganically connected songs. Its declam-atory beginning, rhythmic vitality, andornamentation make this song highly

L’isle joyeuse (6 minutes)Claude Debussy (1862–1918)arr. Toshio Mashima

French composer Claude Debussy wasassociated with Impressionist music andhis use of non-traditional scales andchromaticism influenced many com-posers who followed. Debussy’s prolificwriting for piano included L’isle joyeuse(the isle of joy, 1903), which was in thelarger scale, needing virtuosity to per-form. It was composed in 1904, between"Estampes" (1903) and "Images"(1905–07). While Debussy's style isoften more subdued, this piece is joyousand colorful with a grandiose climax.

Debussy was inspired by "The Embarka-tion for Cythera" of Watteau, FrenchRococo painter of the 18th century, andso titled the piece. The island ofCythera had a shrine of Aphrodite(Venus) that lovers eagerly visited inancient days. In fact, Watteau's pictureis considered to depict the debarkationfrom Cythera, because the lovers are onthe island, ready to leave. The vividimagery of undulating waves is aprominent musical theme throughoutthe composition.

Finale from Symphony No. 4 in F minor, Op. 36 (9 minutes)Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–93)

Russian composer of the late-Romanticperiod, Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky com-posed Symphony No. 4 in F minor in1878, and it is often referred to as“Fate.” The symphony’s opening fan-fare is a metaphor for “Fate” or “thefatal power which prevents one fromattaining the goal of happiness” as thecomposer explained it. He went on:“No haven exist… Drift upon that seauntil it engulfs and submerges you inits depths.”

In the Finale, Tchaikovsky incorporatesa famous Russian folk-song, “In theField Stood a Birch Tree,” as one of itsthemes. This explosive finale, a sym-phonic band favorite, is similar to thefirst movement with its burst of energyand a blaze of sound. Marked Allegrocon fuoco (with fire), the music races bylike a raging inferno. The Fate motifabruptly returns and the symphony con-cludes with a wild frenzy of sound, accented with numerous cymbal crashes.

Lux Aurumque (15 minutes)Eric Whitacre (b. 1970)

Eric Whitacre is one of the most popu-lar and performed composers of ourgeneration. An accomplished composer, conductor, and lecturer, many ofWhitacre’s works have entered the stan-dard choral and symphonic repertoires. His works Water Night, Cloudburst,Sleep, and Lux Aurumque are amonghis most popular contemporary choralworks, and Godzilla East Las Vegas, and Ghost Train among his most popu-lar instrumental works. Lux Aurumque

(2000), originally a choral work, is basedon the following poem by Edward Esch:

“Light, warm and heavy as pure gold and angels sing softly to the new-bornbabe.”

Whitacre wanted a simple approach toreflect these words in sound, and hiswords, “I waited patiently for the tightharmonies to shimmer and glow.”

Missa In Angustiis (Nelson Mass) (42 minutes)Franz Joseph Haydn (1732–1809)

The so-called “Lord Nelson Mass” wascomposed in the summer of 1798, a badyear for the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with large parts of it under French rule.It is probably this grim situation thatmade Haydn title the mass Missa inAngustiis (Mass in Time of Anxiety).

The grim circumstances are immediatelyreflected in the anguished Kyrie, whichcomposers seldom set in the minormode. The Gloria is a celebratory dia-logue between soloists and chorus. Yet,

even in this sprightly Allegro, Haydnintroduces the minor far more than iscustomary. The tempo slows and themood sobers for the plea, “Qui tollispiccata mundi, miserere nobis” (Thouthat takes away the sins of the world, have mercy upon us). The conclusionrepeats the music of the opening, creat-ing a large symphonic structure, a hymnof praise, surrounding a supplication.

The opening of the Credo is famous forits canon between the sopranos and

expressive. “The Partridge’s Song” is anoriginal song by Vartabed, which wasoriginally arranged for solo voice andchildren’s choir. It has a simple, delicatemelody that depicts the tiny steps of thepartridge. “Hoy, Nazan Eem” is alively, lyric love song that depicts ayoung man singing the praises of hisbeloved Nazan. The song has dancerhythms and ornamentation that makeit an impressive, catchy tune. “Alagyaz”(the name of a mountain in Armenia) isa beloved Armenian folk song, and itslong-breathed melody is as majestic asthe mountain itself. “Go, Go” is a

humorous, light-textured tune. In per-formance, Vartabed coupled it with acontrasting slower song, “The Jug.” Itsrepeated note pattern musically depictsthe expression of laughter, and is inrecitative style.

This work is a true testament to thegifted composer, Alfred Reed, who wasone of North America’s most prolificand frequently performed composers. With more than two hundred publishedworks for concert band, wind ensem-ble, orchestra, chorus, and chamberensemble to his name.

tenors, followed closely by the altosand basses. Since the Renaissance, set-tings of the Credo have traditionallymade a musical distinction between thestatement of belief and the narration ofthe key events in the life of Jesus toreflect the mystery of the incarnation, the tragedy of the crucifixion, and thejoy of the resurrection. Haydn pays spe-cial attention to Christ’s birth and pas-sion, expanding them into a tender dia-logue between soloists and chorus.

The Sanctus begins with unusual solem-nity, leading into a brighter Allegro onthe words “Pleni Sunt coeli et terra gloria

tua” (Heaven and earth and full of thyglory). The Benedictus, usually a warm, meditative piece distinguished musicallyfrom the jubilant singing of the twoHosannas, here returns to the somber Dminor of the Kyrie. Haydn makes thisshort text into an extended dramatic dia-logue between chorus and soloists, shift-ing to the major only for the sopranosolo. The Agnus Dei, like the Kyrie, is atripartite invocation. Haydn sets the firsttwo statements for the ensemble ofsoloists. When the chorus returns for theconcluding plea for peace, the tempoincreases to Allegro to lift the Mass outof the gloom into a triumphant D major.

Requiem (NYC Premiere), (50 minutes)Kim André Arnesen (b. 1980)

My first experience with a Requiemwas as a boy soprano at the age of 12singing Mozart’s Requiem. It was myfavorite work in the choir and I remem-ber sitting at the piano many times atmy home, playing the whole workmyself. Later I discovered the Requiemsby Fauré, Duruflé, Lloyd-Webber,Schnittke, and many others and hadsome great experiences with them. Infact I started to buy recordings of everyRequiem I could find.

With my fascination of Requiems Ihave wanted to write one myself formany years, and when commissioned towrite a big work for the boys choir Ihad performed Mozart’s Requiem withas a child, I was certain that I wanted towrite a Requiem dedicated to them.Although I knew it was going to bechallenging, I had overcome the fear ofwriting a work with a text that so manyof the great composers had used beforeme. I felt ready to make a Requiem that

could be different and in my ownidioms and reflections.

To make room for a couple of newtexts, I didn’t use the complete text ofthe Requiem Mass. I wanted a text thatcould be inspiring for people who can’tfind a meaning to their life. I foundEmily Dickinson’s Not in Vain anddecided to make it a part of myRequiem. It’s a text that tells us that inhelping others, we can give our lifemeaning. We too often measure successin recognition, achievements, social sta-tus, etc., and I think this poem is show-ing us instead how to feel successful bywhat we do for others.

My Requiem is not dedicated to thememory of any particular person orgroup. I wanted to write a Requiem thatcould provide some solace to people whoare in pain and grieving, or to assist in amoment of remembrance and honoringthe loved ones who we are missing.

Requiem aeternam, dona eis, Domine:et lux perpetua luceat eis,Te decet hymnus Deus in Sion, et tibi redetur votum in Jerusalem:

exude oration meam, ad te omnis caro veniet.

Rest eternal grant to them, O Lordand let perpetual light shine upon them.A hymn befits thee, O God in Zion, and to thee a vow shall be fulfilled inJerusalem.

1. Requiem aeternam

Text of Requiemby Kim André Arnesen

Dies irae, dies illa,Solvet saeclum in favilla:Teste David cum Sibylla.Quantus tremor est futurus,Quando judex est venturus.

Liber scriptus proferetur,In quo fofum contineturJudex ergo cum sedebit, Quid-quid latet apparebit.

Tuba mirum spargens sonum,

per sepulchra regionum, coget omnes ante thronum.Mors stupebit et natura,Cum resurgef creatura,Judicanti responsura.

Quid sum miser tunc dicturus?Quem patronum rogaturus?

Day of wrath, that day, shall dissolve the world into embers, as David prophesied with the Sybil. How great the trembling will be,when the Judge shall come.

A written book will come forth, inwhich all will be contained

When therefore the judge is seated, whatever lies concealed will be revealed.

The trumpet spreading its wondroussound

through the tombs of every land, will summon all before the throne. Death and nature will be astounded, when all creation rises again,to answer the judgement.

What am I a poor wretch to say? What protector shall I ask for?

2. Dies Irae

Kyrie eleison.Christe eleison.Kyrie eleison.

Lord have mercy.Christ have mercy.Lord have mercy.

3. Not In Vain

If I can stop one heart from breaking I shall not live in vain:If I can ease one life the aching, Or cool one pain,Or help one fainting robinUnto his nest again,I shall not live in vain. — Emily Dickinson

O how fearful that day,on which the guilty shall risefrom the embers to be judgedSpare them then, O God.

Rex tremendae majestatisQui salvandos salvas gratis, salva me, fons pietatis.Recordare, Jesu pie,Quod sum causa tue viae:Ne me perdas illa die.

Quaerens me, sedisti, lassus,Redemisti cruces passus;

Tantus labor non sit cassus.Juste Judex ultionis,Donum fac remissionis. Ante diem rationis.

Ingemisco, tamquam reus,Culpa rubet vultus meus;Supplicanti parce, Deus,Qui Mariam absolvisti,Et latronem exaudisti,Mihi quoque spem dedisti.

Preces meae non sunt dignae, Sed tu, bonus, fac benigne,Ne perenni cremer igne.Inter oves Iocum praesta,

Et ab haedis me sequestra,Statuens in parte dextra.

King of tremendous majesty,Who freely saves the saved, save me, fount of pity. Remember, merciful Jesus,That I am the cause of your sojourn:Do not cast me out on that day.Protect me in my final hour.

Seeking me, you sat down weary, having suffered the cross, youredeemed me,

May such great labor not be in vain. Just judge of remission, grant the gift of remission, before the day of reckoning.

I groan, like one who is guilty,my face blushes with guilt. Spare thy supplicant, O God.You who absolved Mary Magdalene, have also given hope to me.

My prayers are not worthy, but Thou, good one, kindly grantthat I not burn in the everlasting fires,Grant me a favored place among thysheep,

and separate me from the goats, placing me at thy right hand.

When the cursed are confounded, consigned to the fierce flames, call me to be with the blessed.I pray, suppliant and kneeling,My heart contrite as if it were ashes, protect me in the final hour.
